    Hi Californians!

I have some questions regarding the black legacy plates that I'm looking to get for my newly purchased truck.

-Is it really an additional $40 annual fee to have these type of plates?! Annual car registration in CA is already so expensive.
-My truck being new, doesn't have plates yet, how do I go about getting these legacy plates outright? I was on the CA DMV website but I can't seem to figure out if I have to wait for the standard plates to arrive first then swap them out for the legacy variety.

    Thanks!

I have them on all of our vehicles and can confirm that there is an additional $40 annual fee even if they are NOT personalized plates.

Try going to a AAA office. If you have traditional plates you can turn in and ask for the legacy and also have random numbers.

I can’t remember how much but my 2015 is over $600/yr.

WOW. $40 every year on top of an already high car registration cost..... might have to stick with the standard ones for now. LOL.

You have to wait for the ones the DMV sends you to come first. But as others have stated; it's the same price for them to be personalized, or random - so go personalized.

Right on! Thanks for confirming, I initially thought I could order them directly from the DMV without having to be sent the standard ones.

Yah, I was hoping so too. I had legacy plates on my FJ Cruiser that I traded in and was hoping I could just swap them over - but it doesn't work that way. Going to AAA to do the swap in the way to go though. In and out in 15 minutes for $15.

You can order thru the DMV website. If you receive plates for your truck don’t even put them on. Wait for notification from the dmv that your plates are on and go swap them.
