Brought in my 18 CM for 30k service. Last weekend I changed my cabin filter and air filter.
Writer says after checking car, in for 30k service. I asked how much he says about $170. He says replacing filters is part of it. I told him not to change them because I already did. He he can’t write it as a 30k service then, and just writes it as regular oil change.
I got a good deal on the filters so I don’t have to pay dealer prices.

Maybe next time bring in your own filter so they actually do the service but with your supplies part. I’ve done that before with a different vehicle and wanted to use a Napa Gold oil filter and the dealership did the service and just wrote, “customer supplied filter.” Worth a shot.

I don't pay for the "xx"K services. Most of them are oil changes with a visual inspection or an air filter change that they ream you for. Pay for the oil change and do the rest yourself. Mark it down in a journal and throw it in the glove box for your own records/warranty purposes.

that’s what I’m thinking. Once it warms up here, I will do the checks myself. I keep all service and things done in a folder at home.
I did that with my Taco and the buyer was happy to see that.

You can also setup a Toyota owner's account for your vehicle. Everytime you do an oil change you can manually enter it and it becomes record. Makes things easy if you have a warranty challenge.

So you did part of the 30K service and so he only did and recorded what you needed...what's the problem? There's nothing magical about writing down 30K service which consists of an oil change, oil filter change , air filter and cabin filter change vs you keeping a log of the air filter and cabin filter change and the dealership recording the oil and oil filter change. It doesn't matter who does it as long as it's done correctly and adequately documented.

I have the lifetime drop in TRD air filter and lifetime K&N cabin filter. I always tell them to leave those alone and have never had an issue. Actually I'm at the dealer getting my suspension installed on my 20 also the 5k service and told them the same thing.

But did they want to change you for service them even if you didn’t want them?
I was told I was going to be charged for them even if they didn’t touch them, became it’s part of the “service “.

Is that what you were told IF you insisted on the "30K mile maintenance" being performed? It's a menu...the 30K mile maintenance includes air/cabin filters and if you did them already it's no longer the 30K mile maintenance....it's an oil and oil filter change...which is what you needed and I assume you paid for at this visit.

From a practical POV as long as all of the maintenance items that normally goes into the 30K mile maintenance was performed either by you (air filter and cabin filter) or the dealership (oil and oil filter) you are good to go.....

Well on my 17 I paid for the extended Toyota Care to 45k miles so never "paid" for service. Today is my first service on my 20 only because I'm having them install my 6112 and do alignment. The 5k service is only tire rotation, fluid, and filter check.

I've never been a DIY car guy, but after my 2-3y free service is up, I think I can handle the Cabin and Engine Air Filter replacements myself.

Even I should be able to do those :help:

Don’t forget the transmission service check. This consists of checking solenoid valves, levels, etc. The dealership did this for free for me. It was pretty quick as well. I didn’t care if they did anything, but wanted the paperwork that the transmission was serviced. If there was something that was going to blow on my truck, it was probably going to be the transmission (I was wrong).

The air filter and cabin filter is how dealers make their money. Just look at the ridiculous prices they charge for a 5 minute job. I feel for the people they take advantage of. When I was getting the free oil changes on my Tacomas and my Tundra I told them up front not to bother with the filters. I also had to tell them to look at the door stickers for the PSI which I should not have had to do. DIY is the only way to protect yourself from the dealerships either trying to rip you off or just crappy service.

So just the oil change was around $75. So that means I would have paid another $75 for them changing the air filter and cabin filter. The waiting room was full, don't want to stereotype but mostly women and older couples. Some don't have a choice or just don't know any better. If they go to an auto parts store, I'm sure they can get the air filter installed for free.
They were packed today, the service writer told me when I got my keys that it was their busiest day of the year so far. I wonder how good of job they do when they have to turn and burn cars.

Just because people are waiting in the waiting area doesn't mean they're all getting the same service and getting ripped off for the filters...
