Which years came with the 38 gal tank and was it an option or did all models come with the 38?

It's an option. I think it started in 2014, but I'm not sure.

Comes in the SR5 upgrade package. Not sure if it is standard in higher trims.

Introduced in 2016. Standard on limited, platinum and 1794. That's my recollection at least.

Also note that in some regions (e.g. Canada), there's no such thing as an SR5 Upgrade package as the standard SR5 includes all the upgrade features (such as the larger fuel tank). So that can make comparing different used trucks difficult unless the seller knows exactly what they have (and aren't lying to you).

Hi! Hey I think this is a relevant question to the OP. The 38 gal tank reads EMPTY when it still has 8-10 gallons left. There is a lot of mixed answers out there about whether it's ok to drive into the reserve, because people say the fuel pump is primed by the reserve gallons. How many 38 gal owners drive into the reserve? Is it a problem for fuel pump? Thanks!

I've never been able to put more than 32 gals, and that was with light on for a few days and distance to empty at 0.

No problem driving into the reserve. Mine has 9 gallons left when the distance to empty says "0". And this is after 500 miles of driving. There is at least one member here who has put in 38 gallons at fill up. I wouldn't worry about the fuel pump, it is widely understood that this is an old wives tale.

It's fine. The fuel pump on most modern cars is cooled and lubricated internally. The reserve is so large to account for towing. If you're towing max capacity that 8 gallons won't get you very far at all.
