Oil and filter change, what tools will I need?

I am new to the forum.
I purchased the truck new, 5.7 SR5 4X4. The dealer has always changed the oil in the past. This will be my first time.

all you need to know....

 

10mm and 12mm socket and ratchet(s) to drop the factory steel skid plate.

14mm socket or wrench (I believe that's correct. I have a Fumoto on mine now so I don't pull a drain plug) for the oil drain plug.

A 3/8" ratchet short extension to insert into the oil filter canister lid drain plug----to spin it off.

Probably the silly oil filter canister cap/lid Specialty Tool to pull this oil filter cap/lid off.

Oil drain pan.

Shop rags or paper towels.

A can of brake clean is always good to have around.

Smart money would have the specialty tool on hand that screws into the oil filter canister cap/lid to drain it off of its oil-----before you pull the canister lid off. Someone will be along to show you a link to that tool (I don't use one as I have Jowett Performance oil filter canister lid with built in Fumoto valve).

 

One important thing is QUALITY filter and oil. Not to open posts of the past, but a nice WIX filter or OEM Toyota with a synthetic oil of proper weight. Walmart is a good place to find decent prices on oil.
Also, a nice LARGE drain pan with cap and handle, so you can just cap it, clean it, and take it to your local oil recycling facility.

and it has done me well for the past few years. Big enough to catch any other drips during a change AND it stands on one end for storage.

 

If you're planning on doing this yourself from now on, look into the Fumoto valve, oil filter wrench and drain tool. Makes oil changes so much cleaner, easier and more pleasant to do.

Plenty of time.So many things to remove to do a simple oil change.

I’d also recommend checking the website of whatever oil mfr you choose. I know Pennzoil often times has $10 rebates, so if a 5 qt jug at Walmart is $21, ends up being $11 after rebate. Not a bad price at all.

 

Thanks for the rebate info. Pannzoil has two now, $22.00 Shell gift card good until Feb 23, & $10.00 good for the rest of this year. I will need more than one jug.

 

With the Pennzoil though, just make sure your local retailer is listed on there.
Oreilly is also have a PZ and Wix filter rebate. 5 quart jug of Platinum with Wix filter for $33 with $10 rebate.

 

go ahead and buy you a FUMOTO valve.... its worth it in long run

Do yourself a favor! If you have a plastic filter cap get a metal one off Amazon or eBay and switch it out at your first change (the plastic ones are insanely hard too get off because they get way too tight). I actually got the Toyota brand metal cap for around $21.00 off of Amazon. The biggest problem is plastic mating up to a metal base.
