What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Quite a few of us have replaced them with LED's. It's a huge difference and very worth it.

only managed to capture two out of four tundras I saw that were at least a little modified and the two were parked.

The silver truck pulled up right next to me at school. haha.

Lots of us have. Its all easy except for the cig lighter. That one required about 5 different tries over a years time to get it. Had to fab my own bulb.

 

That damn cig lighter pisses me off. I’m just going to order a new bulb, and a mr2 gear bulb and put the white condom from the mr2 bulb on the cig bulb.

 

Not much stumps me, but this one sure did. I could see lots of stuff was tied in here in that area. From readings, lots of potential problems if wires got pulled or jarred. I ended up twisting off the bulb socket without removing the cig cylinder. Made my own bulb from a T-5 by shaving off the side meat and bending up the prongs latched onto the salvaged OEM prongs.

Slid bulb back into the OEM bracket which firmed the assy up. Plugged it in and she worked. I had to use what I had on hand. Wished I had a 360° type LED which would be better, as I had to back the pictured bulb head off the lens assy when inserted which allowed more light.

 

I have the same setup. But the 360 bulbs are too tall

 

I've wondered if one can simply order bulb condoms (like the stock green ones) that fit bulbs, like the permanent halogen in the cigarette lighter. I'd tried Sharpie but that didn't work. Would love for it to match my red LED climate controls and clusters.

 

I’d buy a red LED in your case. My bulb was a little long, but I made it work by standing the assy off from the lens by 3/16” and securing with some Gorilla Tape.

 

I think I could do that. What bulb is it? I usually get mine from SuperBrightLEDs.com. Also you might just be a genius.

You guys, I think I screwed up. My truck came with 20" wheels when I bought it, ended up buying new tires last summer cause it needed them and now that I STILL hate the wheels I wanna buy new wheels but that means I"m stuck with 20" wheels...are there any decent looking bronze ones out there? I'd ideally like to get another 1" negative offset to push them out just a pinch more. If money wasn't an option, I'd just go buy an 18" wheel/tire set and be done.

 

im sure theres decent looking 20s out there. but to me the first gens just always look off with 20s. just the body design.

Yeah, that's what I think too. They look way better with 17s or 18s but now I'm afraid those would look too tiny since I've been used to the 20s. I was set on Method Roost back when they still had 20" for sale but they are the same 20x9 0offset at these moto metal wheels I have now

 

Rattle can them Bronze. Duplicolor is your go to product. Its an Acrylic Lacquer Enamel. Finish the topcoat with either gloss or matte finish clear coat. I just did my Patrick Starfish wheels in the ‘Silver’ with Gloss Clear Coat. They look brand new for $21 in paint for two silver cans and one clear coat can.

 

That bulb is a Partsham T-5 ordered from online.

This was my 5th attempt at the cig bulb. Once I cracked the code (without a full removal) of being able to remove the bulb, my strategy was to just remove the green rubber. After removing the green, I went to insert the bulb back into the socket and it slipped and thus blew the bulb out from shock.

Moved to plan B and then C then D with the Partsham bulbs which were on hand from other prior work. Gorilla Tape saved the day!

 

You could sell the tires as well, or sell the wheels/tires as a pkg. Would cover more of the costs.
… or - try to do a barter, always someone who wants to trade for a larger wheel. just depends what they 'got.

 

I ran the calculations for the helmholtz resonator and I'm curious how particular they are to being the exact right length? At 2,200 rpm's mine should 27 inches long and at 1,800 rpm it should be 33 inches. Mine definitely resonates in the 1,800 to 2,200 range so if I spit the difference and make it 30 inches will that be good enough?

I did the calculations with 400 for the speed of sound because most folks said to because the exhaust is hot.

 

Have you checked used? I got a nice set of 4runner rims for $250 and an almost brand new set of goodyear wrangler duratracs for $250, so $500 for a great set of wheels and tires. You can find new takeoffs a lot with stock tires also. As far as size, just get taller tires and it will be the same circumference. I was picky on the specific rims I wanted otherwise I could have easily gotten a set for $100.

If you're looking for more offset, SCS has a -28mm offset wheel (expensive though). customwheeloffset.com has a lot of negative offset wheels. Have you considered spacers? I know they get a bad rap sometimes, but I've had mine for 6 months and no issues. I see them used from time to time here in in Denver. Just stick with Spidertrax or Borla.

 

Should there be red ATF in any of the radiator lines? I'm replacing it and that came out of two of the smaller lines at the bottom, I think they were to the transmission cooler. It's probably fine but better safe than sorry.

ATF will never find its way into coolant.

Coolant will find its way into atf. The coolant is under much higher pressure than the atf

 

As Dan pointed out, that's normal. It's hard to tell how much fluid you lost but if it's a decent amount be sure to replace it.

 

I don't think those are technically radiator lines...they are the lines that carry the ATF fluid through the ATF cooler inside the radiator. The pics below are for a 4Runner, but it's the A340F transmission so it should be very similar if not the exact same.
