I just saw this post - I ride moto there all the time and used to be a volunteer patrol for the park rangers.

Here is a link to a map of the park, there is a PDF version you could download as well. They give you a free map when you enter the park, it's the same one I think, color and folds out to a pretty good size. Day use is $5.00 a vehicle. They have awnings, benches, fire pits and several bathrooms spread through out the park.

    https://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1200

Phone number for park info: 661-248-7007

I rode there about 3 weeks ago and all of the higher elevation moto (single track) trails were closed but Gold Hill Road up to the Alamo Loop should be open now. There is a stream crossing at the base of Alamo, it's concrete and no problem unless it's really deep which in that case the rangers close the gate anyway. A pretty good chance you'll still find a little snow in the shaded areas at the top of Alamo.

The Alamo Loop is great route, it's all fire road, not too tough and has great views over the Lockwood Valley areas. If it's not too muddy a 2WD shouldn't have any problems. If you want a really challenging trail you can always access Miller's Jeep Trail from the top of Alamo. Not a lot of places to turn around on Miller's so you'd be pretty committed once you start down...really fun trail on a bike but I wouldn't do it in my truck.

The Power Line is also fire road with some elevation change, Condor Mesa has a nice view over Lebec and Quail Lake.

They also have a fenced off 4WD area with boulders, pipes, mud pit (when it rains enough), a hill with some boulders cemented in place and miscellaneous obstacles to play around on. Even if you don't try anything it's fun to watch other people.

There are tons of videos on youtube as well.

Thanks for the info! I remember the powerline trail. Pretty fun and great views. That place is just a maze of trails. I forgot how much fun I had there even by myself. You coming? I’m sure your experience would be valuable!

Anyone own radios for communication while we’re fartin around? They come in handy when trails split or while waiting for groups to catch up.

I hope you don’t mind my :spy:, but it’s about a dirt play date, so I can’t help it.

Anyway, I just want to make sure anyone about to purchase knows that, while we call ‘em “walkie-talkies”, everyone uses the multi-channel hand-held Ham radios*. If you buy actual walkie-talkies, you’ll be limited to the one or two per-programmed channels.

Y’all probably know this already, but I want to make sure no one tosses money away on something that at won’t work for everyone on this run....

Edit: and by ‘everyone’, of course I mean other people, that have obtained Ham and MURS licenses.

I didn't know any of that was required, had to do a little reading. Radios have always been on my list but I never picked one up. The licensing requirement seems almost impossible to enforce. Would CBs be a better option for activities like these?

um. I was politely encouraging you to avoid walkie-talkies. I haven’t any personal info on the hand-held hams :anonymous:, except I hear they’re pretty handy.

And maybe utilized on every single SoCal Shenanigans run. Ever.

What you have to have a license for CB or radio?

From the reading I did a cb doesn't require a license while a Ham radio does.

CB hasn't required a license since the early 1980's. It wasn't much as I recall. Just a few questions & mail in application. When the CB radio craze exploded after the song "Convoy", the FCC gave up on licensing.

Well fk. Looks like I won't be finished in time. The vanity I ordered will be delivered that Saturday. That and some unexpected plumbing issues have delayed my progress. I can't take off to go wheeling until it's complete per the bosses orders. For now I'll focus on running Lockwood/Miller Jeep trail in March. Have fun, be safe, take lots o pics, and keep the shiny side up.
