Aftermarket Alarm Death

So my 2-way Prestige is dead... It will only intermittently receive commands from the fobs and will no longer work the door locks. Looking at getting a Compustar 2-way OR just grabbing some factory fobs and going back to the factory keyless and deal with remote start another way. Either way will cost me some $$, but the cheapest way would be to grab some factory fobs. The factory keyless module is still in the truck. The Prestige uses the module to activate the door locks.

I'm leaning towards the Compustar because 2-way and remote start, but I'm pretty weary of aftermarket alarms in general. I haven't had much luck with them in the long term. The maximum life I've gotten out of one is about 4 years until the brain goes senile and starts dropping functions and doing strange things. This one is about 4 years old. It was awesome when it worked, but all the awesomeness has been overshadowed by its failure.

I have always used viper. Never had a problem I couldnt google my way out of. usually caused by me playing with the remote.

 

I've had a couple of DEI systems, one being a Viper. That lasted about 3 years and was in the bin. How long have yours been going?

 

9 years on my wrangler, 12 years on my cherokee, 3.5 years on my tundra. What do you do to them? LOL
Only problems I ever had were from me pushing wrong buttons and had 2 remotes just die. All were installed by a reputable shop (sounds of tristate) not me.

 

After looking around it looks like alot of people prefer compustar. Might have to give them a try with my next vehicle.

 

I use them normally like normal people use them. All of mine were installed at an authorized retail outlet. I brought them back and all they could say was that the brain modules go bad after a period of time and they have to be replaced. Warranty is 1 year and all of them have died well beyond that. I used to sell these damn things when my Viper went bad, so my DEI rep just sent a new brain module to me. Lasted another 3 years... Maybe it's just my luck. EVERY high performance vehicle I've owned has had catastrophic engine failure. Part of the reason I have a Tundra. The only thing that has lasted for me is factory keyless. My Subaru went 8 years on the factory keyless before a valve broke. I am starting to think factory keyless for the rest of my life.

 

Compustar is the way to go...
