Aftermarket head Unit

Pioneer and Kenwood seem to be the most popular. Can anyone share preference or advantages of one or the other? I know Pioneer has the Wireless CarPlay option but that isn't a big deal for me since my phone is plugged in for charging whenever I am in the car.

Also is a unit where you can adjust the angle of the face a must have?

 

If you want wireless CarPlay/Android auto, I'd suggest the Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX (or the AVH-W4500NEX). I went with the Alpine ILX F309. It's wired but the 9 inch screen is awesome and looks OEM installed. Also, Alpine sound is second to none.

 

The Alpine can adjust the face but you have to do it during install.

 

Do you retain all your steering wheel functions, rear camera, sensors, nav? Or do you have to specify you want these things when looking for a head unit?

 

They make a tundra version as well now Alpine ILX-309TND

 

You can keep all of those things and more including tire pressure through TPMS. You need to get idatalink maestro for the steering wheels controls, USB, camera, etc. I even hooked up the HDMI cable for mirroring my phone (YouTube, Netflix).

 

The tundra version comes with the maestro.

 

You have to buy the maestro module and accessories if they're not bundled. Additionally, the HU has to support it

 

I was able to save a few dollars building it out separately. However, you are right that model will come with everything you need. Here is a picture of it installled if that helps.

 

Can it tilt towards the driver at all? Or just up and down?

 

Are u doing a full system or just upgrading head unit? Reason I ask is the alpine halo isn’t that great. Picture quality sucks. Has a ton of features that you can add but everything requires a separate module for anything you want to add. If it’s just for the audio part then we all know alpine is top notch for audio. Another thing it has no CD player.

 

The one knock on the Pioneers for me, is the absence of a volume knob. It is a + or - button. Our 07 doesn't have steering wheel controls. Maybe I am getting old but hate that one feature.

 

Just replacing the HU, while I love music I just can see spending the $$ to upgrade speakers, amp, etc.

 

What would you suggest that has all those features and good picture quality?

 

Pioneer NEX series is awesome. Super user friendly, nice responsive touch screen, everything you need, in my opinion...

 

I put a Pioneer 1440NEX in my recently acquired '09 DC 2nd Gen. Best feature set for the price.
Don't need Android, and didn't change the stock speakers... and the audio is SIGNIFICANTLY better!
I'm not going to put $1000 audio into a 10-yr old truck.

 

I have the pioneer 4201NEx wich is the 4200NEX but with an added camera in the box. I think for the price the picture is good when watching movies. I’m not complaining at all. Theirs probably better but this suits my needs and I’m able to view what I’m watching in the front to the rear flip down tv. It also has an hdmi port so I mirror my phone to the pioneer with the adaptor to hdmi of course.

 

I can only tilt up and down.

 

I have always been a Pioneer guy. I find them hard to beat purely from a features for the money standpoint.

do any of these HU's still give you control to edit the Lock settings, Auto Headlight sensitivity, DRL on/off? or do you lose that with any aftermarket HU?

 

Haven't seen any that can. But you can do all that with Techstream anyway.

 

On my dasaita there is a app to adjust all the settings that you could normally adjust on the stock entune.

At least in my case, 2017 sequoia limite, i was able to use Techstream and turn the DRL off, turn the seatbelt nagging volume down, turn the key reminder chime volume down also. Im sure there are other options in there but i didn't take the time to go through every single one. Just the annoying ones. I think you can also adjust the lightout (dome) time delay after lock.
Also, you can turn on and off the lock/unlock *beep* from there too. Some members with the Dasaita radio had to go back in with Techstream to turn that *beep* ON because, for some reason, they mess something up or change something on the dasaita radio and it automatically turn the lock/unlock *beep* OFF..

I really wish they would update the maestro to work with the 2020 tundras. I'd really love to replace the shit jbl system

$280 Alpine ILX-W650 7" Double DIN Touchscreen Digital Multimedia Receiver with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Alpine ILX-W650. Going on one year and I love it. Pretty inexpensive too. I just can't change the background colors on the head unit. That's my only complaint so far.
