So far it sounds great. I have not taken it out on a long drive for testing yet. The speaker does come with an 8’ cord and I did need to extend that a few feet to reach under the driver seat.

    Here is the speaker:

It’s a great place to mount my tablet. Rago fab plate was not out when I bought the ICS. Would like to see Rago’s in person to compare.

BalUn = Balanced to Unbalanced, coaxial cable is unbalanced and the BalUn allows you to use twin lead cable. You might be able to find an impedance matching network to allow it but I don't think you'd gain anything but I say if Foghorn TX want's to try I say go for it I'm just thinking the antenna trimming would be tough and with the mismatch you might get some strange frequency response but if it's not in the 2 meter band what the heck just make sure you post your results for the rest of us. Ham radio is for experimenters.

Any elmer tips for an inspiring CWer!? FB KDOLAS

The problem is, is that, I have a degree in music performance (with an emphasis) in percussion. 10 wpm, 20 wpm, etc... the QSOs just all sound like drum beats to me.

The problem that I have is that it's nothing like listening to James Brown when in-the-pocket beat patterns occur... there's a different beat (or hum)... almost like an "Sri Lankan tabla drum cycle"... which makes it difficult to learn from my point of view.

It would be awesome to get my expert license, but I gotta learn this stuff = DE GNRL

TransNone, which antennae are you running? I'm about to buy that same hood mount and want to make sure 1-the antennae I buy will fight and 2-it's a good one for my radio reception. I can tell it's a Diamond from your picture. And looks like the mount is the K/400 3/8C.

    Thanks in advance mate.

I have these, and run the 770 most often, I might be moving it to my bed rack when it arrives.

The 3M vinyl will protect the paint, but it also defeats the grounding that the antenna needs. Running a braid from the hood to the body, and from the body to the frame, will also improve the transmit pattern and lower the noise floor. If you decide to run HF mobile, run braids from the front, rear, and center of the exhaust to the frame. This will eliminate most, if not all, of the interference from the engine.

While ground is always good, those two antennas don't require it and I have zero issues with noise. I did add an inline DC noise filter though.

Prepping for delivery... technically still HAM. Will be moving the antenna to the bed likely.

So..... Is it worth it to get your license and own one of these? And how much will it cost to get the license and a set up for the truck?

I have a CB.... It works for what I need and my kids can "play" on it too.... But I wouldnt mind having an alternative to it....

The license is only around $30 and takes a little studying to take the test. Capabilities are much great with a HAM radio vice CB. Nice radios aren't cheap but you can get started with inexpensive walkie talkie like radios that range further and can leverage local repeaters.

I recommend Hamstudy and the Gorden West books. It's pretty cheap for the license if not free, but depending in your proclivity for gadgets it can get pretty expensive lol.

I may be the newest technicians license in the group and I used the HAM test prep app on my phone and iPad to go section by section until I was scoring ninety percent or above in each section. Ended up missing two total on the test.

    http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session

Use the above link to enter search info for your area. See what dates on the horizon work for you and set one as a deadline and go from there.

My setup for the radio and accessories was about $600 and that setup came from here.

    https://www.gigaparts.com/icom-ic-2730a-dual-band-mobile-radio.html

Everyone in this thread is super helpful and experienced which is nice because you do not get caught up reading online arguments or opinions that just make your head hurt. Also it helps because everyone is a very similar truck as well for setup and they have proven the setups work also. It’s like having ten Yodas to teach you.

What's your call, do you have APRS setup? How you liking the Icom? One of the reasons I didn't get that brand was simply my association with Icom chatter and the Taliban lol.

I totally understand the association with ground df’ing “icoms” and where that mentality would stem from. But, if you really think about it, their radio of choice being utilized in the harshest terrain on the planet with repeater stations and the ability for them to communicate successfully day and night actually shows you how good the Icom brand is.

Now, understand, I have absolutely no other radio or brand to compare mine to, so I could have the worst radio ever made, but until one of you tells me that I will have no clue.

I have not started with APRS but will look into once I have a reputable source relocate from cannery row to skid row.

I wasn't sharpshooting iCom, it's good stuff. They're solid just like Codan. Also an Afghan thing haha. Get that APRS up! :)

I used the paid apps. I haven't tried their 'Lite' apps. I studied for a couple of weeks (ten years ago) on this app and passed Technician and General easily.

There are three different apps... one for each test Technician, General, Extra.

    iOS/iPhone:
    Technician: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ham-test-prep-technician/id297951496 ($5.99)
    General: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ham-test-prep-general/id298756574 ($5.99)
Extra: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ham-test-prep-extra/id298760002 ($5.99) (Keep in mind that the new Extra questions are changing on July 1st, 2020 and it might take a little while for this app to update to the latest questions/answers. See: https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/new-amateur-extra-question-pool-released.690055/)

I'm now starting to study for the Extra. Is it true that S**ff get's harder as you get older!?

    Android: (Not sure?)

    Totally worth the cost!

Also, once you get your license, this chart is your friend: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Regulatory/Band Chart/Band Chart - 11X17 Color.pdf
