Leaf spring upgrade

Hello,
Looking for some feed back and real life experiences with your upgraded rear pack. I will be picking up my 4wheel camper Topper next month and I need to get the new steed ready for it. The Topper weighs just under 500lbs and will pretty much live on the truck. When its loaded for adventure I could have another 200-500 in her.

I plan to throw on a set of 6112/5160's set at 1.9 up front with the 600 lbs spring. In the rear i'm leaning towards the U748 pack. With the Topper I think this will leave me with about .5 inch rake. Maybe a Ride-Right for the extra weight (had'em on my 1st gen and loved them)?

How is your Deaver pack holding up??? If your running something else to support your extra weight i'd love to hear about it.

I know this has been brought up before but i've been researching this for so long my eyes are crossed and the old noggin hurts.

Iv'e owned Toyota's since I was 16. The current fleet consists of a 17 DC, 2000 LC and a 97 LC. PNW LIFER!!!

They don’t hold up. Even the Deaver HD’s with extra leafs.

A few guys putting in 3” custom leafs to see if those will better hold the weight of our already trucks + gear.

 

Ok, there has to be something out there that is working to carry the extra weight. Dakar , OME, Iron man, Icon???

 

I’m sorry you haven’t had more replies. Maybe because we just spent 2 weeks discussing this, again, on another thread. I know you said you’ve been researching, so maybe you’re up to speed and posted this as a ‘hail Mary’.

All of these you listed work short term. And many on here use airbags when towing. If you want to know more about the 3” leaf spring option, that’s being developed by @papasmurf and @osidepunker, currently with Deaver as the leaf-builder.

 

I went with a plus 2.5" Old Man Emu set. Much better ride and no more body roll on corners. The Fox 2.5 upgrade didn't hurt matters either...

I haven't towed anything heavy or had a bed load over 300#'s yet though.

 

A little off topic but when you installed the new leafs do you lube them with anything? Also what kind of grease did you use on the bushings, did you use the standard bushings that came with the OME springs or the urethanes??

I have had my leafs for 4 year now and they have been grate.

 

Deaver U748's been holding up for the last year on my truck (k37's didn't). Daily driven with steel bumper, 2 spares, RCI rack, and tent. Loaded up even more on trips with 10 gals of extra fuel, 10gals of water, fire wood, and food.

Fully loaded here in Death Valley in February.

 

I have Alcan custom springs. Very happy with these. My static load is around 1,100lb. Ride is smooth, squat is eliminated when I tow the boat, and I would recommend this solution to anyone in a similar situation.

 

Urethanes and new shackles, but I didn't do the install. I had a shop I have used before do the front and rear and alignment at the same time. I don't have any help unless my stepson is around and he is USCG... so he is on duty most of the time. I'm in the market for a used FJ so I can have my truck down for a week or more and still get around. Hauling parts on my Harley just isn't much of an option... lol

 

Did they make a whole new pack? Or did they take what you already had and just added a leaf?

I was talking to them and they suggested just keeping my pack and adding a leaf.

I’ve got Deaver U-748s and have had them for about 18 months now. Close to 40K miles, with a constant load of my ARE Z-series, a Bedslide, Dometic fridge, one pair of tire chains, and a tote full of basic crap in the bed. Somewhere in the 500# range.

So far, so good. No sag and they still perform great. If I had any more constant weight, I’d think hard about a few other options though. I believe Deaver will add some spring rate via custom order, Alcan will make anything you want, or a 3” pack if I really wanted to go all in.
