Spindle lift with oem wheels? It is possible

So I had been doing some research on spindle lifts for my 2wd crewmax. What I am wanting to know is can I run my oem 18’s with a 3.5 spindle lift? And if yes then which brand? The only pic I can find of a SL with stock wheels is this truck...

 

Yes you can..... any brand CST or Maxtrac will work because it kicks your wheels out one inch on each side.

 

Ive looked at it too, i believe they have too much backspacing. Stock rims are just over 6 inches of backspace

 

Yeah according to the wheel specs on the websites that it will not work. But I have seen pics of trucks running stockers.

 

I mean even the truck cst has as the display truck has oem wheels on it. But the back spacing isn’t correct

 

I ran a set of stock steelie 18s on my truck after my spindle lift and had no issues.

What brand spindle you got?

 

I believe you have to use wheel spacers to clear the spindles.

 

I have Maxtrac the spindles themselves push the wheels out 1” each side. So they clear everything fine. It’s equivalent to a +35 offset wheels with the stock tire and spindle set up.

 

That’s what I don’t want to do bc I’m already have have to run them on the rear.

 

Stock wheels will not work. Read cst website.

 

There you have Maxtrac will work and CST won’t... actually now that I think of it Maxtrac push the wheels out more the. CST so that could be why it worked for me.

 

In re reading the cst info, something doesn’t make sense.

They say “up to 9 inch width wheel with 6 inches of backspacing max.”

This is non sensical, it doesn’t matter what width you run, backspacing is a fixed measurement of hub to rear face of the wheel.

Yeah I know, kind of confusing! I have always been interested in how spindles work, but for the past 10 years I have had a 4wd Tacoma trd off-road. Two weeks ago I had to sell my Tacoma since my wife and I now have three sons. So now that I have a 2wd I’m very interested in a spindle purchase.

I love the 18s that came on the truck and I don’t want the extra cost of having to get spacers or new wheels .

 

Okay so I have made my mind up and I want to go with a set of MaxTrac spindles for my crewmax! Does any have a set they would like to sell? Or maybe know someone with a set?

I figured I would try the used market first before buying new.

so pretty much a 275/70/18 will fit no problem and you might be able to squeeze a 285/70/18 on there but it will be close

 

Ahhhh now that makes a lot more sense. The dropped down spindle position of the tire is where the width problem is.

@throughitalldude is running a 275 tire which makes perfect sense

Explains why all of the pictures online of the stock wheels on the spindle trucks have small stock tires lol

I am actually going to be selling mine soon. I never got them fully dialed into how I wanted them but I am going to switch over to a suspension lift in the coming weeks. I didnt like how they rode for my taste..... the guys at maxtrac say i am a little too picky :/ but love the amount of lift and stance they give the truck. If your interested DM and we can talk about it.

 

How did they ride any different than stock?

 

It feels much more planted then stock. but I originally had aftermarket 12+ offset wheels so that with the spindle stance put me at -13 offset so I could squeeze 35" tires like I wanted (one reason I am switch to a suspension lift). Its more reactive to the road then my old truck was and that is not what I'm chasing for this truck. I am also told my 20's dont help with that either when I took the truck to Maxtrac the guy said I am a little bit of a perfectionist and that I should be with something more like a strut lift. Some have said that these paired with better shocks like 5100's make them amazing but I dont want to go any taller then I already am so I am kind of forced to ditch to swap the shocks. I had Maxtrac on my Tacoma when i was younger and loved them as well but now I am chasing something completely different. Every shop who drove the truck said they love how the truck drove, one guy said it was the best he ever felt a toyota drive ...... (hater lol)

 

Is it too mushy in the corners now?

 

No not at all cornering is great with these I would say long bumpy road at highway speeds it’s more sensitive then stock. The steering is more sensitive but again I’m running stock black shocks. I would have tossed 5100s in there but even the lowest setting is a 3/4 lift and I want to stay at 3.5 cause the truck just barely clears my garage doors now.

 

I feel ya! I put 5100s on a week or two ago and REALLY wish they had a factory (no lift) setting like the ones on my Tacoma had.

 

Agreed!! Someone needs to make a shock at factory height that offers better performance like the 5100

 

You can turn adjustable coil-overs down to stock height

 

This is true! But not looking to spend that much on suspension because I really don’t off-road too much.
