Tundra spacer lift questions

I’ve had quite a few lifted vehicles over the years. Some with spacer lift, some with actual suspension lifts (coilovers). I’ve never heard of an issue with snapping suspension components with a spacer lift until I stumbled upon someone stating it happens in tundras. I started to look into it and have found a few instances of it happening to people. I was going to throw a spacer lift on the 2020 tundra I’m currently waiting on, hopefully the truck comes in soon, just for looks mainly. I don’t offroad, other than occasionally driving on the dirt roads of upstate NY to go on trips or to friends houses. My question is how common is this issue? I haven’t ever heard of it with other manufacturers and really don’t want this to happen to me. The spacer lift is appealing due to the cost. I don’t want to throw a bunch of money into suspension. I know the benefits of bilsteins 5100/6112’s or high end coil overs but for me it’s not worth sinking that much into it. I just wanted to do a 3/1 or 3/2 kit fit some 295/70/18’s or 295/60/20’s (can’t decide on rim size yet lol) to give it a nice clean look, but this has me worried

 

It only happens if you do not put a spacer on your bump stops. The OEM shocks that are used with the spacers don't have the stroke length to work with the longer assembly. A bump stop spacer keeps it from traveling too far and hit the bottom.

 

The bump stop spacer that I see some kits come with is only like 1/4”, is that long enough?

It all depends on the lift kit. I had the rough country n2.0 3" lift struts, it came with 1" bump stop spacers, I switched to the boss coilovers and they came with just a washer to space them. Where in NY?

 

My brother has been running top spacers on OE TRD coilovers for 100k miles. Tires are 35's. No idea what brand it is, dealer installed.

 

Whatever comes with the kit should be sufficient. It is different depending on the kit, for instance a top spacer and an in-coil spacer will affect the assembly differently. Also, due to the geometry of the suspension, 1/4" at the bump stop location may result in an inch or more at the wheel location. The bump stops are close to the pivot point, compared to the wheel.

 

That kit includes taller spindles that maintain factory geometry. He has no more suspension travel than a stock truck. It just sits taller.

 

Just my opinion, but unless you're doing some serious off-roading, a spacer lift/level kit is perfectly fine. I debated for a long time about going the Bilstein 5100 route, but after doing a bunch of research and talking to several people, including a trusted friend who is a mechanic, I went with the Tuff Country 2" billet aluminum leveling kit and couldn't be happier. Looks good, price was reasonable, rides the same as factory, the kit included a differential drop, and my TSS still works perfect.

I have the Readylift 3/2. Amazon has the best price on it. Perfectly fine for what your goal is. I run 18x9 0 offset wheels with 285/70/18's. The 285 is a 34 and only about a half inch smaller that the 295/70, and 10 pounds per tire lighter. Just another option to consider.

 

This kit is great, comes with everything you need including Diff drop and Bump stop extensions. I ran spacer lifts in my 2006 Tacoma and Now in my 2019 Tundra with no issues

This is what I have. Just make sure you order the right kit depending on what you want to do in the rear. They have one that is just the front and one that includes a 1.5" spacer block for the back.
