Do you think Toyota will take responsibility for the 2nd gen bed rust?

I've been reading that there are a lot of 2nd gen Tundra owners experiencing rust in their beds. I found some significant rust after I pulled the liner from my recent purchase. Had I know about this problem beforehand I would spent a little extra time looking over my truck before buying it. I probably would have passed had I seen what I see now. I would not have expected this rust on a west coast truck.
This is not what I would expect on truck this new. I'm wondering if there are enough owners out there that could make an issue with Toyota and fix them like they did the frames.

    I doubt it.

The friction from the plastic liner is the cause.

EDIT: I haven't been up on things around here lately and have missed that some Tundra beds are reportedly rusting from the bottom up. Personally I have seen a lot of rust issues from drop in liners, and I assumed this was also the case, which it may not.

those plastic liners are really bad for that. best is to fix the current rust then line-x the whole bed.
check underneath see if the rust made it through.

The rust bubbles up thru the bottom. That's the cross frame that traps moisture. Mine was pretty bad. Used steel mesh filler and fiber glass to patch it up, then herculiner over it. Used fluid film on the underside.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
My 2008 had that rust problem as well. I noticed mine the morning of my Line X appointment in 2015.

I spent a lot of time talking with Toyota Corp. and they told me that they did not have a fix but to keep any repair receipts in case it turned into a recall.

I took it to a body shop and for under a grand they removed the bed and cut out 4 areas where the bed bolts are and welded in new steel plates and re rustproofed those areas. Than I returned to Line X for the sprayed liner.

In 2017 I traded it in for a new Tundra.

I'm not good any kind of bodywork. I can R&R and align body panels but I'm crap at welding and patching metal. I guess I'll have to find a good body shop that can fix this. I feel I bought this truck on blind faith. I have an OT POS truck that's twice as old as this Tundra that's had a bed liner all it's life. There is no rust out of any kind except for surface rust. It came from Minnesota and has never spent any time in a garage. This Tundra is supposed to replace it. I'm really bummed. I should have spent more and bought a Tacoma DC.

Toyota knows about it but wont do anything. The foam sealer under the bed at the braces hold moisture and rust up from underneath. I filed a claim when I found mine rusted pretty bad and Toyota said they wont fix it cause it was out of warranty. But they were kind enough to write me a 7k estimate to replace the bed and repaint it.

They sure were "kind" to you. I was apprehensive about buying another Toyota. I've never had a great experience with any Toyota that I've owned previously. I never kept any beyond a 100K because I got nickle and dimed for all kinds of annoyances that would crop up, all after the warranties expired. I'm hoping the bed rust is the only thing I'll need to deal with but the AIP issues that seem common is worrisome. Mine has had it repaired twice by the original owner, both times the dealer paid.

I Posted about an 08 I looked at, from the outside it looked deceptively perfect. The bed has one support that is almost detached from rust. Had a bedliner.

Since Toyota nickels and dimes people after all warranties are expired, I’m just wondering what other vehicle manufacturer will continue to cover repairs after their warranty expired. I want one of those and never have to worry about paying for any repairs ever again.

I think its unlikely. Prior to ford going to aluminum their owners were having rust issues in 5 years or less.

My 08 had this issue as well in a couple spots. I'm gonna use a rust proofing like fluid film along all truck bed seams once a yr.

From what I read it took a class action to get Toyota to pay up for the bad frames they put under some of their trucks. No automaker voluntarily recalls anything without someone else putting the squeeze on them.
I'm sticking with this truck regardless what comes my way. I could never sell it without disclosing the bed rust and I doubt anyone would want it unless I sold it at a big loss. It was my oversight not to look under the liner but the rest of the truck looks really good.

Well its a lesson for all of us, thanks for sharing. I wouldn't have thought to look under the bed cover thing. Looking at the pics, doesn't look Too bad. But yes it would bother me too. Luck.

Oh most are pretty bad full thickness rust. I just haven't poked at them yet. They're like festering pus filled scabs. Think gangrene.

I asked the dealer they said it was out of warranty, they suggested a good body shop. I am just waiting for Spring to remove the bed and examine it thoroughly. I think my bed needs support frame as well in addition to patching the holes in the bed.

Keep your eyes out for a used rust free bed, you may get lucky and find the same color for a reasonable cost.

It's probably a long shot if I find one even the same color. Do you think I should change the fuel pump if I go that route?

Sorry I'm not qualified to answer that one @bleach
I haven't heard of any fuel pump issues with our trucks, but I'm not a Toyota Technician.

Unfortunately I live in the rust belt so rust is a common issue around here. I will sometimes see ads on Craigslist "rust free truck beds". Seems like a guy goes to junk yards down South and buys the beds, hauls them up North and resells them. I have also seen white ones that were take offs from work trucks with utility beds.

Just offering an idea in case.

I know you are bummed about it, and I would be too, I hope you get her repaired/rust free so it's off your mind one way or another.

Unfortunately this is not true in the case of the tundra bed rust issues. The beds are rusting from the underside up. There are many owners that have had spray-in liners since day one with the same issue in the same spots. Toyota knew it was a problem and offered a TSB (unlimited miles & 60 months). I discovered mine at the 6 yr mark and was SOL, the quote i got from Toyota to fix it was $9500!!!

I wish that part of the bed could be purchased. Mine looks pretty bad, too. Every time I hook up the 5th wheel it worries me more. Yes I am aware that the hitch is supported by the frame. I just hate looking at it.

Let me tell you I have a 08 with only 87k miles found my rust in the bed around 65k. I can tell you also the rust comes from the bottom up. It's not the bed liner this time like almost every other truck. The support rails under the bed trap water in those spots that's why it's so common amd exact places on every one of these tundras. And a body guy told me ots not over the 3rd gen owners are going to have the same problem

Thanks for sharing ill be checking mine out. Now that i'm thinking about it my 10 Tacoma seemed to have a permanent plastic factory liner. This appeared much more durable than the drop in on my tundra. Had Yota done the same on tundras the issue potentially could've been avoided?

Well I'm not convinced I have also seen where a spray in liner was installed new and the tundra had bubbles in it they took it up and it was the same situation as mine as well

I am learning about this in this thread. I haven't been very active on here and must have missed all the noise. Wth Toyota?

The word needs to get out to all Tundra owners at all the other forums. It's time for all Tundra owners to start making an issue with Toyota to get these beds fixed for free. The owned up for the frames now it's time for the beds since it looks like a wide spread issue. Only 60 months and unlimited miles is BS.

I have had LINE-X since day one and seeing the rust push the LINE-X up every time i looked back there bothered me so much I put in a plastic liner...while not out of mind its at least out of sight!! With the plastic liner I also don't have to worry about dropping something on those spots and puncturing the LINE-X.

I'm probably going to ditch the plastic liner and just use a rubber mat. The only thing it looked like there was something missing under the bed rails when I took it out. Is there something that goes under the rails when you don't have the liner?
