I know it's been discussed. Anyway. Wife and I were looking at used 4 Runners. She has always been a Lexis type, but hers is a 2006 RX330. We are at the Toyota dealer down in SA where I bought my Tundra, and man her eyes lit up when she saw that grey2014 GX with 75K on the clock. Budget was 25K, which will get you a RAV4 new.

Damn RX has blown a seal somewhere and dumped a quart of engine oil since Monday. I couldn't off-hand find it and was pretty pissed that she hasn't bought a newer vehicle. Tired of working on that front wheel drive thing with 250K on the clock. I'll fix it on my own time now.

What does the hive think of the GX? Tundra engine, 4WD and pretty solid the more I looked at after we got it home. Anything to be aware of? TIA.

Rock solid imo. My mom had an 04. My neighbor still drives it.

Ride on that gen was very rigid, im sure newer one is nicer

We love our 2015 GX460 premium; now at 37k miles.
We looked at the 4Runner for the size and look but the interior and features were bare.
We looked at the Highlander for the interior and features but the exterior was not at all what we liked. The GX was the best if both worlds.

Thanks for the response. I like bare, but the wife likes the Lexis package. I think they have more room than the 4 runner but on the same chassis. I'm an SR5 upgrade type. I haven't driven it yet. It's hers. I'm sure she will find something in the road to run over and knock the front end out of alignment PDQ. :)

The only down side to the GX is the running boards and lower front bumper when you start wheeling it.

Thanks for the vid. She'll probably just be wheeling it through the median

    We have a 2018 4 Runner and a 2013
LX570. I personally love the GX and kind of wish we’d bought one rather than the LX. It’s a just touch larger than the 4Runner, has AWD and the nicer Lexus interior. From what I read about them, they’re bulletproof.

Got it. That LX is a big honker and nice. She's coming from a RX. The GX is pretty big for her. It took me a couple of weeks to get comfortable with driving my Tundra. She is Asian and a terror on the road. All that fascia on the front may be at risk. :). I'm sure the brakes will need an overhaul pretty soon too after she drives it. Especially with that V8 she has never had

I think that’s right on. The LX drives smaller than the Tundra, plus it’s quieter/smoother and the interior is beautiful, but there’s no getting around the width when you’re parking it vs the 4 Runner. We bought the LX used last year and in retrospect, I wish I’d looked harder at used GXs because it would have met our needs better. My kids always take our 4 Runner as it’s easier to park in the school parking lot. From the sounds of it your wife will take great care of the GX... or something like that. And as durable as the GX seems to be, I’m sure it will stand up to her “care.” Lol

Just making noise here but we just bought a 2020 4runner Off Road Premium about three weeks ago for my wife and love it. I bought a 2020 1794 Tundra in December, we can't figure out who wants to drive what lol. I love the 4runner's off road capabilities but it's also really cool to drive, she loves driving the Tundra because "it's so big" o_O. As of now I'm in the Tundra and she's in the 4runner but damn I like them both!! I have a set of 6112/5160 ready to install on the Tundra just have to figure out a tire size. As far as the 4R we plan on going all out with suspension, wheels/tires, and bumpers. It's so BA especially with the proven 4.0 and all made in Japan. I'm sure it will last longer than the Tundra.

A disclaimer to my previous post. I was set to go all out on the Tundra (King,Icon,Fox) but settled on the Bilstein because now that we have the 4R the attention will go to it as far as mods just because of it's capabilities over the Tundra.

Wife leased a 15 and 17, nice vehicle. She really liked it.
Cons: Lexus recommends premium gas, actually put mid grade in every other fill up.
Big Ass swing rear door., instead of hatch or split hatch / tailgate. It just bothered me how big it was.

I am all for modding from a good base but the GX is my wife's vehicle; she won't let me touch it. No wheels, no lift, no mods of any short. I was an advisor in the purchase but ultimately it was her choice.
Besides test driving, I've actually never been in a 4Runner so I'm not the best judge of space. From what I remember the added space was negligible. One feature that I was disappointed that did no transfer to the GX was the motorized rear window. The hinged rear door is a neat feature but I'd probably prefer the rain protection of the standard lift gate; it can be difficult to load the rear cargo bay if you back-in park.
We have definitely discussed going with the LX if we do ever get out of the GX but my wife isn't fully comfortable driving such a large SUV.

My wife was so scared to drive my 17 Tundra but I told her "If you can drive this then you can drive anything". Well after I convinced her of that she drove it, then her 19 Camry was totaled in Dec 10 so she had to drive the Tundra while I drove my company car. She loved it so much, I bought my 20 Tundra on Dec 23rd and today it has right at 5k miles on it because she would just wake up and drive it (she works 3:00-11:00). Now she has the 4R and has almost 2k miles in 3 weeks .

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
That's what I hate about them too. Sure sexy "off-road" capable (but no rear locker), no roll down rear window and your're gonna hit all kinds of things opening that 60's style station-wagon rear door, who thought of that genius idea in the 21st century, oh yeah Japan...haha....

@MotoTundra , does this count for off-roading with the GX? The parking lot was full so I parked on the grass today.

Hahaha absolutely! The overflow grass soccer field lot is what these babies were made for. (I kid, I kid).

My GX is in the shop getting a recall done and replacement of the rear height sensor. Can't wait to get it back! Also I can tell already I'm going to want a 460.....

Which recall? I am about to pull the trigger on Icons! I just say, this truck has really grown on me. The shifting stick in 4th gear on highway, my my.

Side curtain airbag recall on the 470's. Also having them look it over, and oil change. Have you had yours in for service yet? The dealer has treated me like a king and mine is an 05' w/153k on it. It's making me consider Lexus for the wife when it's time for something new.

Ah, got it. I think ours is part of the fuel pump recall. Haven’t received the letter yet though. Service is exemplary. We have had the 5k and 10k free service, although I paid for oil change at 5k. Free Lexus loaner, extended hours, they will pick up the vehicle at the house!

Ahhh gotcha. Agreed. Mine is almost an antique and they hooked me up with a loaded 2020 RX350 with under 5k miles as a loaner. Can't believe it.

    Pinkies up!
