What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Only 1 of 4 pistons on each caliper were working. This was after 15 pumps of the brake pedal.

 

It doesn't take a much bigger mirror to help a lot. My ranger mirrors are only a little bigger, they show me a lot more than the tundra mirrors. Cameras are great, but perspective that you get from side mirrors are really nice for seeing the back corner of a vehicle.

 

Just ordered stuff to do another retrofit set of headlights. I want to try some new things with paint and such so it will be fun. Maybe I'll get them done this weekend, but we'll see. I have garage work to do besides that. I'm still stoked!

 

It's probably going to stop a little better with the new callipers.

 

Did you notice any uneven pad wear? Any pulling to the side under braking?

That would affect your braking performance a bit!

 

My truck was assembled in late 2003 and has a 13WL on them so Id assume they are the bigger ones, Thanks!

 

I did not. The pads are 1.5 years old (12k miles). Seems like only one piston on the inside of each wheel caliper was working fully and the one below it was slightly working. Both outside pistons on each side were seized. So, maybe they were equal in their pressure keeping the drive line straight.

I just buttoned things up and did some more post-mortem analysis on the calipers. This pic shows the actual piston that was working the best after I pulled it out with channel locks. Nasty fluid in the chamber cup was from being trapped up in those other chambers even after I’ve bleed them 3 times prior recently.

Check out the corrosion built up on the side of the ‘best’ piston. I can imaging what the others would look like if I could pull have them out. Tried my best, but no can do. Locked up!

 

Finished the front brake 13WL upgrade. Took about 7 hours in total. Truck stops pretty good now. I’m still getting used to the new pedal feel that the upgrade gives. Feels like pedal distance is a *little* farther on the push. The braking is much more solid. I think tomorrow I’ll adjust the LSBP Valve down a bit so more bias goes to the front brakes now that the old stuck calipers are gone.

Tomorrow I’ll also be bleeding and adding the new DOT5.1 fluid for the final tune up.

 

Here is a picture of the Widdy Wack Bleeding System. Pretty straight forward. Got all the ‘Self Bleeders’ installed except for the LSBP Valve which will go in tomorrow on the final DOT5.1 install.

Bottom is a pic of a loose cotter pin that was making a rattling noise on the passenger side. I discovered the noise a few months ago when in a parking garage. The echoing sound caught my attention and stumped me until today when pulling off the bent up axle cap to straighten it out I could hear the tinkle sound of the pin rattling. Fixed it by bending the other leg up in the opposite direction.

It shifts the braking bias to the rear brakes. Normally, it would sensing a load in the bed and adjust the braking to the rear brakes. In my case, I manually ‘adjusted’ the nuts up to ‘fake’ a weighted bed. I did this as an experiment for better braking last year.

Turns out my braking improved. Now that I have new properly operating front calipers the adjustment is not needed as much and I do some slight shifts/tweaks.

The LSBP Valve is located under the bed near the drivers side behind the spare tire. The adjuster is located just above the rear diff housing.

 

Likely wasn’t seized yet. When you pump the brakes without pads only 1 piston coming out is kinda normal. Sticking is likely what you had

 

Sold my 1st Gen today, a little sad to see her go but she served me well She was an 04 double cab 2wd with 197k on the clock, never had a problem with it. Her she is rolling out of the drive for the last time

 

Sucks to see them go, but at least your not “upgrading” to a domestic!

 

Cool. Is that caliper an open loop system? I had lots of nasty dark fluid still up in there still with recent flush bleeds. Both those inside pistons on each caliper were frozen. I put Channel Locks on them to try and turn/twist them loose and no go. Couldn’t pry them out with BF screw driver either.

 

It’s just a big empty cavity in there for fluid.

I ordered from them. They sent me the wrong ones, then decided not to send tg he right ones and just refunded my money.

 

Installed some Bilstien 6112 up front and 5160 in back today(sorry didn't take before picture) the ride is soooo much better than the stock OE suspension.

 

Looks good, is your truck black, or that deep blue color? I have the same setup front and rear, which setting did you do the fronts at?

That looks great! I'm in the process of ordering exact same, 6112 front, 5160 rear. What setting did you go with? UCA's as well or not?
