What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Looks like a nice day. You are probably getting the same high pressure before a big snow dump like us.


We took a trip down south a bit to visit with family. The headwind killed my gas mileage I'm sure. We also had a headwind most the way back too. Always works out like that. I did some bsing with the father in law and showed him my leather. He really liked it a lot. We enjoyed the warm weather here, but I'm waiting to see how tomorrow is. According to the nws alert we are getting maybe 8" and where I'm at that can mean 12" or 4" because the wind picks up one way or another and pushes all the lake moisture. Or something like that. Snow pics tomorrow!

 

Just wrapped up an HD leaf spring and 5100 rear install.

 

Snow is supposed to arrive at 2am here, and -2 on Tuesday night. 69 today... quite a temp swing!

 

I’m with you. I just can’t pull the trigger on dodge ears cause I don’t wanna look like dumbo but I need something better than the crappy clip on cipa towing mirrors for the travel trailer camping trips

 

Pretty sure you have to compress the springs because you’re essentially moving up the bottom spring perch which will be impossible under pressure. Also Bilstein shows (depending on your truck 2x4, 4x4, AC or DC) what circlip ring equals what height

 

Somewhere there's a list that tells you which setting yields how much lift.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to disassemble everything to change the setting. But I could be wrong. May be sketchy but you may be able to compress the spring from the bottom up and undo the bottom bolt them move the collar up and remove the ring and reinstall on the next.higher setting.

 

I don't suppose you weighed that beauty, did you? I like the steel bumpers, but concerned about the weight. Have one on my 3/4ton Dodge that weighs in excess of 200lbs. Speaking of--think carefully about powder. Powder can take a beating from road debris, and tends to let rust start (and run) under the powder. I'm in the process of burning/chemical stripping my Dodge bumpers to re-do in Monstaliner. Anything I can touch up easily!

 

The coastal off-road bumpers weigh less than 100lbs, I think.
I'm pretty sure if it was heavier than that, I would not be able to move it by myself.

 

Didn't you look at the 2nd gen tundra mirror? I recall something about the studs being too far spread. Can you possibly move one of more of the studs in? Just thinking because I like the looks of the 2nd gen mirrors much more than the dodge. Not to mention I'm pretty sure I can get 2nd gen mirrors with power fold.

 

I weighed the packages when I received them. They came in at a total of 66lbs. I haven't weighed it since being fab'd up but ill try to get a weight after powder.

 

They changed in mid 03 I believe. They are stamped either WE or WL on the back. I don't have my pen, but if you zoom in you can see it.

 

If you're going to put energy into mirrors - why not just add camera's?

I got a new windshield on the RV & he forgot to install the rearview mirror. Well it was worthless anyway... I have a wireless back up camera out back that I leave on when driving, way better than the mirror was. I can't really tell from the side mirrors when I'm past someone, but the camera shows me exactly when i'm past them, or any hidden tailgaters. Adding a camera under each Tundra sideview would be over the top I'm sure, look appropriate, not be too big or expensive a project. (Honda Fitt has an amazing system with sideview cameras all built in with images stitched together on the dash screen.)

Just seems a perfect application to solve with technology.

 

Awesome advice. I’ve been using the little stick on mirror bubbles for years with great towing success, but I like your camera idea (lots of work but clean application). I’ve been mulling over a side blinker mod where I install some LED strip lights inside my side view mirror housings (or peel and stick underneath) similar to the puddle light thingy I did.

 

I think signals on the mirrors and puddle lights would be really nice.

 

Yeah. I already have the puddle lights under the door jamb which to me makes better sense than on the mirrors.

The side blinker thing seems really cool to me. Only obstacle now for me is finding a relay for LED to go into the fuse box, as I don’t want ‘resistors’ ugly wires everywhere.

Bonus would be a LED friendly blinker relay with the quick tap lane change option infused into it.

 

If you are adding load to the current blinker relay you shouldn't need to change anything for that. Unless I'm mistaken you get hyperblink when your relay has too little load. You could probably just tap into the turn signal wires somewhere around the inside fuse box.
Although the smart tap would be nice.

Last time I installed LED’s bulbs in my blinkers I got the hyper flash. This was years ago. Maybe I give it a go without a LED relay?

Two Yellow LED 6” side strips cost about $10 with 4’ length of wire.

 

Ive been wanting to get those for my truck as well, but ive seen that the taillight sizes from 04-06 are a little bigger than 00-03. if you do get them and they fit, let me know and i will have to order them as well. Amazon has an off brand that sells a taillight that looks similar in style that i got and i like them so far.

If you don't have hyperflash now and you add load to the circuit it shouldn't make it hyperflash.

 

It was long and hard work, but I managed to swap out my bed decals. I was trying to tie in the red TRD on the wheel caps with a little more red. Of course in this pic, you can't even really see the red in the TRD wheel caps, but in person, it's very obvious. Not sure if I like it, but I'll leave it for now...

 

Led flasher relay should be available at local auto part store. I bought one for my 03 taco at advanced auto. I think it was less than 10 bucks

Yes I have looked at those but they aren’t much bigger than the 1st gens unless you’re talking about the towing ones. And they want big bucks for those so I haven’t dabbled with them because of that. I’d have no issue drilling another hole in my door to make those mirrors work though.
