I'm one of those guys who likes to reasearch about engine oils and filters when I get a new vehicle to find what the community concensus is on best products to buy. It seems to not be a thing on here? Anyways, my first oil change (for me) is coming up soon and I am figuring out what to do. I've been using Wix filters for a while but the prices in my local store have gone up alot, to the point where OEM is the same price, so I plan on getting a toyota filter. For oil I was going to get some Rotella Gas Truck 0w20. Theres not much info about it online, other than that its just the older rotella T6 with a new label, so the bob is the oil guys dont like it. I've personally had great luck with T4 and T6, and this "new" gas truck rotella meets all the specs it should, is full synthetic, and is well priced (currently on sale at CT for 32CAD).

What have you guys been using for a well priced, but good quality oil? Also, are the OEM filters good?

Thanks, I know its a touchy subject typically, but I searched for a thread to read and couldn't find one.

My buddy uses mobil1 as well. I'm hoping the general feeling is that any decent 0w20 full synthetic oil is fine. If thats the case I will likely always just get whats on sale at Canadian Tire. That way I get the benefits of all the manufacturer's research lol.

No offense to the OP.... but these threads are silly. It’d be like you spending $50,000 contracting with your most reputable local engineering company for some product (say a pump), and this company has earned a reputation for designing what have proven to be among the most durable pump designs in the world. They deliver their $50,000 pump to you along with a maintenance schedule including a recommendation for the type of oil to use and other items to maintain. But instead of following their guidelines, which written by folks who have literally spent their entire lives designing, manufacturing and repairing these pumps, you go online and ask a bunch of amateurs who have used but never designed or repaired a pump to give you their opinion on how to take care of said pump. Just follow Toyota’s recommendations. A 10K interval and exclusively dealer recommended service was good enough for the million mile Tundra that was used to deliver oil field parts all over the US and Canada...

Toyota says 12 months or 10K miles for the oil. I don’t think anyone has ever gotten a Blackstone analysis back that said their oil needed to be changed out earlier than that.

Do you put toyota windhsield washer fluid in your truck? If yes, then you are dumb, if no, then you're a hypocrite.

To answer my question you could have simply said "I prefer OEM"

No offense to the OP is how I started my post. Sorry to offend you. But seriously, should I bring my own washer fluid to the dealer and ask them to use what I’ve provided rather than the stuff they’ve putting in? I’ve always just trusted the Toyota washer fluid and never gave it a moment of thought until now.

His analogy was one of the more reasonable and logical comments you could read anywhere online. And he did preface it with "No offense to the OP....", but I guess you don't trust the intention?

Also your analogy and question are specifically designed to offend and trap him into a lose-lose scenario. Engine oil and washer fluid serve two different purposes with completely different priorities. It's far from an apples-to-apples comparison. It's very possible and normal to defer to the expertise of Toyota engineering for something as critical as oil change recommendations, while choosing to use the washer fluid of your preference, without being a hypocrite.

I like the 0w-20 oil that is on sale. Amazon has one that I intend on using at some point. I change at 5k so I am not very picky.

I’ve always used mobil1 extended performance. Just recently bought some Pennzoil and I’m gonna try that. Read some reviews and tests. Supposed to be better than mobile1. But not quite as good as Amsoil. But for the price of Pennzoil at about $22 a jug, sounds good to me.

Saying "no offence" is always followed by something that is offensive, everyone has known that since grade school. He called me silly and used "no offence" to wash his hands clean.

Secondly, he described how my 50k invenstment should only get OEM oil because it was designed for it. Maybe you dont consider OEM washer fluid to be critical, but is OEM brake fluid, or tranny fluid? or coolant? how about light bulbs? they can catch fire...where do you draw the line on what is critical enough to go to the dealership for service? That was my point, i used washer fluid as an example to highlight the weakness in the argument. I reiterate, he could have told me he prefers oem because its the best and left it at that, he asked for this by denigrating my thread (which as Ive already said isnt a thread that I can find using the search function)

Lastly, I am here i good faith and called toyota to ask about this 12 month oil change interval and the price of their oil. The OEM oil is actually well priced (surprisingly) however my 2015 needs oil changes ever 8k km (about 5k miles). The oil was basically the same price as the aftemarket oils on sale, so I will likely just go with that and pick it up when I get my filter.

Been using Mobil 1 0w20. OEM filter. Serve my needs.
I buy filter in bulk (oem), get a case and you'll be set for the next 5-10 years. I change the oil once a year. Dont drive that much, gets less than 3k a year. A case of 10 filter will last me a long while.
I just bought some rotella for gas truck. With $10 rebate per 5gal jug. After rebate i end up paying $12 plus change per jug. I bought 4 jug. This will last me 2 yrs. I have 2 vehicles that uses 0w20.
It's all preference. You can beat it to death on the topic. Everyone will be different.

All of the premium synthetic oil brands out there (here in canada) are about 60 bucks for 4.5-5 liters regular price, and go on sale for 30-35 bucks. this would mean an oil change would be ~65 bucks plus filter. The OEM oil (unless they got mixed up with the price) is $6.70/liter, so an oil change is less that 65 bucks...and the oem filter is 8 dollars. Its actually cheaper in this case to go to the dealer for me to buy the supplies. I have to pick up my new headlights soon from the dealer, so I'll likely grab oil and filter while Im there. has anybody posted oil analysis on here for any oils? maybe I'll get my buddies mobil and mine done.

Not many people have. If you want to, you can. Share it with others.
I buy filters on eBay because my closest dealer is over an hour drive and my work schedule is terrible. Cant make it in time before they close.

Yeah, I have a 2015 too and have only gone to get oil change twice since bought in 2018, and am looking to do my own the next time 'round. Too many stories of low-paid techs making a mess, over-torqueing and losing bolts on the skid. I'd like to be the one responsible for the mess I make, not looking to pay for it lol

Yeah, I'll GTFO of my own thread. I searched "Engine oil" and "motor oil" and neither came up with much. I found one that was about the rotella oil in question, and thats it. Most forums have this topic as a sticky, or you can wade thorugh, as you put it, dozens of threads without looking for them.

Thanks for your helpful input though ;)

Sometimes search is finicky with the words needed to bring up the right topic. The link I put up for you I searched "oil analysis" because you mentioned it and I remember seeing it before and waded thru to the 3rd page of 6 I believe before finding it.

Agreed. I've often thought the search here just isn't very good. So let's give him some slack here. No reason to assume he didn't search first.

"Couldn't find one" is NOT the same as "there aren't any".

    Search
is an obstinate, uncooperative tool, and you'll soon learn it's capricious nature. Even if you do get a smattering of relevant results, you've only just skimmed the surface of what's available. The search feature is dominated by the most recent posts, and most of those are totally irrelevant to your search topic. Your thread is EXACTLY the same (title paraphrased) as one within the last two weeks. I dug deeper in the posts/threads to find it because I knew it was there.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/0w-20-engine-oil-brand-suggestions.60257/

Try BITOG.com for oil opinions...everyone here and there usually has an uninformed opinion with no basis in fact.

The thread you link I didnt see, I would have read it otherwise, and when I said I hadn't found any I wasnt lying. I searched and skimmed through them and didnt see the one that I eventually (later )found and acknowledged seeing. Since you describe the search function not being very good I'd expect you'd understand why/how I didnt find what I was looking for considering I'm new here. Ive read BITOG quite a bit, as I mentioned in the OP, but I find individual vehicles can be fussy, and there is often a consensus on what the vehicle likes the best, which is why I asked in the first place.

Since this is clearly a popular topic why not make it a sticky? that way there would hopefully be fewer people asking about it

I'm not sure about your definition of Killed, but I certainly havent been. Also, I've not been upset once here

My $.02: it is more important WHO does your oil change than what brand oil they use. I’d be more concerned that the clowns who cut corners at the oil change shops. Hence why I do my own oil changes. I’ve heard way too many horror stories to trust anyone else to do it right. Find a good full synth 0w-20 and change it yourself at the manufacturer’s suggested intervals. First time I changed mine on my new to me ‘13 w/ 75k miles, I found two bolts and a screw missing from the skid plate. A few more trips to the shop/stealership and who knows? They might lose a few more and just try to wedge it back up there without securing it!
