CAN THE 2003 V6 SOUND BETTER??

I am getting my dad's 2003 Tundra V6 next month with only 47K miles on it. I would like it to sound better than the little V6 that is has. Any suggestions? I don't have the cash flow for a complete pipe setup.

47K ? Not even broken in yet. You might try JBA Performance for an exhaust system. I have their headers on my 02 4.7 and they work great, but still need to change the rest to open it up a little. They have great quality stuff and you can look at the systems online. You can't do a lot mechanically like cams or fuel system mods but getting it to breath better will help. Look for a Fresh Air intake system like K&N or Air Raid. Hope that helps.

Yeah, only 47k miles. He is the second owner hardly drives it. My gmc is taking a crap on me so he's selling me the tundra. Not crazy about a 6 banger but I couldn't beat the price.

 

Take it to a muffler shop, have them cut out the stock muffler and weld a Flowmaster Delta 40 in it's place. The 4.0's seem to love the FM Delta 40 in my experience and they sound pretty good. I'd think you could have that done for about $200

 

Isn't it still the 3.4L? I had a Borla on mine. Others told me it sounded nice and I liked it.

Sorry, it was a long time ago. It began as a single outlet cat-back system but the tail-pipe got flattened while off-roading. In the end it was just a muffler. I'm guessing that they probably only have one offering it that configuration (single) for your truck. You'd have to contact a Borla vendor I suppose, or see if @dirtydeeds could make up a bolt-it muffler for ya.

 

I personally love the sound of the older Toyota V6 engine. For a V-6 I think they sound the best out of all auto makers. Unless we are talking a GN i'll take the sound of that thing spooling up any day of the week.

 

Totally be a smart ass!! I can take it!! hahaha. Like I said, I'm not a fan of the six banger. I haven't had one since I first got my 1983 ford thunderbird as my first hand me down car. But, the price was right. I'm selling my 02 GMC Sierra with 206K miles on it and giving the money I make to my dad for the 47K 2003 Tundra. I think it's a pretty fair deal if you ask me. She should last me a LONG time!!

 

Oh wow, didn't realize the 4.0 didnt come into play until the 05's, thought they would have had it in 03+ like the 4runner's.
The Delta 40 or a Magnaflow 13" would both sound pretty decent on the 3.4L from my experience as well.

 

The 4Runners always seem to get the goodies a year or two before the Tacomas. It can be easy to lose track.

 

+1 for the 40. Have one on my 3.4 Tacoma and for what it is it sounds good. Muffler shop had me out the door at $110, but he's a good friend

Yeah I know the Tacoma didn't receive the 4.0 until 05 with the Gen 2 release, figured the Tundra had it earlier since it's larger and was mid-cycle with a slight refresh in 03 already.

 

If you leave the exhaust running all the way out the back like stock it shouldnt be that loud. Noticeable, but not obnoxious on long drives. If you dump the exhaust at the axle(Like I tend to) then it gets a little louder since it resonates out from under the truck vs out the back/side.

 

I'd dump it out the back like it is now.

I saw some Tacoma's with the 50 series. How do those compare?

I have a friend that used to have a Chevy S10 Pickup that had a V6 but he had dual exhaust and headers on it so it did sound pretty good even though it was only a V6. They will never sound like a V8 but if you invest a little bit you can get a little rumble out it to suit your wishes. Despite all that this truck should last you many years of of fun driving and perform most anything on the road. After all it is a Toyota.

 

Www.dirtydeedsindustries.comOn a budget simply cut out the muffler and resonator if it has one. And weld in a BAmuffler. It's not the cheapest muffler out there. But it will last longest.

And I can size it according to how you want it to sound. If looking for pretty aggressive and drone isn't a concern I can make it very aggressive and it's actually a little less money.
