I sold a bunch of neutralizers in Maryland back in the late 80's... Try and find an established independent dealer that services your area, one that is familiar with Fleck control valves & Vortech tanks. $1500 give or take, more if you deal with a brand name franchise like Culligan & Rainsoft.

A whole house carbon filter (coconut shell carbon) is a nice home improvement.

I can't hurt anything, and a 1 cubic foot filter that back-washes automatically (or manually) every month should last 3 to 4 years, be sure and use a Vortech tank.

I'm sort of like the guy who is an auto mechanic and drives a jalopy. I have been in water filtration and purification for decades. Heck, I don't do anything on my house, except for a meltblown prefilter going into the hot water tank that was with the house when I bought it. Water here is brown sometimes coming from the co op because of the water heater converting the iron to color bodies. I only drink Miller Lite for my water intake. A big Blue 20" carbon filter works good with a Big Blue Hurrican Harmsco 1um prefilter. 1um absolute and girardia or other parasites are unlikely.

Those beds with the tanks are nice. Your body does not need ultrapure water. Those systems are for high tech manufacturing. Anything you would drink that is filtered to 0.2um is considered sterile because there will be no bacteria present in enough concentration to create colonies. Also, water filtered to that level is also used in WFI, like IV fluids.

Beer is mostly water, and if you research it's history you will find that it is safer to drink than water in many places. I have replaced many big Blue 20" carbon & micron filters, not because they don't work (they do), I replace them because few people maintain them as they should.

    Drink up!

Yes, for a whole house system carbon block BBs get spent PDQ though they still flow. Carbon blocks filter about 5um nominal. You keep the big particulate out of the pores they can do the job if you keep the flux rate reasonable. After 5 or 10K gallons depending on the concentration, of course, they need changing. Problem is that most plumbing sucks to try to split off your potable/kitchen system versus the toilet. Carbon filtering toilet water is a waste IMO

Long Island water was great 33 years ago. Now it has acetaminophen, nicotine and 1-4 dioxane in long island water. Can any of those Brita filter like systems remove the 1-4 dioxane?

I am familiar with the scrubbing tanks. I worked for 40 years in a lab. I went through an RO unit and then through 2 scrubber tanks. It produced 10 ohm water (reagent grade)

Brita is basically a mini-softener with carbon, it can reduce minerals, metals and chlorine for a short time.

Distillation is the natural process of purifying H2O for drinking, softening the raw water before it gets to the distiller reduces maintenance on the distiller and using a solid carbon block filter right before you use the distilled water makes it taste better.

Dolfyn Water Distillers are my favorite for residential use.

@Rex Kramer, you seem pretty up to speed on filtration...could you give me some recommendations on a good filter system?

    Situation is:
Water is all from local lakes. We treat with chlorine gas and ammonia. Ph is usually 7.2 up to 7.9. Our water system runs between 60 and 75psi depending on water tower level. Chlorine is always around 1.0 up to 2.0. Depends on the time of day, if the tank just filled or sat all day etc... however, since we are pulling from lakes there is always a taste to the water. I know it's safe, but we want to get a badass filter for our shop ice machine and water fountains. Our price range is pretty flexible. We were looking at these two but we want to be sure they will remove the lake water taste and some other dissolved solids.

Tldr; we want a badass filter to remove odor and other crap for some water fountains and an ice machine.

Option #1: 3/4" Aluminum Ice Machine Filter System, 5 gpm, 125 psi

    Option #2: 22"" x 8-1/2"" x 31-1/4"" UV Disinfection Unit with 8 Flow (GPM)

Your comments indicate that you need a large 10x54 or 13x54 Vortech tank with a control valve that automatically back washes once every 2 weeks. The media you want in these tanks is Coconut shell granulated activated carbon, you will want to dump and replace this GAC every 3 to 4 years.

Position this filter after the holding / chlorine tank, and right before the water feeds to the shop/home/ice maker... you want to filter all of the water before it is used.

Here is a 13x54 GAC system that I installed in Buckhead / Atlanta, it removes the chlorine, chemicals, taste & odors for the entire large house.

Bringing "different" water means they want to drain the line to make sure the smell/taste problem isn't from stagnant water at the pipe. Around here the city water is pumped to an above ground tower or standpipe and then gravity fed from there. They are required to keep a 24hr turnover rate at the tower to ensure fresh water is delivered to customers and limit bacteria growth. If your street isn't using much water, or doesn't have many folks on it, then the turnover rate at your street can be days and that's where it may get smelly. However based on the fact that you've had this issue for a month I'd say it's NOT a turnover problem. They just need to check that box off first before they do anything else.

@Rex Kramer we have an RO system under our kitchen sink and just had it serviced. Now it doesn’t work at all. Looked at the filters and they were very dirty. Like clogged dirty. They charge like $180 to come over and change 3 filters. Takes like 10 minutes. Anywhere I can buy filters and change myself???

Identify the system by brand name and begin your online search, pictures would help.

Some sort of whole house high-flow pre-filter should be used to protect your RO filters.

How often are you required to change the small pre-filter, and how long before you swap out the carbon?

Pre filter is 6-9 months and they gave me 4 extras for free including new o rings and lube. Big tank is 1 million gallons and it’s only like 300-400 for a new one. Most people I think that would be 7-9 years ish

    prefilter is large

I really like having it right off the main so the entire house gets good water, showers etc

Maintaining the pre-filter is paramount to keeping the carbon filter in top shape for more than 4 years, 7-9 years is a huge stretch because the water will begin to channel over the same path. This is just one of the reasons I recommend a valve that you can back-wash, back-washing flushes out any debris that may have been collected and it resettles the media bed so there is no channeling or compacting.

ya they said a million gallons in the big tank so it depends on usage obviously. The new cartridge isn’t that expensive so it’s good with me if it comes up a little short of that . Supposedly they have this thing designed to combat channeling but we’ll see how it goes. So far it’s great

and ya the prefilters are super cheap and easy to replace

the whole system really wasn’t that expensive with the coupons they had etc

i could easily backwash this if needed so I’ll keep that tip in mind , you do that as part of the setup anyway so it’s really easy with the valves they give you

That makes sense. We are a relatively small suburban city (approx. pop. 24,000) and we use a decent sized water tower.
There are about 40 houses on my street, but I couldn't tell you about anyone else's water usage...
I got caught up in other things and haven't called the city back but I will. I want to see what they're willing/able to do, or if it will be made "my problem".

Not bad for the money. I think ECOwater makes them... buy a venturi repair kit for it, and go online to see just how easy it is to repair yourself.

Thanks Rex, I did look it up and it seams real easy. I get that unit for about 500$CAN. I'm a fire sprinkler systems installer I work with water equipment all the time at a lot higher pressures.

There will only be 2 of us living in the house.

You may want to consider a distiller for drinking & cooking water as well as water to make ice, softening really hard water requires a really high exchange rate leaving sodium in the water.

They are not cheap, but they are the best.
