I've been informed that driving a 15 year old truck makes me a "cheap ass" and that I'm "delusional" when I say I still have years of life left in it. I'm gonna guess the person that said this isn't familiar with Toyota trucks...

Seems like a good description, but haven’t actually used them before.

The instructions say open the nut a half turn or more, then start pumping. Air isn’t allowed to come back in due to the check valve. Re-tighten after bleeding.

I remembered earlier that I forgot to order the Proportioning Valve Bleeder. These things are like $15 a pair. Hate to buy another set just for one.

Yeah, the guy talking crap owns a Dodge Journey that he had to buy because it was the only new vehicle he'd get financed since he rolled a ton of negative equity in after buying new vehicles every 3 years...

Yup, pretty much. I have the title to 4 vehicles in my hand. The only car I'd put myself in debt for is gonna be something cool. Used audi rs4, or something along those lines. I'd love a cts-v wagon with a 6 spd.

I’m so glad I decided to NOT buy a new truck in 2018. I’d be bitching about leaky differential covers over in turd gen section right now. Not to mention my stacks disappearing into Toyota finance coffers.

I knew this lady who died, without a will, with 6 million in the bank. It went to the State.

Anyways, she lived in a small dumpy apt and drove a 20 year old 1980’s Chevette. Super nice lady. Was sad to hear of her passing from a mutual acquaintance years later who informed me of all the public details.

 

After a couple hard lessons, I'm not really a fan of vehicle debt unless absolutely nescessary. I used a line of credit to buy my truck after taking a huge loss to unload my piece of shit f150. Paid it off in a little over a year. We pay about $200 / month on The Woman's car, a 2013 Corolla S with only 33,000 miles on it, which we paid the same for as my truck. Needed a vehicle on short notice and didn't have the cash handy. Oh well, it'll be paid off by next summer at the latest. Both our vehicles combined cost less than a single brand new vehicle.

I would love a 2017 Tundra crew max TRD Off Road. I would not love the $600+ per month payments, even though I could afford it. I'd rather buy fishing gear, guns, ammo or save up for a boat.

 

Absolutely. Great minds think alike. All 4 of my vehicles might be worth $8k. Instead of car payments I make parts payments. And video games, guns, etc...

 

.. and even then, I wouldn't. Unless it was one HELL of a vehicle. All my vehicles have been bought used. Every one is amazingly reliable. No car payments in the entire family, period.

 

Apparently the OEM outer boot is more plastic, I’m not 100% sure my research was not conclusive.

 

Man I've owned 1 used Ford ranger - it went thru like 3 alternators and a tie rods and a radiator. Decent truck.
2 tacos that barely ever needed attention beyond timing belt and water pump and now the tundra.
I'll just stick to used Toyota trucks for now on.

 

This has worked for me since I first bought my 1998 Toyota Tacoma dealer demo with 5k miles. Of all the Toyota trks/suvs I've owned, the only one I don't regret selling is the 2017 Tacoma I bought new. I'm constantly shopping for good deals on used Toyota trucks/SUVs.... it's almost a hobby. The only non-Toyota trk/suv I've owned since 1998 (not counting the wife's car) was a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero (full-size, not the sport). Those things are incredibly capable offroad stock (rear locker and fits 33s with no suspension changes other than cranking up the torsion bars) and like LCs of the same era they are vehicles made for 3rd world travel, but with all the accessories to keep soccer mom's happy. The running gear on those puts 3rd Gen 4Runners to shame. I miss that one too...

 

LOL... I would bet $1000 today that my Tundra will out last a brand new Dodge journey AND cost me less in non-maintenance items/non-consumable parts/labor for the next 15 years....

 

I'm confident that in 30 years we're going to see a ton of 2UZ-FE's still on the road. The bodies will look like hell but they will be running.

 

Going to do my interior paint trim ‘round three today’. Remember, I tried a few test pieces on the first round. Second round I over did it on some red.

Bought some Toyota Black lacquer enamel yesterday and will be coating over all the black bed liner’d interior trims and most of the red. I love the Rustoleum bed liner on my outside trim, but used on the inside its only ok. I feel the lacquer enamel will provide a nicer level of finish.

Last time, I bit off too much and did it all in one day. Actually, the disassemble/paint took a full day. Reassemble took a half day the following.

Today will be all trim, except doors. Doors are the time killer and will be tomorrow. Going to add a final round of natural fiber insulation in between the door panels and plastic while in there.

Brakes on Tuesday/Wednesday (Wheelers braided lines front/back and MK Kashiyama rear drum proper rebuilds). Maybe I gain a few horsepower with all this work?

 

Yeah I've heard the Montero and the Nissan Patrol both could hold their own against Toyotas offerings. But I don't think it's fair to compare a full-size montero to a compact 3rd gen 4runner

 

I think it's fair because a 1999 Montero had a sticker price about almost identical to fully optioned 4x4 Limited 4Runner w/locker....and it was a much nicer vehicle in terms of drive train (standard 4x4, manual shift transfer case, center and rear differential locks on the Winter Package, which most of them had) and options (Infinity sound systems, adjustable suspension, etc). Reliability is a wash...4runner a 9 and Montero an 8.5. If you ever see a 2 or 2.5 Gen Montero, take a look at the 1/2 shaft compared to a 3rd Gen 4Runner. It's ridiculous. It's like comparing a wide receiver to a linebacker. The Montero was not that much bigger than the 4Runner (and was smaller than a LC for sure), but it did have a 3rd row of seats that you could remove and actually have a ton of space in the rear to put in a set of drawers etc. Or haul 7 people if you needed to. Another cool thing about the Monteros is the front and rear seats fold completely flat in such a way that you can sleep on them. I've owned both and know them pretty well. I just sold a 3rd Gen (wish I hadn't, recurring theme for me it seems) and I'm searching for another one with a manual (the one thing the 4Runner trumps it in...no manual available in a Montero, you have to go to a Sport, which I'm not keen on), not really looking for a Montero at the moment. But, if I was looking for a reliable/capable/reasonably priced SUV I planned to use for an offroad camping setup. it would be a 2-2.5Gen Montero all day long. A comparable Montero (age/mileage/specs) is currently 1/3-1/2 the cost of a comparable 3rd Gen 4Runner these days. That's alot of maintenance/accessory money left over and you have a significantly more capable rig to begin with.

In short comparing Toyota and Mitsibishi SUVs of that era...

Reliability

LC/4runner/Montero>Montero Sport


The only reasons I can see to own a late 90s 4runner over a late 90s Montero is if you must have a manual or need the absolute minimum of size...admittedly 4runners do drive a bit smaller. Hell, 3rd Gen 4runners are so stupid in price now, LC\LXs of that same time period are a better deal these days. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Toyota trk/suv guy all the way, but I have a real soft spot for 2-2.5 Gen Monteros...they are seriously underappreciated.

 

Well now you got me interested in learning more about em. I check the web for 97-04 Toyotas with 5vz and manual trans at least once a week. Found a couple I'm interested in but haven't mustered up the courage to pull the trigger on any of em.
