Do I remove and polish my spark plugs today? Or, do I dust off my air filter? Maybe both?

 

I'm about to hit 170k on my '02, and the valve covers have never been off the heads.
... I've removed the engine covers from both of my Tundra trucks for a cleaner look under the hood.

 

What would a skilled eye look for in these pictures? What would a sign of wear look like? I know some of the other Toyota engines are prone to sludge if the oil isn't changed.

This was my beater 02 Corolla when I did the VC gaskets around 180k.

 

'95 V6 Camry with 265K, a little sludge remains after back to back SeaFoam treatment and oil changes. I was pretty gunked up, but the SeaFoam cleaned it up really well.

 

My non skilled eyes when looking have always noticed how much if any sludge or varnish exists not only at the camshaft lobes and surrounding area but the underneath portion of valve cover itself which would tell me I have lacked in proper maintenance....pcv, quality oil/filter, proper time frame etc. Years ago my DIL(God rest his soul) nudged me in working on my 69 C10 valve adjustment. Thru that he learned me what to look for and it was also at that time I learned I'll never ever use Quaker State in my vehicles. He explained how varnish can cause things to stick especially rings sticking, which can cause compression loss, blow-by and oil consumption.

 

I'm pretty unskilled, but I always look in the corners for build up, varnish, film build up, and wear on the cam lobes. Almost all engines will be golden, unless it's had synthetic since day one. Darker colors mean cheap oil and/or infrequent changes.

 

Gotta say, I agree with the man. 1st gen IS the best gen.

 

Anybody relocate their washer fluid reservoir?

This and possible tire rub when off roading and the suspension is cycling and tires and turned. I painted the sheet metal that the reservoir is attached to black so it isn't as noticeable
Before paint and on the opposite side. I actually trimmed this side, but I can't trim the other because it supports the washer fluid res

 

I haven’t relocated it but I DID manage to slice through the fluid delivery line off-roading. Came down off a steep set of boulders and a tree, saw my buddies gathered at the bottom looking concerned toward the front passenger corner with heads cocked. We were all super relieved that the copious loss of fluid was something I could do without.

Later realized there was enough line remaining that I just reattached it. Haven’t moved the reservoir but added this to my mental map of stuff to pay attention when I’m planning routes through obstacles.

 

I don’t know how long my truck has been residing in the devils armpit(the southwest) but batteries don’t last long in the heat, and my date code is from 2014, so I know it’s running on spare devil whiskers. I’ve got an X2 in our 4runner(group31 which is way over kill) marine grade. I like the extra power poles on the marine grade, so I will probably do the same for the truck, but I’ll stick with the group 27. usually the pipsqueaks will honor online coups in store, but not today, I’ll order it tonight and go in tomorrow, 20%online coup + 30$ mail in rebate. I’m also doing this now because I had low water in cells.....over filled them......and they puked all over and now paint is peeling on the frame and rusting! So I will scrub clean and spray with rust inhibitor while I have everything out.

Can that rack handle both of those recovery boards? Stacked side by side instead of nestled like a lego?
it took me a while to understand the straps on the tow hooks, are they to not scratch the paint on the tow hooks? I assume when those fail from a recovery they would launch at the recovery vehicle instead of further scratching the paint on the tow hooks? Seems super smart too me!

 

Anyone running a Leitner ACS bed rack system on a first gen? Im trying to figure out if I can get two dirtbikes in the bed while having a storage pod mounted on each side. Having a hard time finding pics of a first gen with this setup.

 

Properly equiped for a dodge-bag in the starsucks drive through.

 

What is the benefit of that second set of posts?

 

Adding accessories and not having to disconnect main lugs when messing with accessories

 

hnmm crazy idea.. but since i have a regular cab, interior space is precious.

Im thinking about having custom seat covers made to replace the originals. but on the backside instead of a pocket, Do a Molle panel so i can attach various things to the backs of the seats... just a thought. but i think it would actually work pretty well in terms of utilization of the space



or just make the whole back wall Molle and get a multi piece spare tire tool instead of the big one piece one.

Don't like to rain on someone else's parade, but here's what was noticed with changes of a battery's post connection type and why while growing up when only the conical post existed on batteries.

The various type of battery post on a battery makes the battery a universal type that can be accepted by all vehicles from various manufactures, and not vehicle specific due to having one type of battery post on it.

Some vehicles use the traditional SAE external conical type post design located at each end and top of battery. Another external conical type post design is the JIS type used on early Japanese vehicles, and is very similar to the SAE post but smaller in size. Clamping battery terminal ends on both negative and positive cable ends connect to these type post.

Some batteries have a stainless screw attachment adjacent to the conical post which purpose is for marine battery connections. Marine outboard motors typically use wing nuts or nuts to fasten down the battery cable connector ends to the battery.

Some manufactures use male threaded bolt attachments at the end of the vehicles battery cables. The cable bolt attaches to the batteries flush mounted female thread post. That's what those screw into flush mounted post at each end and sides of the battery are for.

Vehicle battery manufactures various post locations are incorporated to the battery for the aforesaid reason, and that reason only.

Instead of using a vehicles starting battery, Non vehicle starting batteries specific for car stereos are called car audio batteries and are often used for high end systems.

I miss my high top LEER, so I am looking to replace the new cab height cap I have.
Do any 1st Gen owners here use an A.R.E. Wedge Design Deluxe Commercial Unit (DCU)?
Something like this with sliding windows on the side, and double doors on the back that replace the tail gate.



If I can't find a suitable 8' high top cap for my 2002, I will probably replace the truck with an AWD 2010 to 2014 Toyota Sienna with the seats removed / folded flat and a partition installed behind the front seats.

 

I was going to say - not too much room between seat back & back wall, but you did mention being of a more efficient stature so you may have some room behind (& above?) the seat. I would think stuff attached to the backside of the seat would tend to swing & you'd feel it knocking or nudging the set as you drive - that would annoy me.

I'll suggest you go with something on the back wall & a system for the ceiling.
Don't forget though - you are planning sidewall bed boxes.

 

There's always the little tool boxes that fit inside the bed

 

I like my Swing Case but it fills up pretty fast. I like the fact that you can't see it unless you peek in the windows of my camper shell.

 

Were you able to buy this? When I try to apply the coupon it says it doesn't apply to that battery (or the Group 31 I want) and then I noticed this?
