You have a couple options. The ones that stand out to me are:

    ARB

    Auburn limited slip

I can tell you from first hand experience, the Tundra will do much better with either of those two options.

Did you take the Traction Control off? That helps a little so the brakes are not hindering you.

This was one of the only gripes I had with my 12' CM. If that would have been my last truck, a Limited Slip would have been installed.

I'm pretty sure 1st Gens have traction control too. It should be a button with a car with squiggly lines. If you have it, you need to turn off your nannies.

    Select-able locker up front (ARB)
    Full time locker out back

    Unless open bank account,
    Then select-able front and rear

On my 2000 LTD...back in the day (ahem)...my front dif spider gears went out without a sound or indication. The only thing I noticed was that my miles per tank went from 375-380 up to 430-440 per tank!! This went on for weeks until I tried 4WD. Took it to the shop and they drained the dif. CHUNKS of gear teeth fell out with the oil. After that, the front end bound up and the friction literally caused the front axle to weld to itself. (Note to those looking for "extended warranties"...the spider gears are NOT COVERED). Long story short, I went to pick n pull and purchased a 2001 front end and installed a Powertrax Autolock differential in the front. I also installed a similar Powertrax auto lock dif in the rear. Those things were AMAZEBALLS!!! For the next 4 years of ownership, that truck went places it had no business being (Rubicon, Sierra Nevada trails, MOAB, wheeling from CA to Maine). The lockers were quiet and fun to drive with. Not sure if they make them anymore, but it was a super easy install.

Addendum: the full set ran me about $450 back then. With these, I was able to TOW Another Tundra through a 8-9 Rated Jeep trail just south of Lake Tahoe. And those lockers had zero issues for the next 98k miles I had the truck.

What 8-9 rated trail did you take your Tundra through, and doing a recovery nonetheless?

I agree with others, a selectable locker is best for any street use. Towing, a selectable or limited slip is the only options. An auto locker or mechanical locker under load will break shit....with ease.

I personally run mechanical lockers in my off-road only rig due to:

-cost. ARB lockers are very expensive.
    - The trails I go on, selecting front, rear lockers, shifting transfer case, gears...etc. You get the point. It is just easier, I have full hydraulic steering, and can select front to rear drive with my transfer case.
    - no more maintenance with broken air lines, leaks, solenoid issues, pumps....etc.

It all depends on what you want and how you use your truck.

Was years ago...Deer Lake?? Deer creek?? Deer something. Surprised a bunch of gnarly looking Jeep guys out there. They looked At us as if we were nutz. 4 tundras and a couple Tacos from the NorCal group. Fun times.

    Edit: Deer Valley trail

The tundra I towed wasn't completely disabled, FTR. He blew out his front trying to inertia climb a rock face on the trail. Essentially he was 2wd...in reality 1 WD with the open rear dif. Made for a long trail...and ended up being at night as well by the time it was all said and done. When his front end went, it was like a shotgun blast.

Good to know. I may have to check this out in August. We are running the Rubicon and some trails all the way out and back.
Looks to be a moderate trail, but fun I'm sure. Even more impressive in Tacoma/Tundra trucks.
I get surprised all the time by Toyota trucks and where they can go. One of our club members has a 96' Tacoma, SAS and built very well. That little 4 cylinder truck just goes about everywhere he wants.

Just checking on the trail now. Looks like it's closed. Man that's bringing back some memories.

Thanks for the heads up. Another reason we are doing the Rubicon before it is shut down for good. Damn shame.
