To Skid or Not to Skid?

Absolutely! Skid plates are a simple necessity when it comes to overlanding and off-roading. The products we normally think about are the most popular such as rock sliders. However, riding on rocky trails, you have the potential to damage vital components, such as your lower control arms, shocks, gas tanks and similar undercarriage items. And nobody wants a significant unexpected expense.

Aluminum or Steel? That’s the question.

Aluminum: Aluminum and Steel Skid Plates technically do the same job, protect your vehicle from damaging the undercarriage. While Aluminum is the lighter option, it depends which trails you are running. If your off roading on simple trails and just need it as a precaution, Aluminum is the way to go.

Steel: While Steel Skid plates are heavier, they endure harsher environments, slide on rocks easier, and less expensive compared to Aluminum. If you’re not worried about added weight, and are looking for a durable long-lasting option, a steel skid plate is the way to go.

@ragofabrication, do you have any plans to produce a 38 gal tank skid for a gen 3 Tundra?

 

Is their an advantage in corrosion resistance between the two materials?

 

@ragofabrication Will you be releasing a rear shock skids in the very near future?

 

Aluminum is inherently corrosion resistant by nature. No real need to plate, paint or powder coat. Steel, on the other hand needs a plating, painting or powder coating for corrosion resistance. Steel, once scratched up is vulnerable, aluminum is not.

Why this over RCI?

 

A few inquiries from forum members but all I hear are crickets from @ragofabrication

 

They offer control arm skids for the 3rd gens. Doesn't look like anything else for us at the moment.

What they didn’t realize is that, unlike TacomaWorld that kicks up on the weekends, Tundras.com is all of us oldsters, well-employed and can afford Tundras, but post during M-F work hours. I’m sure going forward, she’ll know that after she lobs a grenade by posting a thread, she needs to hunker down for incoming return fire.
