This sounds funny - do you ever regret buying a full size truck?

I love my Tundra. Never looking back. I kept my 97 4Runner limited. I get average 13.5mpg on the tundra and about 15 mpg on the 4Runner. So as far as gas goes that’s negligible to me. Plus the back seat room of the 4Runner is much smaller than than my DC BACK ROOM. So definitely sticking with both. Now I’m thinking on what mods I can do to both. The Tundra is definitely the new family vehicle.

 

I miss my 1st Gen Tundra (2001) all the time. Growing family made me buy my 2019. If the 1st Gen had 4 doors, i’d still have it.

I only regret it when I try to find a parking spot at Trader Joe's. Apparently TJ's thought all CO folks live in Boulder and drive a Prius.

 

The DC back room is more spacious than I thought. It's actually bigger than my 3rd gen Tacoma DC.

 

My 1st gen is the perfect size. A bit bigger than a taco and V8 power. Not too big, not too small, highly capable. The only thing I don't like is the lack of aftermarket support. All the cool stuff comes out for 2nd and 3rd gens.

Before this I had a 2013 F150 supercrew, 6.5' box. Other than truck being a steaming pile of shit, it was like driving a VLCC. Not once did I need that large box either. Before the F1shitty was a 2011 GMC Sierra crew cab shortbox. Great truck, perfect sized box, and overall size wasn't bad at all.

 

Only when offroading. Some of the trails I get on get pretty tight and some I won't attempt because I know her fat ass won't fit. Other than that, no. Of course prior to this most my vehicles were full size too but they were older so I didnt care as much if they didnt "fit" on a trail I just scraped them through anyway. I won't do that to my tundra.

 

I was also able to get a few side-by-side photos before leaving the Tacoma behind. Bitter-sweet day....

Had 1997 4-Runner for 10 years, raised 2 kids in it, but wanted a truck again.
I've owned several in my lifetime.
Bought a 2005 DC, kept 10 years, loved it.
Then in 2014 after NTB ruined my front end I started shopping for another Tundra or Tacoma.

Toyota gave me 2 different loaners for 3 weeks while the 2005 was in their shop.
I drove a new Tacoma a week and a new Tundra for 2 weeks.
I had thought about downsizing to a Tacoma when I first started shopping.
They're too small and cramped after driving a Tundra for 10 years.
Bought the 2014 DC and hope to get 5 or 6 more years out of it..

So, no regrets at all.

Seeing as how my 2019 Tacoma killed my lower back with the awkward seating position, I have no ragrets about trading up into my cavernous, V8-powered Tundra

 

Only times I miss a mid size is at the gas pumps and in tight ass trails when my paint is scraping off the side of my truck

 

Driving anywhere in or around Downtown PDX.
Parking in PDX
Coffee place drive throughs that dont normally cater to working class folks with big damn trucks
and fill up days.
Other than that , its a pretty kick ass truck even though i complain about the little stuff (radio , CM sized bed). I have no plans to get rid of it. Probably give it to one of my sons .

I have owned a number of trucks, cars, SUV’s. Sometimes when I’m driving it I think to myself that this big truck is really not necessary. And the mileage sucks.But I thought long and hard about it when car shopping again and the pros definitely out weighed the cons. (Specifically for buying a tundra) Not any other make of a used truck. Originally wanted a taco, but could not find one I wanted in my price range, and actually I have never even been in one so I don’t know if I would have liked it, ha. Plus I feel much safer in my tundra. I love driving the thing.

 

Thats true if you have a backup camera. Anyone can hook up to a trailer in a single shot with the use of a camera but my 08 doesnt have that luxury and it can be hard to tell if i have 4 ft of space or 4 inches.

 

I have the same problem with backing up. The lines on my backup camera screen in 1 ft increments are amazing. (Sorry, not trying to rub it in.)

 

Have a 2016 4Runner along with my Tundra. When parking is going to be a challenge I drive the T4R, but that’s really the only time. My Tundra gets 14 mpg on average and the 4Runner gets 19.5 on average. I feel safer with my family in the Tundra, far more cabin space, and loads more torque just to name a few reasons. I also have confidence I can beat on my Tundra for 20 years and it won’t flinch which feels good. Gas and go friends.

 

Just this morning we had a situation where I needed to take 3 adults and 3 kids along in my DC - including 2 kids in car seats. So I had 3 in the front (bech seats) and 3 in the back. I couldn’t do that in my 4Runner or a CM. It actually wasn’t too bad fitting everyone in.

 

I went from my 2004 Tacoma to a second gen 2012. Then I went from my 2012 Tacoma to my 2016 tundra. I love my tundra but I sure do miss my first gen Tacoma. Unfortunately it was totaled. It held it's value too.

 

Why would backing into a parking space make any difference?

 

Physics
Backing in your rear doesnt move. But you can swing your front end a lot with the stering wheel.
Pulling into a space your rear follows you, so if trying to park between to cars, theres no room for error. If backing in, once the rear is in the middle there is more play with the front end to park straight.

 

My little '94 V6 was great on the trails. Nimble and easy to maneuver. And totally fun to go camping with as long as it's not more than two (small) people. I have more room now just in the two front seats vs that pre-taco's whole interior with those little jump seats in back and only two doors. My first gen Tundy kinda split the difference. 4 doors (two suicide) with much more room inside, in a 'compact' full size that was still quite nimble. It checked a lot of boxes without being 'BIG'. But now as I prepare to retire (yea, 5+ years away but who's counting) I plan on towing a trailer and the '19 checks a lot more boxes. I don't overstep what the truck can do when I hit the trails (I'll be visiting the suspension later this year) and have a much more capable truck for towing. Yea the little '94 got 13.5mpg or so city, the first gen Tundra got a little less than 13, and now it hovers just under 12mpg city in the '19, that difference isn't gonna kill me. This truck, the One Above willing, will go 15-20 years with me (I did 17 on the first gen and it was still going strong) and take me where I plan on going as I see this great country. The closest I ever came to a regret, is parking in lots that are clearly laid out for cars, and parking structures that are too low.

 

There is nothing I miss going to full size. Went from a Nissan Hard body, to Silverado, to a Trailblazer to my Tundra. I'm 6'3" and love the space and power of the full size.

 

No.... But the mpg does suck!!!
