Unexplained loud "POP!" in the cab!

Taking my kids to school this morning (45mph, smooth road) when in the cab we heard a very loud "pop"! It sounded like a gunshot, or a balloon popping only 3x louder.
No tire blew, no light came on. To my knowledge nothing hit the vehicle from the outside. No speakers seemed to have blown (the radio was on). I am totally baffled. If it weren't for my kids also hearing it (and being subsequently terrified) and my ears literally ringing, I would have thought I was crazy.

Any ideas? suggestions? Things to check for?

When I’ve had this happen it’s typically something that kicked up off the road and bounced off the windshield

Something like this happened to me a couple weeks ago and it came from the suspension. I felt it when it happened and it was a very loud bang. Not sure what it was exactly. Never happened to me with any other vehicle. Im all stock suspension fwiw

Thanks guys - have considered or checked all of those options and nothing there to speak of.

No cars near us and windows and windshield are intact. It sounded like a short barreled 25acp or 300 BlkOut going off in the cab

I do think I'll swing by my local shop or dealer and have them just take a glance underneath. Nothing seems off with the drive or suspension to me.. but you never know. I'm running mid-setting 5100's in the font.

only time I’ve ever had that kind of sound was when my battery blew up years ago on an old Ford Explorer Sport. I had driven it for awhile and stopped for a quick meal at McDonalds. Started it back up and BANG! It was like a 12 gauge going off in the truck. Scared the crap out of me... no damage to the truck. I was able to drive it to a NAPA store and got a new battery. Ever since I’ve always opened the hood and let it breathe awhile to dissipate any fumes. And I never use the negative terminal when I jump anything... lots of energy!

I’ve heard of spare tires blowing if it’s oversized and the exhaust is melting it:monocle: grasping here for ideas

I had that happen several years ago on a 2007 after transitioning out of 4 wheel drive.

I too thought it was a gun shot due to the incredible loud percussion which emanated throughout the cab. It was so loud/concerning that I pulled over and inspected the exterior of the truck for damage. Nothing found at the time but several weeks later the source raised it's ugly head and when my right front wheel spline sheared, locked-up and then needless to say all hell broke lose.

I hope this is not tdn's issue nor do I imply, only sharing a very familiar similar circumstance and outcome.

You could have run over something- I've been in a car and drove a truck when I ran over both a full and empty waterbottle and the sound it sends inside the cap makes you feel like a tire popped or a gun went off.

Make sure to check all steering components, check radio incase you got some weird signal feedback that made a pop resonate throughout the cab.
And maybe a rock or something jumped up and just hit the front or rear drive shaft or undercarriage of your truck at 45mph, anything like that could very likely give a loud pop inside.

Were you driving in 2wd or 4wd? Not that it would matter to much but could help others diagnose

Just for laughs. Bag of chips maybe? We had one of them blow up in the back seat while topping the great divide in Colorado on Loveland pass. Sounded pretty much the same. Thought we took a rock from the mountain off the top of the cab. Pretty comical when I found the bag blown open in the back seat.
On a more serious note, get under the truck and look for a dent or mark from a stone or similar, check leaf springs, and as mentioned spare tire and windshield. Also check the windshield pillars. I took a stone right at the edge of the windshield 1/4 more and it would have been the pillar. It took a week for the crack to form.

    Kid with a snowball maybe?

I was alone on the freeway once and giant rock came out of nowhere and smacked the windshield. It sounded like a gunshot but it didn’t break. There was NOBODY around. It was weird.

Maybe a bird had previously swallowed the rock and upon passing... the rock fell from the sky and hit your windshield.

I think I’ve had that happen before. Sounds like a plastic water bottle popping. Never found out where it came from. Mine wasn’t too loud though.

Finally got the truck in for a thorough inspection.
The mechanic found nothing wrong or broken!
Their best idea was some thick ice that was built up between the cab and bed might have cracked or popped... I say maybe but it sure didn’t sound like that to me. But who knows.
The mystery continues. But, thankful nothing major is wrong
