So I have a 2020 with factory push button start and we all know the engine shuts off when you open the door. Ok so first off to open the door the key has to be within a certain proximity, I can remote start my truck in the house but if I leave my key inside I can't open the "smart" door. With that said Toyota claims that the engine shutoff is a theft prevention but I was under the assumption that the vehicle can only be so far from the key fob while running. Am I correct? Or can I remote start my truck in the house and unlock the door inside then hop in and drive off leaving my fob on the kitchen table?

Remote start kills when door gets opened. But if u start the truck regular u can get out, leave ur keys inside and drive off and the truck will stay on.

If I got in the truck and went down the road and it died I'd have to leave the truck on the side of the road and walk back to the key then walk back to the truck, unless it only goes a few feet before dieing.

I don’t think truck is gonna die. I’ll give u a real life example lol

so we have a Honda Odyssey with push start. Wife got in started the van, had to get out as she forgot something inside the house. Got what she needed and left( keys are still at home as she used them to unlock home) gets to the mall, turns off van, looks for keys to lock the car and she doesn’t have them. Guess what she can’t turn on car either now lol. I think push button is cool and all but after ur first situation it sucks. Keep in mind when u it does beep and alert u on dashboard for a couple seconds that the key isn’t inside the vehicle.

Yea it beeps when I get out with key in pocket. Apparently there is a Toyota app to where you can start, lock, unlock, etc. form anywhere I believe it's free for a few months then costs but I'd bet if I left home without the key and started with the app the engine would shut off just like the remote start.

Yes the app is called "toyota". However, by agreeing to the term and conditions all your driving data is monitored/collected.....location, gps destinations and driving behavior. This data is also used for trying to sell you auto insurance based on your driving patterns.

Now it does also have some handy features. You have the ability to check fuel tank levels and tire psi. It will also notify you of ajar doors or when a door is opened. I am sure there are many other handy/novelty features. But the real problem is they collect your data......

Sounds like a lot of walking. Take the battery out of the fob and go down the road, truck stops put battery in fob.
