JBL sounds system EQ settings? Always sounds meh.

Has anyone found decent EQ settings for the factory JBL sound system? No matter what I set mine to it always sounds muddled.....sound quality from this system is mediocre at best. I realize that.

 

The one thing that blows on the Tundra. No fix except to replace all or some of the components. Many threads on here discussing the topic. Many replace all components, some have kept their Head Unit with additional components.

Yeah figured. Toyota really sucks at sounds systems.

 

From what I hear, most of the other models do not suck near as bad, may actually be tolerable. Toyota must think full size trucks do not need them.

I just finished a install of equipment from James in my wife’s 1794. I kept the oem head unit and went with the Hertz component door speakers, the JL Audio 900/5 amp, the Rockford Maestro interface, and the JL Audio subs in the box from James. Any glitches in installation were easily and quickly handled by James. His customer service is excellent. I’ve had some Mark Levinson systems in a few Lexus vehicles that I thought sounded great. This system, in my opinion sounds better. I highly recommend giving James a shout. Life’s too short to live with factory JBL.

 

My wife's 2015 Avalon sounds decent.....Tundra not so much. Going to visit James soon I hope.

 

Its a subjective thing, but for me there is no way to EQ with just 3 frequency bands to adjust. Especially when the factory HU attenuates certain frequencies as the volume increases.

 

I am very interested in this exact upgrade, which Hertz components did you go with in the front and back - what is your thoughts on the Hertz speaker quality? Did you leave in you stock JBL amp or did that come out with the new system? Thanks

 

Sorry about the slow reply. I kept the OEM head unit. The front doors have Hertz Mille Pro 6.5. The rear doors have Hertz Cento Pro 6.5. The amp is a JL Audio 900/5. The subs are JL Audio in the enclosure from James. The interface is a DSL1 from Rockford Fosgate. All purchased from James. He preprogrammed the DSL1 for me. He will also help with any glitches you might have during installation. I had a great experience in dealing with him. I had some trepidation about doing the install, but in the end it wasn’t that bad. I recommend getting a car stereo installation tool kit. Basically hard plastic pry bars. The first door will take 3x the time the others will. You will learn as you go. The Hertz speakers seem to be quality units. I installed this all in my wife’s 1794. She Loves it!

 

Sorry, forgot the sound deadening. 4 rolls of Sound Shield. Makes a huge difference, even with the stereo off. The only thing not included from James is extra wire for wiring the speakers/crossovers in the doors. I bought a 100ft roll of both red and black 16ga. wire.
