DETROIT -- Toyota is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles in the U.S. because the fuel pumps can fail and cause engines to stall. That can increase the risk of a crash.

The recall covers certain 2018 and 2019 Lexus LS 500, LC 500, RC 350, RC 300, GS 350, IS 300, ES 350, LX 570, GX 460, and RX 350 models. Also included are certain 2018 and 2019 Toyota 4Runner, Camry, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, and Tundra models. Some 2019 models also are affected including the Avalon and Corolla.

Toyota is still developing repairs. Owners will be notified by mail in mid-March.

I wonder if this is all 2018/2019 Tundras or just the ones with flex engines.

Funny, my wife got a notice in the mail couple weeks ago for her 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a recall to fix previous recall for fuel pump relay (same stalling issue while driving). Notice specifically stated the fix to fix the last recall not available yet.

I wonder about the 2020's. Given I just bought one... So long as it's covered I'm not concerned. Just schedule it with regular service.

So now it the time to run your tanks dry and see just how much range you have. But get the notice first. Lol

I might not even get it done on my 2019 a it’s a lease and will be gone in 19 months anyway.

We had a Jeep for a few years. There was a recall where the cpu would think the vehicle was not in park at times, causing it not to start. My wife used to work until midnight in a shady area. At 4’7” 105lbs that wasn’t ok with me. Chrysler had the parts on backorder and told us they have no idea when it would be in. I traded it the following week for her Highlander (now a Camry)

Gotta love the wording of “certain models”. 700k vehicles over all of those models is a small percentage though. Wouldn’t be too overly concerned.

They are aware of an issue and want to fix it. Cant fault them for that. As long as it is repaired and I don't have to pay for it years down the road I am all set.

I did have the cam tower leak on both sides so seeing my brand new engine split in half for a week was not easy. Got my frustrations out early!

So, what is the issue with the pump?
I have a hard time believing my fuel pump that stays submerged in 8 gallons of fuel even when my gauge says the tank is empty would burn out

It’s ironic to me because the justification I used for a new truck was the impending degradation in the reliability of my Silverado after it clicked 180k. Specifically it was nightmares of a fuel pump leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere......

If it makes you feel better, try to remember the last time you have seen a Tundra on a flatbed

We're taking our 2019 (4K miles) 4-wheeling in about 2 weeks in Death Valley (hope that's not a portent?). I'll post IF we have any problems. We'll attempt to keep the tank pretty full, but gas in DV is scarce and expensive.

I am really hoping this only affected flex models. My 18 is at almost 35k and so far no issues (sound of wood being knocked)

I wonder if they cheapened the ‘19s and ‘20s up beyond the missing transmission cooler and changed the fuel pump design too? Hopefully not and it’s just a bad batch.

I have 19K on my 2018 Tundra. Over that span I've had 3 seperate "hard Starts" which I found very odd. I'm thinking that my rig is probably one of the affected units.

I haven't seen any posts here about the 4 recalls on the 2019 GMs or the dozen recalls on the 2017 F150s...

Only those with a 17' or older. But toyota will fix these issues no questions asked that's why we all love our trucks.

Unlikely that's the direct cause imo, but they could have changed pump suppliers trying to reduce costs. GM went through a similar deal on 2005 Corvettes. They said you had to use top-tier gasoline, blah, blah. In the end, it was replacing the fuel pumps with redesigned version that worked. You would think everyone in the business would know this by now.

Don't give Toyota too much credit for seeing a problem and quickly responding: The same government that put alcohol in our gasoline in the first place, is the government that will likely hammer Toyota if they don't quickly fix the problem biting consumers in the butt. Libertarian View: Least government is the best government.
