Crewmax vs. Double cab

Crewmax the 1/2ft of bed you lose is hardly noticeable...….

 

I like the double cab. More bed space, way more interior storage somehow than the CM I've been in, higher tow rating, back seat still has more room than anything else I or my friends own. So you give up some necessary passenger space in a CM, for more storage and performance in every other aspect. Personally I don't care for the roll down rear window either. My 4Runners and Landcruisers have had it, my dad's 1st gen Tundra has it, and they rarely if ever get used so I couldn't care less for that.

 

Crewmax, took dog to trip to Austin with his crate in back area. 80 lb dog. Worked great, and the crate fit through the rear doors. With a DC not happening...

 

Counted 7 Double Cabs and 6 CrewMax today. Double cab is still plenty large enough to ride comfortably. It's cab is still larger than a Tacoma DC.

 

On Saturday I counted 5 Double Cabs to 2 CrewMax. strong win for double cabs.

I have to add, I still think the Double Cab is the superior truck. The Cab is large enough for a family, the bed is larger, length stays the same while also being a lighter vehicle with superior payload, towing and MPGs. All around, I believe this is a more versatile truck while being cheaper to purchase and is all around a better value.

I traded my DC in for a CM.

The DC rear seat (2nd Gen SR5) is at a bad angle (back rest doesn't/can't lean back) and is non-adjustable for people, so anything more than a 10 min drive is no bueno. Especially with 2 kids and a straight 19-23 hour drive one way to UT, WY, ID and MT 2-3 times per year (more now). Once my daughter hit 6' tall there really wasn't a choice.

 

Payload and towing capacity is NIL for 2020. 70lbs more haul capacity and 100lbs tow capacity and you only get on engine option and that's the 5.7L so what superior mileage?

 

I make a trip to the mountains here in CO for snowboarding at least once a week... go CrewMax if you can... it’s like a small bedroom in the backseat very comfortable, just like she says... a few extra inches is always a plus.

 

I do inspections all day. Usually only me in my CM. But all my equipment, zip levels, tool bag, briefcase and laptop fit on the floor behind my truck. The levels are affected by temperature so they must be in a controlled environments to work properly. Coats hanging. So I can open either door and see everything and grab just what I need. Nothing stacked. I have 2 CMs, one is a heavy work truck, we can put enough concrete piers or blocks in the rear and haul a 5 man crew all over North Texas. If we are pulling a trailer we switch to Dodge 3500 dually's. My other truck is a pavement princess, and I use it when I'm out doing collections or finaling a job. It's got a Dirty Deeds Exhaust and you will know when I pull up. And I'll remote start it whole I'm rolling up equipment, it cuts down on the time I'm on site by 5-10 minutes per inspection. And the truck states Boss loudly... I'm not young anymore, bad knees and hips from mx days, so if I'm going to ever be in the back seat and not driving I want to be just as comfortable as if I'm up front. I bought the Tundras for 3 reasons. Reliability, low maintence costs, and cab size. When your in it, no one's touching elbows. Similar to a hummer, you've got 25% cab space and it's yours. New Ram 3500 is nice, but passenger loses about 35% of floorboard space for tyranny. Very unconfotable after 2 hours. DC are seen on all our jobstes. And they work well for the trim guys, framers, the subs that need to haul longer materials and don't have a crew. But for me, and my type of busines, there's only 2 type of trucks we buy, Tundra Crewmax and Ram 3500 dually's with a Cummins diesel. We cycled through 3 Ford F350's & 250's that were in the shop constantly. Ford and Chevy are disposable trucks. 100k and look the hell out.

 

Every time a I see a cm, I hand them my lunch box, "here can you haul this for me" lmao..jk guys..I have a dc with the steering column shift, move that extra seat.

Was a tough day yesterday with CrewMax taking an early lead, but slowly and surely Double Cabs caught up yesterday. Final count was 22 Double Cabs and 17 CrewMax.

With all due respect. The huge extra back seat is really the only extra nice thing I hear about the CrewMax.

 

Extra space for the crewmax and about an extra foot of bed space for the double cab. Tow capacity and Payload are basically the same between the 2wd versions. 100 lbs more towing for double cab and 70 lbs more Payload capacity for double cab over crewmax. So if someone tries to say double cab over crewmax because better towing and Payload is full of it.

 

No word from the OP on what he bought? He only mentioned the teenagers so I'm assuming cab space is more important than bed space.
I've owned both cabs and like both. I'm 6'7" with 2 kids under 7. I plan on keeping my 2017 CM until the kids are out of the house. Knowing all of the camping and road trips in our future plus my kids will probably on the taller side, CM was the only way for us.

 

Unless you have a very specific need for the extra foot of bedspace I don’t know why anyone with kids would buy a double cab. I wish i had the crew max two times per day minimum

 

Don't forget the sliding rear window that makes the CM like a convertible when sunroof and all 5 windows are down...

 

My girl says if she's going dirt roading she wants the cm backseat and the extra leg room for maneuvering, case closed...

 

I have 2 boys. And the whole family decided we like the DC better. Wife likes the looks of the DC, I like the bed on the DC, the boys love the whole truck. The whole family tried out both models when buying a Tundra. After 1/2 a year of being in a DC the family still likes the DC more.

I had the same daily wishes with my DC, here's to hoping there is a CM in your near future.

 

Except x3 as many people buy DC Tacomas For your same reason. Yet the DC Tundra which is more spacious than a DC Taco is still not enough for some people.

 

I’ve thought about this many times. I feel like the door opening in the rear of the taco is bigger than the tundra dc. I do need to compare the rear seat angle

 

There are mixed reviews on the Tundra DC rear door for some reason (handle looks funny, door too small, etc.) but the proof is in the writing. Tundra DC is wider and has more leg and headroom than the DC Taco. Essentially the Tundra DC is like a small crew cab, but still larger than the Taco Crewcab and yet it is still technically an extended cab.

 

Thank you for reminding me of this. I do need to remember the measurements.

At least my kids are both girls so i likely wont have these monster 6’4 sons like some posts!


My brother in law has the DC taco, gen 2. I think his rear door opens in a way that makes it easier to get in and out of his backseat, but yes the truck is smaller

 

Well, our kids are grown and gone so no regular back seat passengers. Also, I need the bed space for hauling things for our small farm (hay, lumber, etc.). So, DC all the way for me (us). Besides, my wife has a 2017 Sequoia so if we need to carry a group of passengers, we take her car.

 

CM reminds me of something...just can't put my finger on it.

I had 2 dc’s .2008 and 2014 .While it had enough room at the time for my family needs, whenever i saw a crewmax driving i was always thinking to myself man those rear doors look so nice i wish my dc was like that too and man that rear window and sunroof make the truck look so open and i wish i can crank my music up and roll down all the windows and sunroof!
Now i have a CrewMax as my third tundra and it makes me smile everytime I start driving it.I never had that many compliments from passengers about leg room like i do from this Tundra.
Just like others pointed out you can add a bed extender to make up for that lost less than a foot of bed space but you cant extend your cab room

 

My son is 6'-3". He lives in another part of the country and hadn't had a chance to sit in the back of my CM until his visit a couple of weeks back. He couldn't believe how much room he had.

 

Test drove the double cab and hopped in the back just to get an idea for how it felt. I'm 6 ft. tall and it didn't seem too bad for riding around town. As soon as I test drove the crew max I was sold...game changer for my 3 kids too.
