Toyota Acknowledges Defects on My 2019 Tundra, but Refuses to Fix Them

I have a loaded 2019 Tundra Platinum 4WD purchased from Lonestar Toyota in Lewisville, TX that I originally loved until I discovered 3 defects that Toyota service folks see and acknowledge but Toyota wont fix under warranty because they call them "normal." Never had a Toyota, but due to their BS and not standing behind their products - it will be the last. Have fought with the Lonestar Lewisville Service department and also had a case open through the National Toyota Customer Experience Center since October last year. Both are worthless. They see and acknowledge the issues but wont fix them.

#1. Bed is visually uneven when view from the rear. Measuring the floor to the fender lip proves 7/8" difference from left to right. Toyota response "Many are uneven so it is not warrantable."

#2. 20-30 small paint specks that when clean and polished can be seen and even felt with fingernail. Toyota response "Spots are visible but not not out of spec so not warrantable." When I ask what spec is, no one has an answer.

#3 Grill molding just below the hood pops loose and shows an uneven bulge. You can pop in back down but then pops loose again after first bump in the road. Toyota response "We checked brand new ones in parts inventory and they all do that so we wont replace it under warranty."

Great company, right??? Not sure what else to do. Thinking about going over to the North America HQ in Plano and pushing the issues live there with whomever I can get in front of. Other suggestions welcome.

I would go above the dealers head as it seems they don’t want to cooperate.

Sorry to hear that, but these issues are not deal breakers for a truck that will be there for you 250,000 miles later.

At this point another dealership would be your best chance at any help. There are quite a few threads on hood bulge pop, crooked beds and paint flaws... Maybe some DYI fixes and a case of beer?

1 and 3 are normal. 2 is understandable since Toyota cheaper out on paint but without pictures I can't really tell how bad it might be.

Having the right approach when discussing matters like these with the dealer can go a long way in getting what you want.

Your best bet is to dump the Toyota brand. Maybe Ford or Chevy would be better.

Unfortunately I don't think this is a bad call on Toyota's part, but a bad call by what seems to be a crappy dealer. As others have stated, contact Toyota directly yourself and/or different dealer. Make sure you're provided a case number.

Responding to each of your concerns:

    1. You’re being unreasonable.

    2. You’re being irrational.

    3. See 1 & 2.

Seriously though, stop worrying. It’s a mass produced truck, not a work of art. Drive it, beat it up, enjoy it and trade it in when you’re ready to got something new and then realize how much you LOVE the class leading resale.

I can't believe how many here tell the OP that those issues are normal. I have never had a problem like this with a new truck, not even with my 2018 Tundra.

    OP,

You might want to read through your warranty booklet. I don't know about Toyota (sold my 18 Tundra) but Ford (F-150) clearly states that body alignment issues are covered, only for the first 12 month though.

Toyota already told him these issues were within tolerances or normal. Some paint imperfection you can see when the truck is polished perfectly? The bed lean? A piece of mounding or trim that’s pushed out ever so slightly? I just think most of us have better things to worry about, and they aren’t defects per se they’re normal according to Toyota. Hopefully the OP can post some pics so we can see what he’s worried about. As another poster said tho: if you want closer to perfection, get a Lexus LS500.

Dude paid probably >$50k for his truck, he should not have to accept issues like this.

It’s hard to tell how “bad” the issues are without pics. Assuming he’s working with the selling dealer who apparently doesn’t want his business anymore. I’d get a 2nd opinion at another dealer to compare.

I'm sorry you are disappointed with your truck. Within reason a new vehicle should be very close to issue free. Is that Toyota branch you contacted Toyota N.A.?

    Did you reach them here:
The 1-800 toll free number for Toyota customer relations is 1-800-331-4331. A live person is available Monday-Friday from 5:00am to 6:00pm Pacific Time and Saturday from 7:00am to 4:00pm Pacific Time.

If not call them, create a case, explain your situation calmly and courteously and I bet you will get a resolution.

Our 2007 Camry hybrid $5k battery died just outside warranty & miles. Toyota good willed the parts, I paid 500 labor.

I am certain if you are diligent and treat the person(s) with respect they will help you.

How many truck beds out of the millions of pickups being sold are perfectly level and square? Probably very few

After reading the Yelp review on this dealership, it sounds like they have been changing leadership/management like one would change underpants. Many reviews cite shady practices and obvious staff turnover.
    https://m.yelp.com/biz/lone-star-toyota-of-lewisville-lewisville

Steve, give up on that dealership and take your complaints to the next level(s).

Before you do, sit back, take a deep breath, sip a coke, and put on your Mr. Friendly.

Nothing repels people like rabid anger. They’ll just want to get away from you.

Steve I suggest you trade your Tundra in on a Porsche and or possibly a Corvette and keep the whining for perfection.

    I get it man,
you were blinded by the initial excitement and that dealer fresh detail. When that wears off you start to notice the little details. If my sr5 crewmax had issues like that I wouldn’t care. However the 1794 is $$$ compared to the sr5. I honestly as petty as it sounds Would be pissed off too.

Tundra lean, rail dust, and bad parts. Tundra lean they can’t fix and shouldn’t have too. Rail dust just ask them to clay bar and buff on your next service. For the last I would try asking them after it’s one issue not 3. Or just find another service department. Posts like this make me appreciate my local dealer so much more as I’ve never had an issue. My rail dust issue the sales person was more upset then me and she had me bring it in. Gave me a 4Runner for the day and had my truck detailed in and out. Mind you my truck was a transfer so they never really had a chance to look at it.

I would be upset too; not because they didn’t “fix” the issues but because they blew him off like it was nothing. The optics are they got my money and there isn’t anything they have to do to fix the issues. Known or not, I would at least want a fix to the piece of molding popping out after going over a bump. Maybe if the dealership offered a full clay bar detail even if it didn’t fix the paint imperfections. It goes a long way to offer SOMETHING. The brand is great in my opinion; certain dealerships suck. Take it to another, but I would imagine they would search your vin and find the case number with no remedy. It’s up to a dealership to be accommodating at this point.

I agree with being frustrated. But, I spend a lot of time in my service department. I’m in contract maintenance and our vehicles have to get serviced. Being POS fords it seems like I’m always taking one in. I’ve watched interactions with the service department and they definitely try harder to please when the customer isn’t freaking out on them. It isn’t their fault. They try to help even with a mad customer but think honey vs vinegar.
