TRD Pro Wheels?

Are the TRD Pro Wheels and the TRD Package Wheels the same but the package wheels have some alum showing? See attached Pics

 

Yes same but the center caps are also different

Hey Larry. Looks like you have the answer now, but if you look at my build thread, I bought the regular trd machined surface wheels off Craigslist and had them powder coated at $80.00 ea. Good luck with everything.

 

Thanks Lenny, I think that is what I will do. Maybe going to a gunmetal color or something different.

 

If you do the gunmetal color, I'd love to see it! It's something I've been thinking about. Seems like you can buy black, chrome or a combination of black/milled and not much else.

 

Gunmetal would definitely look good but what would you do with the center cap?

 

I thought metal had to be magnetic to be powder coated... my TRD wheels don't hold a magnet...

 

I think that's chrome.

 

Good point, hadn't thought of that. I guess they'd need to be painted too, same color, different material.

 

Powder coatin g is just another form of painting. The wheels are aluminum and are powder coated well.

I'm not sure. Maybe I can find some paint that is close to the Powder coat. I'll go by the powder coat place next week and see the colors. They have a deal where you drop off the vehicle in the morning and the remove the tires, powder coat them, put the tires back on, balance them and you get the vehicle back that afternoon. If I decode to go this route, I'll do it when I buy bigger tires and work out the timing.

 

OK, time to make up my mind. I'm a old guy that wants a truck that is different from the crowd. But, no more need to be the biggest or baddest. I Have a 2017 SR5 CM with TRD Package in white. I'm trying to keep the stock suspension geometry but bigger tires and a 5100 leveling. So I'm thinking powder coated TRD Package wheels to be a but different from stock or TRD Pro. BFG KO2 275/70R18 tires. Today I looked at the tires and put them up next to my stock tires and think they will do fine for me. I also looked at the powder coat colors (to many to choose from) and I'm found a couple that I'm leaning towards. I was originally thinking "Gunmetal" but I think that is to light. I'm liking "Steel Grey" (a bit lighter that black) or "Titanium Silver" (a bit darker that gunmetal). I'm liking gloss on the finish also. I'm open for input. I have other wants but will take it a step at a time.

 

If you paint the center caps, the chrome Toyota emblem on the TRD Off Road wheels can be removed for painting and put back on. But on the TRD Pro caps, the entire center circle comes off, not just the red TRD letters.

 

They have a paint that matches the powder coat, I thinking of painting over the Toyota emblem. They will powder coat the lug nuts also.

 

Mine are a dark gray and I left the center cap black with the chrome emblem. Kinda goes well with the chrome lugs if you choose to keep those in the factory color. I think it's a good color combo with the white truck.

I like your trucks stance, what did you do to achieve that? How is the ride? Are those 18" wheels?

 

Thanks, that looks great Lenny. I read your build and you have done some amazing things. I volunteer with a off road racing team and all the trucks have exhaust through the body like yours. Very cool. I appreciate the wheel pics and now am wondering about leaving the caps black?

 

Thanks for the comments. Yes those are the OEM TRD wheels that I powder coated. I have a Billy 5100 @ top setting up front and stock shock in the rear. I actually lowered the rear about an 1-1/4" by removing a leaf. The ride is nice up front and softer in the rear with that leaf removed. Payload capacity is hurt some, but I still have the OEM overload and have added homemade airbag mounts out-board of the frame. Sits higher in the front, but that's the look I was going after. If you look at my build thread it shows some of the mods I've done. Good luck with everything.

 

Wheel spacers?

 

No wheel spacers. I kinda like the tucked look and easier on the suspension components, ball joints etc.

 

Maybe it's the lack of the front bumper that makes it look like the wheels sit more flush along with the larger tires. Either way your truck looks good. I like it a lot. Makes me want to powder coat my wheels.

 

That's what's great about powder coat. So many colors to personalize your truck.

 

This is the powder coat outcome. I did do the lug nuts and found a paint that comes close to the powder coat.

 

Larry your truck looks great! I've been to Primo Powdercoating (assuming thats where u went) for a BMW I had a few years ago. Dan is great isnt he? I do like your gumetal. I have the 15 CM Limited and was thinking about getting your wheels and either powdercoating it GM or Black. Can you take a photo of the truck from the side as well? Did you end up getting the 5100's for the front? I did and love em. Im also just going for the modified stock look. Just clean.
