I have a 2017 TRD Pro Tundra with 37k miles on it. Yes it is just barely out of warranty. never taken the truck off roading and the rear left strut has already blown out. How is this even possible? Shouldn’t they last way longer?

The truck does have +3 rear shackles from coach builder that we’re installed a year ago and 295/70/18 Ridge Grapplers on it.

Is there some alternative strut I can buy that is comparable in performance but less money than an OEM TRD Pro Strut. I’m assuming if I switch brands on the rear left strut I also need to replace the rear right?

After doing some searching it seems like a lot of people go with the Billstein 5160s in the rear. can I do those in rear but leave TRD Pro in the front?

please let me know what your thoughts are and what I need to consider. I’m just going to buy the struts and take them to my local mechanic so need to tell him what to do and don’t want to end up having him install something that screws up the truck because I didn’t know what I was buying/doing. LOL

    Welcome.

I added the TRO Pro suspension to my 2017 Limited. You can definitely keep the fronts and just replace the rear. You will want to change both rears if you go with something different. Others will chime in with their setups - I only have experience with my factory Bilsteins that came on the truck and the Pro Suspension that was added after. The Pro setup rides sooo much better than what I took off, but those were just the cheaper Bilstein 4600's I believe that Toyota uses.

I believe the 2017 Pro had Bilsteins. Might want to try Fox. My guess is the raise in suspension caused the shock to perform in a section of the shock it was not designed to. Maybe over travel?

You might could complain to Bilstein.

I would contact Bilstein and see what warranty they can give you for such an expensive shock. If you go with the 5160 in the rear is a down grade so I think you will notice ride quality. I have the 6112s and 5160 but Ii have heard the ride on the pros is much better than any of the other Tundras. You can also ask your dealer to do a one time good will and help you out dont hurt to ask

Ok thx for the reply. Now I’m wondering if it makes sense for me to bite the bullet and buy one OEM TRD strut from Toyota or if I should just replace both in the rear with something like the billsteins 5160. Will the 5160 keep the truck at the same height with my coach builder +3 shackles? Should I be looking at a different option?

The rear shocks wont give any additional lift or drop

The stock Bilstein, albeit the pro version are not made to be used in an extended application.

And is that why my strut blew out? Because I put those shackles on?

Quite possibly. You over extended them.
Bilstein 5160s would be a better option in the rear.

I have a 17 pro with +3 coachbuilder shackles and 295/70s. I off road and tow a lot, I also use airbags when towing and I have zero problems. Maybe it was just a fluke. I think there are a lot of pros running the same set up.

I would not downgrade for sure:spending:

Maybe, but I'd extend the shocks if it was me. Just to avoid the possibility.

Maybe @Coachbuilder1 can chime in his TRDPro kit comes with +3 and recommends 295/70s.

You can find them in various lengths. They'll definitely get you closer. I'm not blaming over-travel just making the point that the shock was designed to operate within a certain degree of travel. You're changing this by adding the shackle.
