Have 2004 Tundra SR5 w/4.7 L 2 wd Auto trans.Truck has 161,000 miles. Have had trans serviced per manual by Toyota. Vehicle has towed boat/trailer(3300 lbs) for about 40 % of its mileage. Seems transmission takes longer to shift into gears.Have towing package and have used tow setting (no overdrive )when driving in city.Is this indication transmission is getting tired?(maybe clutch/torque converter wear). May be getting Travel trailer (3400 lbs) and wonder if this may create reliability issue particularly if going through mountain areas. will Have my excellent mechanic give his opinion with road test.Wanted to get others experiences with their trucks that tow with this kind of mileage. Also anyone that has bought Transmission from Jasper`s THX

We've seen original transmissions go a lot, lot longer than 161,000. I really haven't seen that many members report having to replace the transmission. Being an 04, you still have the 4 speed auto. If you have basic hand tools you can do a drain+fill on the transmission in less than 30 minutes. It's extremely easy. I would start there before I gave up on it. I know you said it's been serviced but it can't hurt to try again.

greetings, I used a product called auto rx in my 2002 tundra when I was experiencing some hard shifts. It helped a lot. Here is a link to there website:

The 2002 manual specs the incorrect fluid amount to be added on a drain and fill. Toy Spec says 2.1 quarts, but the reality is about 5 quarts.

How is your fluid level looking right now? 2002 needs to be checked hot with engine running.

Since you tow you know your service intervals need to be more frequent to to ‘heavy service’.

I’d do a drain and fill and make sure the fluid level is proper before getting worried.

2002 I use DEX/ Merc by Valvoline. Check your manual and fluid level and report back. Probably needs fresh fluid freshness. I’d do a couple drain and fills if you experience success after first refill. Total system holds about 12 quarts?
