UPDATE *questions answered* Has anyone installed a Passive keyless entry? I have some questions

Hey everyone, those that have seen my build thread know that I am trying to modernize my 2008 Sequoia. One of the next upgrades I am looking at is a PKE from

EASYGUARD EC002-V0 PKE Passive keyless Entry car Alarm System auto Start Push Start Button NFC Lock Unlock Backup keyless go dc12v

Easyguard. Has anyone successfully installed one of these units? Any thoughts? Some more specific questions also:
1. When walking away and the hatch is closing or a door isn’t shut yet, will it lock the truck or just ring (the sound when a door is left open and you try to lock it). If the latter, will it attempt to re-lock again once the opposing door is secure?

2. When approaching and the unit unlocks, do the puddle lights (lights under mirrors) come on like when you unlock it with the factory remote? If not, do they come on if you press the unlock button on the remote?

3. Does the auto locking/unlocking activate/deactivate the factory alarm which beeps when locked/unlocked?

Basically, these questions have to do with the level of integration of the PKE to the factory remote. I'm hoping that the PKE retains all of the factory alarm features. Thanks in advance for your input!

 

good day just seen your post, i have a similar model made by cardot. i also am curious as to the install. i just wanted to know how you made out if you made the purchase and had it installed.

 

I haven't installed it yet, still awaiting it's arrival from china. I'll keep you posted.

Here are the answers to my original questions.

If the latter, will it attempt to re-lock again once the opposing door is secure? It will attempt to lock and will sound the horn notifying you of an open door. If that door is then closed (say, by your child) the system will attempt to lock again after a set interval. Seems to work pretty good.

2. When approaching and the unit unlocks, do the puddle lights (lights under mirrors) come on like when you unlock it with the factory remote? If not, do they come on if you press the unlock button on the remote? No puddle lights, but the dome lights come on....next you, wiring the puddle lights to the dome light

3. Does the auto locking/unlocking activate/deactivate the factory alarm which beeps when locked/unlocked? Yes

 

How was the install?

do you know if this would work in concert with fortin remote start?

 

I'm not sure if it would work with the fortin since mine is stock. Here is a great writeup done by a member on tundrasolutions HERE. The install was pretty straight forward and the outcome is MUCH better than I anticipated! It feels and looks OEM.

Wow very cool, and reasonably priced. Couple questions out of pure curiosity:

What did you do about the tumbler in the steering column? Just leave it?

How does it unlock the steering wheel?

I see you placed the button where the coin tray was, good spot. Does it look easy to place on any flat surface?

If new Sequoias are keyless, maybe the blank steering column shroud will fit?

 

What did you do about the tumbler in the steering column? Just leave it? I left it since I tapped in to each ignition wire as opposed to disconnecting them...this way I can still use the key (I'm not "confident" enough in the system given it's price

How does it unlock the steering wheel? Right now I just have the master key in the ignition and it turned to off, this bypasses both the steering lock and the immobilizer. I was literally just scouring the inter webs to figure out how to disable the steering lock permanently. ANY INPUT? I will be installing an immobilizer bypass as well.

They do have other push button models that are made for flush install on any panel. I liked this area because it looks very OEM since it fits the hole so well.

Ah I see. I looked at your link which I should have done first haha. Gave me some visuals and info to some of those questions.

So basically if you tape the master key to the immobilizer ring, disconnect the wires instead of tap into them, and put in the cut off key it will keep the column unlocked and let the PKE system control it completely? I dont have any input on how to disable it. There's gotta be a way to remove whatever mechanism prevents it from spinning. Or see if a 2020 Tundra mechanism bolts up and electronically locks and unlocks it.

 

Yes, this is the only feasible option attempted thus far but really works great. My goal is to wire in a bypass that only works when you have the key fob and also disable the steering lock.

In reality, I'll probably just test the system out for a week or so (should be confident by then) with the key in the ignition, disable the keyed ignition, leave a cut key in the cylinder, and put a plug over all of it.

 

Yeah sounds like a good plan. At least you'll know where to start trouble shooting if it wont start, since you installed it yourself.

 

That is exactly why I like doing my own work although I don't think it will mess up. I'm quite pleased with the quality. The buttons on the fob are engraved aluminum and all the wiring/sensors seemed pretty well built.

The description from Amazon says this includes Remote start. which makes complete sense since it has its own keyfobs, and access to ignition control.

Going to give this a whack on my 3rd gen. Going to add a immobilizer bypass module too.

 

I think the 3rd gen Tundra will be similar, if not the same, wiring and the attached guide was VERY helpful! There are a lot of wires under the dash to contend with if you unsure which ones to use. I used

GBAuto T-Tap Wire Connectors, Self-Stripping Quick Splice Electrical Wire Terminals, Insulated Male Quick Disconnect Spade Terminals Assortment Kit with Storage Case - 260pcs

T-taps to connect each wire and they seemed to do the trick. Good luck, you will be happy in the end!

 

I bought a spare fortin harness that I will modify as it has most if not all the connections to make this work without having to cut or tap into factory wiring.

Thanks for the link @Beau - I'm glad to see the level of interest in this PKE install. I've done it to both my 2007 Tundra and my 2011 Sequoia, the latter of which I used to do the write up. It works so well, that I'm seriously considering doing it on wife's 2019 Highlander - which already has factory PKE and remote-start. This system is just so much better. Far better range, and the remote start stays running when you get in - you just drive off.

That said, as I pointed out in the write-up, unless you manage to use an immobilizer by-pass module, you're effectively rendering the factory immobilizer useless. That didn't matter to me because of where I live (I'm in BFE), but other users on the other forum raised legitimate objections to the bypass. I don't know if it's true that your insurer won't pay for a stolen vehicle if they find out you defeated the immobilizer (I actually doubt that) but, it is something that does need to factor into your risk/reward calculus.

I've had mine in the Tundra for over a year now, and have had zero problems. The Sequoia I did back in late September of last year. I did have a problem (self-inflicted) where the spare key I had tied to the immobilizer antenna came loose. It didn't fall out, but it was just far enough from the antenna that I had extended crank times and ultimately a few instances where I couldn't get it started. I panicked thinking I had an issue with fuel/ethanol calibration issues (something common to the flex engines), but ultimately I figured out it was the key. Once I lined it back up again, it's been rock solid ever since.

BTW, probably the most under-rated benefit of this system is the keypad that you can put on the windshield. It lets you push buttons (through the glass) to disarm the factory alarm, unlock the doors, and even enable the push-to-start button. Basically you can get full functionality of your vehicle WITHOUT A KEY/FOB. This is great when you're running late and can't find your keys. Or if you're outside and need to grab something from your car, but keys are in the house. Punch in your code, and you're in the car and on your way.

 

Hey everyone, all the props of this install go to @erkme73! His writeup on tundrasolutions and his answers to all of my nagging questions were the difference of a successful vs failed install.

 

If you don't mind, maybe you can start a new thread about the PKE, introducing it to the forum members and telling them your experience. The title of this thread leaves a lot to be desired.

 

I'll be using a bypass module when I install. I'll keep you guys up to date on how that goes. The bypass needs a negative switch to activate but doesnt seem like the PKE has one for this purpose. I will have to investigate other wise I plan to use a relay that will activate the bypass module when the starter gets power.

 

I haven't gotten that far yet, but the PKE does come with a 3 wire plug that I believe is for the bypass. Easyguard sells a bypass too, so I would think that it is set up for one...

 

That would be a great addition to the write up. Admittedly, it's far from ideal - hence the glaring warning on the first page. It'd be nice to have a part list and description of how to do it the right way.

 

I'll send Eddy, "OUR" buddy, a message and see if he can offer insight.

 

Eh, you sound way more enthusiastic about it than I do Go right ahead and do it. I need no credit. My problem is I've done it long enough ago that memory has faded on many of the critical points. You'll be a much better expert since you just recently did it. Once we know which immobilizer bypass works with it, and how to hook it up, I'll be happy to send the Word document to whoever wants to add/modify it to include the specifics.

BTW, the link you had for the EC002 is slightly different than the kit I used (and wrote about). I bought the EC002-NS. It's $5 more, but the antennas and key fob look a little different. Sounds like the install was identical though...

In that case, this thread will serve the purpose of informing others and I'll update it on the feedback I receive from the manufacturer.

 

My unit came in. I plan to buy the small panel where the pushbutton goes on a 2020 and the steering column covers to make this as factory looking as possible. Waiting on my bypass module to install.

 

Did you figure out if the 2020 parts will work? If so, do you have part numbers?

 

My bypass module will come in tomorrow so I might find time to install this weekend.
