Fuel Pump Out on 2018 FFV

Hey u'all. The PreCollisionWarning light on along with Trailer Brake Error (which I have never towed anything). Truck is still running fine with the lights on. It was a bit harder to crank up at the beginning of the day tho. MPG has no changes with E85 since day one.
So brought her in and they later determined it was the fuel pump going haywire which triggered the whole false signals (meaning the PCW and Trailer Brake are actually ok). Now they said they are gonna pull the whole gas tank apart and fuel line the whole deal apart to see what causes the fuel pump to run out. If it's fuel pump itself, then Toyota will pay for it, if it's bad gas causing that, then I will be responsible which is 2600 plus tax.
Anyone experiences this??

 

Never heard of it, but even new parts can go bad. But that is complete BS that you have to pay if it was bad gas. 1 tank wouldn’t make a pump fail. How do they know where you have been filling up the whole time you had the truck? Unless they find diesel in the tank, I’d argue that all day.

 

Did I read this right? The dealer threatened a $2600 bill on a truck still under the bumper to bumper warranty?

 

They said if it's "contaminated gas", it's on me. Not sure how to fight that logic?

 

They're probably going to look for free trash in the tank that is obviously obstructing the filter. Beyond that, it will be very hard to claim any other kind of fuel contamination. Retail gasoline pumps have a spin-on filter to remove any storage tank trash and water. Fuel contamination happens, but it is rare. Any expense you incur can be claimed back against the fuel retailer. You should be fine unless you buy your gasoline in rusty five-gallon cans that you wash out with the garden hose.

You must have a perfect a-hole for a dealer. They are stating the obvious, i.e. that they are not responsible for your mistakes and/or abuse, but you would think they would wait until they discover some obvious evidence of malfeasance.

@jptshadow You can buy the TSB with a short term subscription to Toyota Information Service, but I would insist the dealer's service dept look it up for themselves.

 

Just watched and saw about the fuel pump replacement. Was hoping to get away with just a reflash since I’ll be out of pocket.

 

@jptshadow NOTE that the video says that the required seal has been OUT OF STOCK because so many FFV owners have had this TSB done. Don't let them take your truck apart until they have received the seal!

 

I have done the red flash but the issue came back. I am well out of warranty. I was told the fuel pump is back ordered till Jan 30th. Cost is going to run around $1300. They reflashed it again, so hopefully I will be good till pump comes in. It was the second Tundra in the shop today for that issue at Gulf Coast Toyota. Given that this truck has 120k miles I am not worked up about it. It has not left me stranded, and Toyota took care of me with cam tower leak. I did have to prepay for them to order a back ordered pump. Had to laugh about that. I think pump was around $600.

 

Have a ffv. Is this because one is using E85 or not related. Never use e85. Just 87 octane. No issues so far.

 

Welcome to the wonderful world of FFV ownership. Had my fuel pump replaced last year for some hard/rich condition starting issue. Toyota dealer charged $750(new pump+ labor). $2600 sounds like rape. Fast forward to the last couple of weeks of cold temp starts.... Rich starting condition on 2 separate occasions. Once on a full tank of Chevron super and another on ethanol free 88. Both when temps were in the 20°'s. No issues starting above the 30° mark. Best of luck. That quote is garbage.

Edit: BTW pump was about $530 and the dealership comped me an hour of labor due to them screwing up some other part of my service ticket.

 

This also came out today as well. Don't know which Tundra models if it's non-FFV or FFV. Since the recall is for all of those models, I would think it's non-FFV.

I did see the video from Tundra dude 3 days ago and yesterday getting the Highlander serviced I asked my service manager about the TSB and we couldn't find anything. Since installing the supercharger I only run 91 non ox and have on occasion had my ethanol % checked and 0ed out. Still kicking my self for not going out of state for a non FFV Tundy.

I'm having the same issue. Did they ever figure out what exactly it was?

 

Check if they have a recall on your fuel pump. Thaz what happened to mine last year.

As far as i understand, their fix is a replacement fuel pump (Delphi FE0707 / OEM 2320-0S011) of the exact same model but a "new" batch. Sad thing is they have been using that part since ffv was introduced, but the recall only applies to certain years. Because that leaves a bunch of us 2015 owners left out to dry, theres a class action suit ongoing. We'll see what comes of it. But since there isn't an improved fuel pump available, I got the reflash and purchased an aftermarket pump from URD to wire in the old ones place (with higher flow capabilities for when I cash in some bitcoin for a whipple supercharger). Will post a new thread when i find a day to actually do it, sitting in the garage until then.

 

I had the fuel tank recall done on my 2019 4.6L It’s not the pump but rather a sensor attached to the pump.
