Stripped bolt

Stripped a bolt putting on step bars today. It just spins. Am I screwed or is there anything I can do?

I would say replace it with one that is new.

 

I think I stripped whatever that bolt screws into on the rocker panel.

 

Tap it and put in a bigger bolt

 

Do you have a picture to better show what you are trying to correct?

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get one to match.

Is what it's going into stripped? You can re-tap/thread it.

 

Re-tap it.

 

Is there a welded nut on the other side?

Can’t get the bolt out and can’t tighten it.

 

Does it free spin by hand?

 

Yes. Does tighten for a 1/2 turn then loose again. Just confused because it’s not all the way in.

 

Sounds stripped.
Easy fix.....tack weld it
Hard fix....cut head off, drill out bolt, re-tap it and install new bolt.

I would tack weld it.

 

Not everyone has access to welder.

 

I’d drill it out and try to retap it out.

 

Can't be that expensive to stop at a muffler shop and have them do it.

 

You broke the weld on the nut on the inside. Remove the other bolt and the nuts holding on the step for just that bracket. Pull down on the bracket while trying to tighhten it. You may get lucky and the nut on the inside may grab. If you have a impact or drill use that instead of by hand. If that doesn't work try unbolting while pulling. If that doesn't work center punch and drill the head off the bolt. You will then have to use a nutsert to reinstall the bracket.

A lot less frustrating than try to remove it.
Especially if you don't have all the right tools.

 

That wont work, he broke the weld on the nut on the inside.

 

My real answer is to beat the crap out if it to remove but I imagine he wants to keep using the step lol

 

Is the nut welded??

 

Yes on the inside. As they build the truck the nut is tack welded on the inside of the channel. When you cross thread the bolt a figure more force is needed it can break the weld and the nut spins on the inside.

 

OP said he was putting in step bars...

 

Step bars as in running boards? Brackets are bolted on the inside rocker on the truck.
