A few people have mentioned that it is not advisable to use shims with King Coilovers. What say you tundras.com?

they are coil overs, you can adjust the preload to your liking.

True but is there a detriment to taking the additional lift from the shims to, say, accommodate a 35” tire vs the 2.5 lift of the coilover.

adding shims or spacers on top of coilovers defeat the purpose imo then again the coachbuilder ones are shims so it might be ok. you are fine with KING only to fit 35"s and still have a nice ride.
I can see a use for the shims if you have a trd pro with fox suspension from toyota. cheap and easy mod to fit bigger tires.

I’m pretty sure the king Coilovers come set at 3” of lift and pre adjusted to accommodate the tundra lean. My did from dirty deeds/filthy Motorsports. I agree, shims are not a good idea on top of the kings

What’s the “why” behind that? Not that I don’t believe it just curious what the reasoning is. My understanding is the max lift settled from a king OE kit is 2.5 inches. Having to take a half inch from the passenger side would mean the overall lift would be closer to two inches over the hub height. What issues does the @Coachbuilder1 shim kit cause? Why not take advantage of the additional 1/2”-1” of lift?

Because with adjustable Coilovers you “adjust” them for proper height as well as to accommodate the lean. Trying not to sound like an ass but you can kill these birds with one stone.

You don’t sound like an asshole at all. I get what you’re saying but hypothetically if an adjustable coilover provides a max lift of 2.5” and you add a half inch shim you get a 3” lift or half an inch more than the adjustable coilover can provide, right?

Your absolutely right. If they are currently set at 2.5” both left and right. You will get 3” of lift with 2 shims on the left and one on the right. But the King shocks will adjust to 3” on their own.

There’s no problem with running the shims if you want to bud. They will do exactly what your wanting them to do. I just wanted you to understand that your Coilovers can give you 3” of lift.

    Happy new year

If you go to max preload on the kings, you will probably need a shim on the drivers side to take care of the lean.

If he kept it at 2.5" on the Kings and added a shim, would the ride feel softer than adjusting the spring to 3' with no shim?

I may be wrong but I believe a 1/2 inch shim actually provides 1 inch of lift. That would put you at 3.5 inches of lift. Something to do with geography I think.
