I have an 08 with the 4.7 engine and 160k miles. We just bought a travel trailer that weighs 4200 pounds. I want to replace this truck with a Tundra that has the 5.7 engine.

Any suggestions concerning which year would be best for a replacement? The 17 gets bad marks from Consumer Reports but I have trouble believing that the 17 is worse than similar years.

Is the 18 significantly better for towing and upgrades?

Thanks for any advice you have.

I have a 17 and have zero issues. I don’t think it changed at all except for minor cosmetic upgrades. Makes me wonder if Consumer Reports is full of shit?

As an owner of an 18 model year I would say go with a 2017. You don’t have to worry about all of the TSS crap that has been installed on the 18 plus model years...

I love my 2017. You just have to accept you’ll want to upgrade the lighting and audio. No one seems to like TSS...

My advice is buy any 2007+ Tundra with the big 5.7 V8. Its kind of up to you as to how much $$$$ you spend, I know the updated trucks have a bit nicer interior, but IMO its kind of silly to buy a newer model Tundra when its the same damn truck under the skin if you buy an already depreciated 07-13 model year in good shape with reasonable miles.

CR is full of shit. If you want nannies buy the 18, if not buy a 16/17. You can’t go wrong either way and you will LOVE the 5.7. Mine gets the same mileage as my old ‘03 did. With gobs more power.

As long as you get one with the 38 gallon man. If you end up with one older than 18 just upgrade to the factory led headlights and call it good

Air lift, black out emblems, wheels, tonneau cover, tires, led lighting, hidden step rail, remote start.
I have a 2010 and a 2016. Biggest noticeable difference is throttle response. The 2010 is very sensitive, and new drivers spin tires. My 2016 is lifted with 295/20s but the throttle has a lag programmed into it. Like newer features, but 2010 has 200k runs great too.

18 gets mostly more electronic gizmos like the MFD in the gauge cluster. If you can find a 19 on a lot, you can get a decent deal and 0% financing since the 2020s are out.

The LED headlights on the 18 and up Tundras are exceptional and the TSS on my Platinum has been bulletproof so far.

    I bought a 2017 ... simply because it doesn't have TSS. (and I got a good deal on my 2017 :))

I just didn't want (or need) all the "tech" stuff that Toyota is thinking they need to put on their vehicles.

Less Tech = higher reliability factor in my opinion. Just my thoughts...

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Exactly which block dots did the '17 receive?

Luck and enjoy those Toyotas. : ^ ))))
