    Good Morning All,

Looking at purchasing my first Toyota Tundra...after many years with Ford pickups, but have a few questions after looking at a used vehicle yesterday...it is a

2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 TRD upgrade, 29,800 miles

All 4 tires have wear on the outside of the tire. They are Michelin LX AT2...should get 50k out of these tires, but there doesn't appear to be more than 5k left on these tires. I'm assuming the front tires are out of alignment, then were rotated to the rear. Anything else cause this?

Also noted, when looking at the front calipers, they are marked with what appears to be lettering or initials...this reminds me of a junk yard pull. But, is this something from the factory? Does Toyota label or mark parts from the factory? See images, markings circled in red.

    Right Front:
    Left Front:

Lastly, when looking at the frame through the wheel wells, the passenger side looks normal:

But, the drivers side appears to potentially have some overspray or some other whitish substance on the frame...

Are all of these normal for a Tundra from the factory?

I have NO experience with Tundra's and am curious if this is normal, or from this forum's experience, this is not normal and something I should be cautious of if I see on a 2017 Tundra.

There are no reported accidents for this vehicle, paint matches, and lines look good.

    Thanks,
    Rick

Looks like it was definitely in an accident and rebuilt. Not all get reported. If I was you I would move on to another one.

Having been under mine... that all looks factory to me. There are grease markings on all sorts of parts under there. As for the tires, the original LTXs lasted about 25K miles on mine before I replaced them with “real” LTXs. Remember the factory tires are not the same tires (softer compound, wear much faster) you get you buy aftermarket from a tire supplier. I expert to get 60K out of the replacements... I wasn’t surprised the originals were shot at less than 30K miles.

LTX L/T2's should last 50 to 60 thousand miles if the alignment is true, and you rotate them often.
Driving habits also have an effect on tire life.

Checked my 2018. It does have factory grease pencil markings where you have it pictured.

The white overspray on the frame is a wonder...

Does it have color matched bed liner?

There is a guy here who works at the plant and is familiar with their paint and assembly. I’ll try to tag him and see if he has an idea where it came from.

@WNY PAT your truck doesnt have the paint marker markings he is asking about. Check the picture again he posted and he has it circled in red. That is definitely a part from a junk yard. That is how they mark them.

Thanks for the photos, definitely has the grease pencil marks. I don't see any on the calipers, but the others do match. So true on the salt. I looked at a 2016 truck yesterday from Rochester NY, and it was rusted horrible on the undercarriage.

Mine is a little more seasoned than the one he’s looking at. Lol. Maybe someone can crawl under a southern truck and take a look.

Guys, I bought my 18 with no mileage from a dealer. It has the markings. Those are not necessarily from a junk yard.

And, I am over 30k on my factory Michelin’s, and they are still going strong... which is a shame, because I want to buy beefier tires and I am forcing myself to wait until they wear out.

    Welcome from NY.

Looks like factory markings to me.
What is the TRD upgrade? I don't see the red sway bars, only Bilstein shocks.

Did he buy this new? If so, he still has everything under warranty which means he should've gotten things serviced at a dealership. I would try to get some kind of paper trail on it to establish a time frame and maybe the dealership noted something. Either way, trust your gut . If it doesnt feel right, it ain't for you and move on.

When I research the VIN online, it gives me the following packages:

LU Bedliner w/out Deck Rail System "Port"
    OF TRD Off-Road Package "Factory"
    SL SR5 Package "Factory"
    SP SR5 Upgrade Package "Factory"

Should that include the red sway bars?

I strongly disagree. Junk parts I've seen have been marked with yellow paint pen, typically with some info or coding regarding fitment. In the case of ECUs, they will paint yellow across the cover screws to insure you have not tampered with the internals.

Those are factory inspection marks. If you get underneath and look, there will be an inspector's mark on or near every critical torqued fastener. What kind of collision would it take to destroy BOTH front steering knuckles?. If that truck had that kind of collision, we wouldn't be looking at it now; it would have been totaled with blood on the seats.

Wear on the outside of the tire comes from hard aggressive cornering. The tires have been rolling over, and scrubbing the tread corner. Not an issue, doesn't even indicate bad alignment. If these are the worst things wrong with this truck, OP should buy it and give it a good home.

Edit: The white overspray in the wheel well likely is from at least a fender replacement. If you are looking for a virgin "no accidents" truck, this is not the one. I would take a close look to see what else repaired. Not easy to uncover, but if you look closely you'll find things indicating if the hood, grille, etc has been replaced or repaired. e.g. lack of underhood environmental stickers, AC refrig stickers, etc. Stuff happens...if it's a light fender bender, buy it without reserve.

It is at the dealership, I am going to ask for the previous owner's name and number. What I do know is that it was first used in May of 2017, and it was bought locally to where it is being sold from.

    Valid points, thank you.

OK, my mistake...Overspray in the wheel well actually on the driver side rear. Sight down the bed side from both ends. If there was body repair on the bed side, it will be pretty hard to conceal the waves. If you find it's been repaired, decide if you want to live with that knowledge, but it's probably fine with no long term effect.

Did you try using the VIN to go into Toyota.com Owner's Section for owner and dealer maintenance?

I have 45k on my original tires (2018 bought new). It looks as though these will easily make 60k, lots of tread left. I will probably replace at 50k, don't like to wear tires down to the nubbins. I typically drive unladen, no off-road, very little towing so that is probably the reason.

I did, just complaint of Left door locks not working properly and complaint of "black spots" on vehicle since 2017. Performed routine inspections and maintenance. Previous owner did not have serviced a Toyota dealership regularly.

    Great idea...thank you!

Here is a picture of the side where there was the overspray. I know I didn't get a down the side picture, and I think my wife noted a dent on that side.

    No way, no how.
Imagine the phone call *you* would make to a dealer that did that! There’s NO WAY you are getting that from a dealer unless it’s run by complete dumbasses.

My ‘17 CM had similar mileage when I bought it. Drove about 3k more miles and replaced the tires cuz they were getting pretty low on tread. I don’t get anywhere near 50k on any tires.
