Double din head unit suggestions

You're right. I'm just going to order from them. I had it narrowed down to one but the lack of reverse wire for the camera has complicated things. Waiting for another sale at this point.

 

That is the type of question Critchfueld will answer even before you buy from them if you know the HU...I really wish they sold Android HUs.....

 

Been comparing that one with their AVH1550 but also looking Sony. Have you got a post or build explaining your install given I have 2004 DC Limited also and wondering what I lose....rear entertainment, amp ?

Also, can anyone explain what 8 speakers they are meaning in my below Veh Specs ?
I assumed I had FNT L/R, Rear L/R and FNT L/R Tweeters

 

My 06 DC Limited JBL has/had a 6 channel 8 speaker stereo. Back doors one speaker each door Left/Right (2 channels). Front doors mid range & subwoofer speakers lower door 4 speakers (2 channels). Upper front door tweeter each door (2 channels).

When I replaced my JBL head unit with an Alpine. I got rid of the factory JBL amp using the

$35 Metra 70-8117 Factory Amplifier Bypass Harness fits Select 2003-2006 Toyota Vehicles

Metra 70-8117 amp bypass wiring harness. With the new Alpine head unit and the amp bypassed I had a 4 channel set up. I installed Rockford Fosgate 6.5" coaxial speakers in the rear doors and Kenwood KFC-P710PS Component speakers in the front door with the tweeters mounted in the stock location. A Kenwood KSC-SW11 Powered Subwoofer is under the rear passenger seat in the jack compartment.

 

Thanks, went back out earlier to double check what I was asking and saw/remembered the one "Upper front door tweeter each door (2 channels)"

 

I didn’t lose anything factory except the old head unit. Crutchfield gave me a few setup options when I ordered the head unit. I picked the one where I kept my factory amp and steering wheel controls. It was a kinda simple install. They send you a harness that has a box in between the factory harness and the new head unit. There are some not so detailed instructions, but if you’re good with these sorts of things then it shouldn’t take you long to get the hang of it. It probably requires a total of 20 butt end splices so be prepared for that. Most of the wires coming from the head unit match colors with the ones coming from the harness. I love my head unit. I have the Pioneer backup camera and I installed it in my tailgate handle. I also installed Kicker speakers in my front doors and lost the midrange speaker, but I personally can’t tell the difference. The kickers sound so much better than the worn out JBL’s that were in there. If you need further help when the time comes to install it I’d be more than happy to send you some pics of my install. It took me probably a total of 5 hours including the camera install. The camera does not come with the head unit. Also, I have the rear entertainment and it is fully compatible if you hook up the right wires. You could even go as far as hooking up the AV out of the head unit to the rear screens so that you could play the same video on all 3 screens.

 

Did you have to do trimming to make that work? I really want a sub, and I was looking at a compact one because I don’t want to install an amp and I also want a clean install without taking up much of the extremely limited space.

 

There are opportunities over in turd gen section. A couple guys have gotten rid of their h/u’s on 2019’s. Some ‘thinking’ about it.

 

No trimming. The jack had to be relocated to my tool box. Removed the cover from the compartment and the subwoofer fits perfectly. I did put a piece of foam rubber down underneath the subwoofer so no rattling. The Kenwood powered sub is real easy to install. Power is supplied using a add ciricuit at the fuse box, ground, and RCA cables to the head unit.

Darn, your pic just says IMG. Anyway, that sounds awesome and I will get myself one in the near future. It sounds unobtrusive and helpful in adding that little extra bump that you don’t get from door speakers.

If I remember correctly from another post you made, it was the ND-BC8 ? Mind posting a daytime view seen from head unit ? I'm trying not to overthink this lumens/lux numbers. So far I'm looking at the Pioneer NB-BCB w\0.9 LUX compared to NATIKA IP69K w\0.01 LUX

$650 AVH-2550NEX 6.8" Capacitive Touchscreen, Double Din – Wired Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, Bluetooth, Backup Camera, SiriusXM, HD Radio, FLAC, Hi-Volt RCA

AVH-2550NEX. I definitely don't need much thump thump to listen to country/rock n roll but something decent that will make Stairway to Heaven type songs sound decent when I feel froggy
Hopefully Crutchfield can help with that when I call !

Yes, the ND-BC8 is the camera I installed. The image is up to par with the factory cameras in newer Toyota vehicles. I believe it’s also the same or similar camera Toyota puts in their vehicles. The physical looks are extremely similar and the image quality is quite the same too.

 

Thanks Cameron....I do notice by zooming in that there is at least ~1/2 gap on the sides. Is this normal for most of these HU and one needs to add a trim kit or something ?

 

Yes there is. I have not installed the dash kit yet to fill in these gaps. I will have to do some fabricating with the plastic inserts they sent because I can’t seem to make them work the way the instructions say they should.

 

Did you get the KSC-SW11?

 

Yes. I have had it about 3 years now. If you're looking for loud rattling the windows booming bass it's not for you. If you're looking to add some bass with some bump to your sound system it gets the job done without taking up much space and is really easy to install.

 

Sweet. I definitely don’t want something extreme. I just want to make up for what my door speakers won’t provide. This looks like an awesome setup and I can’t wait to get mine up and running.

Alpine Single Din head unit - Older model with XM and USB for phone connection had it my previous F150
Alpine KTP-445A 4-Channel 45 Watt RMS x 4 - plug and play - just plugs into the wiring harness adapter and head unit. Zip tied inside dash behind head unit.
Kenwood Component 6.5 KFC-P710PS Speakers with In-line crossover network in front doors. Tweeters fit perfect in stock location.
Rockford Fosgate Punch P16 6" 2-way speakers in rear doors
Kenwood KSC-SW11 powered subwoofer under rear passenger seat

Future plans are to update the headunit to an Alpine double din touchscreen. Staying with Alpine due to the the Alpine Amp and all wiring will be plug and play.

 

Older model Pioneer 6" touchscreen unit. Believe there are several similar models, this one the 3800 variety with bluetooth, DVD, backup cam support and Waze NAV when synced with your phone via cable. Would prefer the 7" screen versions and to have Apple car play. Direct mount to factory brackets with no adapter kit, only the wire harness. This was one of the mods I deemed necessary to keep the vehicle long term. Backup cam is a lifesaver when hooking up to trailers every week and parking in tight spots. Worth every dollar spent (around $300 with head unit, camera, wire harness and park brake bypass for video). Also did the swap a 12v outlet for a USB and aux-in mod while i was at it.

 

Also, new to the forum and have just gained my second pearl of wisdom here. Will be ordering the Kenwood KSC-SW11 compact sub for the tool compartment. Maybe a second for the passenger storage compartment? anyone know if it will fit? I can get rid of my 20 year old 8" kicker Solobaric and Punch 75 amp now....

 

^^ Absolutely agree. That one (Kenwood DMX906S) is the one I installed in my Tundra, after installing the same unit in my NBS Tahoe a few months ago. Also installed the rear camera. The Kenwood, while pricey, is a NICE unit, and having Apple CarPlay is a good feature to have given the amount of driving I do.

@FirstGenVol Curious if you ever figured this out ?
This may not apply if you figured it out but thought I'd share just in case, not just for your situation but for others that come along. Most all radios utilize universal color codes as it pertains to speakers, antenna control wire, hot, gnd and even reverse.

As far as the Alpine you have mentioned and as an example

The angle of view from your camera is great; did you shim the bottom of your camera a lot to get this angle? I too mounted a camera in the handle and am happy with the outcome but I don't see as high into the picture as you're showing.

 

No shimming, just mounted the camera and angled it to show just a small part of my bumper. My camera came with an adjustable metal bracket that the camera pivots on. I see yours is a solid, pre-angled camera.

 

Did you ever get that Alpine installed? Any feedback?

I think it’s time I upgrade. While my cheapie is still running great, I’ve realized that I need hands free calling more and more. Right now I just put my phone on speaker and set it in my lap but it’s not the best. I can do the install myself but may do some calling around tomorrow to see what specials are out there.

Where is everyone’s mic mounted and how is the quality?

 

Darn it! I just realize that I forgot to install my bluetooth mic! Dang it. LOL. Now I gotta pop the dash trim back off to plug it in. On my Tahoe I had routed it along the bottom of the instrument cluster and had it mounted on the steering wheel column. Going to do the same on the Tundra.

I'm very happy with my Kenwood DMX-706s.

 

On the Atoto A6 pro unit, there's a built-in mic and a mic you can route if you choose. I use the built-in without complaints. Kept the other just in case but haven't needed it.
