Gonna be taking a weekend trip to Charleston in a few weeks. Need some locals to recommend fun things to do. This will be my first visit. Only plan on staying two nights. Bringing the wife.

Also need to decide if we take the tundra or her mdx. Google maps street view shows a lot of narrow streets. Is it easy to navigate a tundra or should we take the smaller vehicle?

    Thanks all.

Charleston is one of the greatest ola was to visit! It is fantastic. If you enjoy food than it doesn't get much better than Charleston. Hank's seafood is one of our favorites.

also Oak Steakhouse. Not cheap but it is legit.

the MDX will be easier to parallel park downtown. we take the wifes 4-runner if we are going downtown. where are you staying? definitely just walk around downtown a little. day or night, its beautiful. are you into bars, breweries, nightlife? or history tours, ghost tours and fishing? you can always do a fort Sumter tour but thatll eat most of a day for you.

Also, I would take the MDX. Charleston can get a little tight in places. I would recommend the MDX.

We are open to anything. We don't get out much since having kids. But we got a sitter and it will be my birthday. A nice meal will be planned for sure. Plan on getting down late Friday and leaving Sunday. We are staying downtown at a place called dewberry. Really wanted to break in the new tundra but would hate to be in a comprised situation. Maybe we will rent vette :monocle:

not "fun" but seeing the Hunley in real life and is the one thing that has stuck with me in the last 20 years when I play tourist. "fun" I recommend the harbor boat tour without the stop at Ft Sumter.

there we go, vacation in style! theres a bunch of excellent food walking distance from you. Hanks for seafood, Halls is great for steaks, we like OKU for sushi, theres more bars than you can shake a stick at. theres some good museums to check out like the old exchange and provost dungeon at the end of Broad street, the museum of the Hunley, theres the old market that neat to walk through. a short drive over the bridge takes you to shem creek if you want to see boats and things like that. ill keep thinking and posting things up.

if you want to check out some beautiful old trees and see the Department of Natural Resources campus, drive to james island and walk past the gate at the end of fort Johnson road and you have the best view of the harbor in town.

A real small place I was amazed about was the old Powder House. I was there when they were digging around the yard of it and all the stuff they were finding, 100s of years of stuff. It's just off the market.

I have not heard of Hanks, will put it on my list. :fistbump:

BTW, 2 days ain't enough time.

I had no issue driving the Tundra or GMC there.

Raw 167 is the best seafood you will find downtown. Take a boat tour out to Ft Sumpter and you get to see downtown from a different perspective. Halls Chop House any time after six is amazing. Just go sit at the bar or make a reservation. Billy will meet you at the door. The old prison haunted tour is a fun walking tour or you and your wife can do a horse drawn carriage tour through the battery. Or just walk it. As for a vehicle. I would take hers all day. Yes you CAN drive the tundra but you will be better off in a smaller vehicle.

Magnolia plantation is about. Twenty minute drive from where you will be staying and is really nice to go walk through also.

The wreck up in Shem creek is also pretty good seafood. Take a jacket though. youre eating on a porch for the most part haha. you can watch the boats from there too.

I know we're just giving you food suggestions, but some of these places are entertainment too. sunday brunch at the Macintosh was pretty damn good last time I had it. Walking around the battery at night is quiet and romantic if youre going for that sorta thing. if you like Italian, its maybe a 25 minute drive to my side of town, but Wild Olive on johns island is our go to place. you need years to even start to try all the food around here lol

    Charleston is a great city.

    A few thoughts:

    1. Take the MDX if you’re going to be downtown. Streets are narrow and parking is at a premium.

    2. Someone already mentioned this, but go to 167 Raw for the best seafood in Charleston. It’s small, so be prepared to wait and likely sit at the bar, but it is some of the best food I’ve had. Also, get the carnitas taco...not seafood, but so good.

    3. Other suggested restaurants in no particular order:

    - FIG
    - The Ordinary (oyster sliders!)
    - Husk (if the wait is long, go to the bar next door)
    - Lewis BBQ (Legit Texas BBQ in Charleston; brisket is a+++)

    4. If you’re into liquor, check out High Wire Distillery - sorghum whiskey is awesome.

    5. Walk! The downtown area is like going back 200+ years. Plenty of museums, civil war era houses, etc. we love to walk for blocks and admire the architecture and history. Especially “South of Broad”.

    6. Don’t ride the horse carriages in my opinion...won’t get into why.

    7. Several plantations nearby for tours, etc. Depends on if that interests you or not. Google can help find one.

I guess I'm going to have to check out 167 raw now with all y'all talking it up.

And yes walking around is the best part of Charleston.

What are the haunted tours like? Are these local history lessons by foot? Or some kind of themed attraction full of Halloween actors?

I personally am not a big fan. Last time we were in Charleston it was about 101 degrees and 98% humidity. Walking around for 1.5 hours and just walking through basements of buildings with no air conditioning was not my idea of fun. We were with a group of 6 and all of us were like is this ever going to end.... There were some beautiful buildings but it was a little goofy. It was one of those deals where one person Was dying to do a ghost tour and was whining until they got there way.

I much prefer to walk around. Stop in a bar or restaurant and grab a drink or sit down and eat some freshly made pralines. Then off to the next spot to do the same.

We also did a dinner cruise out to Ft. Sumter and it was fantastic. It I was as the sun was setting and to see Charleston from the bay was amazing. Expensive but way worth the money compared to the ghost tours where we sweated absolute missiles and just wanted to be done!

I’ve really missed being able to go to Taco Boy since I left SC. There is one in Folly Beach, which I’d say is a must-see spot during your trip. They have hammocks available under the pier, and it’s a cool place to see some dolphins. Have an awesome trip, whatever you end up doing!

    One other thing.....
We always stay on Isle of Palms which is about 15 minutes away from downtown. Absolutely gorgeous area. There is a restaurant in Mount Pleasent called Jack's Cosmic Dogs. We found it as it has been on Food Network and Alton Brown said it was the best hot dog he has ever ate. We decided to stop one day for a cheaper lunch. It is stupid good and will absolutely make your toes curl!!!!

A hot dog with sweet potato mustard and blue cheese slaw is amazingly simple and good. They have homemade root beer served in iced mugs to go with it. It is our family and groups most favorite place to go for a cheaper lunch.
