I'm willing to loan my Gordon West books for anyone who wants to take a stab at the exams. I think my general covered up to June this year, but my tech and extra should still be good.

My mount should be here soon, so hopefully I can get the install completed while I'm off of work. I'm looking forward to trying out the APRS messaging.

Dude, it's awesome. I've used it before in mines with HT, but the 400XDR has so many more features and the touch screen makes messaging a breeze.

EDIT: I have a surprise that was just delivered, will post up after I leave the gym and get to work!

Lol good news and bad news, I have an aprs voice module and a bluetooth module. I guess there's only one expansion header...

    Ok quick follow up...

BT works flawlessly, be warned that there are no instructions obviously. I had no idea there was a hidden header. There's a tiny button on the module you depress with a mini USB cable in order to pair via the front panel. I'm just glad I didn't short anything out plugging this into the voice synthesizer header.

The voice synthesizer, I'm going to have to play with this one. Right now it just tells at me on boot up my callsign and when I change channels/frequencies. Not sure how to make it read the APRS messages, need to mess with it more I guess.

UPDATE: Figured out that it can read aprs messages via the MSG menu by pressing voice. It also allows you to record up to 5 minutes or a rolling last 30 seconds via the menu.

If anyone wants a video demo let me know and I'll upload something to Vimeo.

Here's the headset, it's actually pretty decent.

Not yet, I'm going the Yaesu route which means C4FM, Fusion, and Wires-X. I'm still learning about the dual band digital modes with regards to DSTARS and DMR etc.

    EDIT:
Did a really quick demo video for you guys of the radio using the voice synthesizer and playback module.

You guys using APRS really should try running it on APRSdroid on an old tablet (make sure it’s got a gps antenna), it gives full maps, you can track yourself, show all contacts, digipeaters, etc. Way more data then the head unit can and easier to read. It can also be made portable with a mobilinkd tnc. B87974DC-CA3B-4FCF-875E-0D63C8BF892A.jpg

For those who ordered the Lido mic mount, it comes with 3M VHB tape and adheres great. The same adhesive strength as a GoPro mount (same VHB adhesive). Looks good, definately not going anywhere. Wiped down the location with rubbing alcohol then warmed up the adhesive with a heat gun, then firmly applied. THE END - Would recommend for $5.

I guess I'll need to breakout the heat gun because I couldn't get mine to stick last night.

On the bright side I got my radio installed. I used the Lido LM-AD-3 screwed into a Proclip dash mount. I still need to deal with the cable, but so far I'm really happy with the position.

I have mine paired to a Yaesu BT. Are you trying to do a homebrew homebrew solution?

I tried out SMSGTE and it is really cool, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a situation where I wouldn't have cell coverage, but would have radio communication to a gateway. Time to go wheel and find out.

I have 20 acres in NWA (North West Arkansas) where there's no cell and only RF... Trust me, you'll find it in a 4x4 :)

Well... actually... my (general) license needs renewed here in a few months. I just sold my yeasu 8900 (dual band... I'll attach a pic of the dash setup.)? (along with my Subaru Forester 2003) to my twin brother for $1. However, I now have the 1972 Chevy C10 for the "good" trade value factor.

Our goal is to pull an 19-25 ft airstream, which could include the HF ham shack. But, for auto/mobile I'm really wanting to trick it out with the latest- on the road tech!

I've been offroading plenty of places without cell service, but here in California that is usually due to mountains and I doubt that I'd be able to hit a repeater or igate to get a message out over RF. On my previous radio I would have one side tune to the frequency that our group uses and the other side scanning local repeaters. Being out of range of the repeaters is very common. I suppose I could get lucky and be able to reach a node that would then re-transmit my message.

Dude, I'm not going anywhere near that playa

Well that was clever, well done! Seems painful to look at while driving if needed though.

OBTW, I figured I would show you my install. It is easily removed (because some times I need to park in airport parking garages) to keep it out of sight. 20191229_123342.jpg 20191229_123551.jpg

And order placed. Happy birthday to me. Ordered the FTM-400XDR, $140 discount so can't argue with that.
