I have seen a Heavy Duty wrecker crane out an old F-150 that went over a huge embankment. I can't remember how the tow operator attached it, but it was something to watch. Looked very similar to how a sling load looks on a helo.

Some people need to stick to the pavement.

No person in their right mind would look at that ground and think "Hey, that wet lake bed looks just fine."

A 612er was the zip code for lower Minnesota area (Minneapolis–Saint Paul) and sometimes called Citiiots by other locals when they rut your 40 acre field and get stuck with there minivan and try to blame you for not having a sign saying you can get stuck.

Hopefully he has the cash to buy all the folks who rescued him AND his truck a steak and lobster dinner. And then make the largest single donation to the recovery club and 4X4 club in history. That’s a lot of people doing a lot of work and spending a lot of their holiday time trying to undo something that could have been prevented had #known just talked to a local or read any of the 100 warnings not to venture out there at this time of year. It’ll be good for the local spray and wash I suppose. I hope they load up some YouTube videos of the recovery!

    Good point.

Look for a video at some point in the future detailing it all. One of the recovery groups is setting up a nonprofit, so this will be a great marketing venture for that.

He had an Earth anchor. He tried it. It didn't work.

A playa is an ancient lake bed, the ground is a very fine dusty powder. When it gets wet it just sucks you in - there is no using an Earth anchor because there is virtually no bottom to the playa material.

    He needs the snow cat.

I live near the salt flats in NW Utah - this happens all the time here. Same playa material, same people who aren't from around here. We have signs all over most areas warning people not to drive on the mud and people still do it. Some get away with it, most don't.

I've been following this guy since this happened - I have a 4runner and am on some recovery pages on FB and this was reported there immediately. Last time this happened near Wendover on the NV/UT border a guy with a snow cat (tracked vehicle) went out and extracted them. This also happened recently near the annodes section of Kennecott Copper Mine and the recovery team was able to get out 2 buried trucks with basic 4x4 recovery vehicles.

We all make mistakes - no need for name calling. This guy learned the hard way, and in doing so he taught thousands of others who watched this remotely where NOT to drive around here - at least not when it's wet.

Last week I nearly rolled my 4runner after driving out on a "spine" of some really fine mine tailings up Rattlesnake Trail in Utah. I drove out, when reversing back the left side gave out and I started to roll in that direction. Front right tire came off the ground and every time I turned the wheel even a little I rolled further to the left. I was reaching the point of going over and finally got someone capable to spot me and drove out of it. The point is when you really use your vehicle for trail/offroad use, shit is going to happen. We should be thankful for the people out there who make mistakes and then allow us to look into their experiences because it really helps us all become more experienced.

    Thanks George. =]

Point well taken. But what seems to be forgotten is this could've been prevented, in that he was told what conditions were like out there and still went, thus stuck.

Let's just hope all of us who go off-roading can learn the lesson!! And thanks for being part of recovering those in the same or similar predicament!

If this mud is as toxic as people are saying, I really hope he gives that rig the best cleaning it has ever seen.
