Hi guys, I have a question for all of you smart truckers here. I got 2010 tundra with around 230k miles , was running Mobil 1 synthetic oil in it every ~10k miles since I got the truck (78k miles). My dad was keep telling me that I should use stp oil additive after 100k miles on the truck but I did not believed him.
I have no problems at all with truck and it is run and sounds just fine.
Well, he finally talked me in to it, so I added it at last oil change.
What surprised me that looks like truck is sounded better now, runs quieter and gets better mpg. Does this STP oil additive really works or this is ''placebo'' effect? Will it do any harm to the engine? Or it is just a snake oil without any harm/good effect at all?
I live in cold climate (Alaska) and keep my truck outside most of the time, will STP cause oil to be thicker and will not lubricate engine well at cold starts?
Looking forward to hear your opinions.
Oh, and excuse my broken English, I was not born American, came to USA 15 years ago.

Most modern oils do NOT need additional additives. The amount of research that goes into oil these days is unbelievable. The base stock for synthetic oils with out the additives is better than the best oil 20 years ago.
If you use good quality oil (Mobil Shell valvoline etc..) don’t screw up there oil by making your own brew with extra additives.
These oil companies spend millions on there oil blends.

Thank you, I got it - no STP.
What about oil that I got now( with stp) should I drain it and put new oil in or is this ok to keep it - only couple hundred miles is on the oil that I got now ( 7.3 quarts of Mobil 1 -0w20 fully synthetic with one small can of stp in it)

Many would argue to replace oil to rid the STP. I would probably just change earlier than normal scheduled. In the meantime, let the engine warm up a few minutes longer before driving than normal to let oil heat up and do its thing.

When I was in Anchorage in 11/ 12 we naturally had the record winter. I used Lucas Upper Cylinder treatment added to gas tank to quiet things down a bit at cold start. What can I say.. it worked. Quite well actually. Still use it. The only thing I add to my crankcase is MotorKote anti friction. It works. MotorKote is not an additive. It doesn't mix with or displace oil. It adheres to the internal metal surfaces to decrease friction. Good stuff but a bit pricey. Don't confuse MotorKote with the worthless Slick50 additive crap.

Thank you everyone, I will keep STP for another 3k miles and than will change oil in engine.
So far truck seems to run fine so I think 3k miles will do no harm.
I got avrg 14.7 mpg on this fuel tank , use to be 13.5 mpg. I think I'm not too heavy on pedal now though.

Quick update, I'm on 3rd oil change after stp, no issues with the truck, so looks like at least it did not harm it. Tundras are awesome

Sure STP is 'old school' yet its not going to harm anything, ever.
Its old school stuff for 60-70's engineered oil, it helped back then, isn't really needed today yet won't hurt a thing. Back then it probably helped more to increase viscosity (which didn't hold up as well in 60-70s oil compared to todays), not really what you need in a Cold environment.

Luck and enjoy those Toyotas. : ^ )))

I m running the STP oil treatment and I can tell you my truck no longer sounds like a 1st gen cummings it has not changed anything in the truck I run conventional oil and blue bottle of stp actually toyota has done every oil change but 2 since new in 2011 to now 227000 mile I have always liked Lucas but after adding the STP the truck no longer sound like a diesle my 2 cents.

By dads ads stp to every vehicle he has for last 10 years - no issues at all.
I'm using full synthetic mobil1, no issues as well, I'm getting about 13.5 mpg avrg on my 2010 tundra in winter
