Wrecked 2000 tundra

I recently crashed my 2000 tundra on ice. I luckily didn’t hit the median too bad and was curious if would be worth even repairing the damage...

No frame damage whatsoever, I drove it back home over 60 miles at highway speeds with no issues.

 

You’re looking at about 750-1000 in junkyard parts, plus painting to match. Up to you if you think it’s worth that.

Thank you for the reply, that doesn’t seem too bad then. I did file a claim with the insurance company so I’m hoping it won’t be totaled..

go get a bed (i paid $300 with tailgate and lights) and the bumper. fender can probably be pulled back.. mine was much worse than yours

just search car-part for the body parts you need. may luck out and find them in the right color for the right price. your bed should be easier to find than my 8ft bed. I would take it and have the frame checked with the bed off just for piece of mind though. shops typically wont charge much to straighten the frame if it needs it. this truck he charged me a whooping 100 bucks to tweak it back (it was just a hair out of spec), Bed can be swapped DIY with a few friends or a engine hoist

i just put the wheels on from my tacoma last week. they're temporary for now. but yes they look killer! thinking about the TRD Pro 4runner wheels for this one. the fj trail teams on it now are the tacomas. its just down for restoration as of now

Its not worth what you could sell it for, its worth what it would cost to replace it.

Even if worse case scenario, it costs $1k to fix, you are still thousands under what it would cost to replace it.

I'd fix that in a heartbeat. Heck, if you where close, I'd buy it off you and fix it. If you decide to sell, your going to make someone else very happy with that project.

Heck, people here wouldn't even bother fixing it. Hammer out the bed a little and just drive the thing for another ten years.

Cool. Small world. I'd give you my truck bed as I'm planning on flatbedding mine this summer, except my bed is kinda banged up in the same place as yours. (hence the flatbed project.)

 

Gotcha, I’ve thought about the flatbed route as well. Overall though I’m going to get an estimate on a bed replacement and probably get a new pint job and call it good.

 

If you can find one in a junkyard, there are only about six bolts that hold it on so you could save a lot by doing it yourself and then getting paint (if you even need paint, its a common color). How many miles on yours?

 

If your going to have a body shop do all that cost will go up quite a bit.
Hell if your going that route it might be cheaper to have them put a new bedside on.

 

I wish I had the space to do it myself, my house doesn’t have a garage or anything covered to do it. It has 227000 but feels brand new. I bought it with 165000 back in 2015

 

I don't think it would be a bad driveway repair if you had a couple people to help. Like I said, that bed is literally about six bolts. I'm planning on taking mine off and fabricating a flatbed in my driveway once the weather is warmer. Nothing back there that really even needs a covered place to work. Mine has 100K more miles on it than yours, and also runs like a top.

 

I rebuilt mine with 197k on it. Did the bed myself after they straightened the frame. Did it outside with 6 friends.

 

Copy that, my drive way is on the side of a mountain with no real flat areas or anything but I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks for all the help, this has really made me feel better about the whole situation.

 

#metoo. All I've got is a patch of dirt next to my shop (that you can't drive in) This was where I did an engine swap on my mothers subaru this summer

 

Anyway, I can't promise anything, but if you decide to work on it yourself there is a high likely hood that I could spare an evening or two to help you out since its so close and I'm in Missoula all the time. For right now I'd just get a slide hammer from Harbor freight and pull that rear quarter panel out enough to get the tail light more or less straight and just drive the sucker while you figure out where to get a bed etc. I don't have to tell you, there are rigs in worse shape driving in Missoula everyday.

To me if it is a Truck that you have had for some time and know how it has been cared for and it still drives good and runs well I would fix it back up and keep it going!

 

I will be shocked if it's not totaled...but that is not necessarily a bad thing...actually it might be good. If they total it it could work out like this...obviously I'm guessing at some of these #s.

Deductable $1k
Inurance buy back $1K
Repair $1-2K

Insurance pays out $5K - $1K (Deductable) - $1K Buyback = Truck + $3K in your pocket for a $1k-2K repair.

Do some research and be prepared to negotiate with the insurance company if they try to lowball you...know what your truck is worth.

The downside is it will have a branded title, but for a truck that old you are planning on keeping, as long as it's functionally safe, who cares. Good luck.

 

Of course its totaled, but thats just an insurance company gimmick. In the real world it means nothing. Every vehicle I've ever owned was totaled. My tundra was totaled out a decade ago because of hail if you can believe that lol.
