    I was adopted into a family with German/Ukrainian heritage. My birth family is are the ones dating back to the early 1600s in North America. I'm all kinds of messed up. :D

    My Irish side was from the fraternal side of the my family...my grandpa escaped the potato famine and he met my grandma here who had Brit blood. My Scottish side was quite early here. 1600's too. My dad's lineage is from that. I retract that I personally have no German blood. My dad's mom remarried to a German heritage guy who died before I was born....dang...never met him. All the women in my family live into their mid 90's
    The men....70's....nothing to do with whiskey or scotch, or tobacco.......my mom just turned 95.

    My birthmom's direct ancestors on her father's side came over in the early 1600's Some headed into the US and settled there (rumors of some being pioneers and indian fighters) and others pushed the frontier west in Canada fur trapping for the Hudson Bay Company. The other side ends for the most part at my great grandmother, due to her being an orphan. We do know some members of her family fought in the Boer War, WW1, and WW2. Dunno anything about my birthfather.

    The interesting thing is that during WW2 my adopted grandmother's family were fleeing west from the Ukraine as the Russians pushed through. Her family looked at the Nazi soldiers as saviours from the Russian horde. My grandfather and great-grandfather on my adopted dad's side avoided military duty for the allies as "concientous objectors". Meanwhile, my blood relatives were killing Germans in France under the flag of Britain, Canada and the USA all having volunteered. The dichotomy is fascinating for me. My blood relatives were fur trappers, pioneers, alleged indian fighters and warriors. My adopted family are generally pacifists. No wonder I caused so much shit growing up...
