I'm certainly not a Ford fan, but even I can say you guys are cursed. That is just next level bad luck.

I was rear ended in my ‘19 by an impaired driver who was doing 70mph with in stopped traffic on the interstate. My daughter and I walked away with 0 medical issues. Without thinking twice I bought a
‘20 three weeks later. They are tough trucks that kept my family and I safe.

Was a chevy fanboy for most of my life. Had a 2000 Tahoe with over 268,000 miles when I gave it to the SIL for a back and forth work vehicle. Only thing I really did was a transmission at around 175,000 miles. Was a good vehicle and I maintained it very well. When Looking for a replacement looked at chevy first. Loaded 1500 was way over priced. Neighbor had a 14 tundra I rode in on a trip to the lumber yard. Damm, was at the Toyota dealer the next day. Absolutely NO regrets.

I’m in construction and have had every brand except Nissan. Most were Chevy and Ford. They all have strengths and weaknesses. They all have a feature or two that’s exclusive.

I recently bought my 1st Tundra. One deciding factor was the stop-start and cylinder deactivation that is now standard in the Silverado, F150, and Ram. I’m not a fan.

I’ll take slightly less fuel economy and not have to deal with that crap too.

auto start stop is easily turned off, can be done by default or per drive cycle, not the end of the world.

True. But that doesn’t stop the cylinder deactivation and the transmission shudder like my last Chebbie had.

yes it can, there is a button on the dash that you can push every time you start the truck and it will disable it until you stop next time.
There is also aftermarket support to permanently disable. Of the F-150's that actually have that feature, the guys that drive them that is the first thing they do when they get in the truck.

Single wire to pull near the brake pedal will disable it permanently. No need for the aftermarket thing.

@knoxville36 is there a reason why your company buys so much American 1/2 tons but don't tow?

Why not buy Tundras if all they do is drive them?

They are for a project managers and general superintendents to drive around from job sites. They will throw some marking paint, survey equipment, etc.... in the back of them. They see 30k to 60k miles a year. We have all the utility trucks, dump trucks, etc... to haul all equipment.

Our owner is a big GM fan for the most part. He is also very good friends with the owner of a GMC dealership so we get good deals and it is the good old fashioned buddy system in the business world.

They have never even considered a Toyota. However we bought 2 used Tacoma's from the GMC dealership about 8 months ago and the 2 guys absolutely love them. More might be in line in the future.

The Tundra was my 3rd choice for a truck. First choice was F150 5.0 and then GMC Sierra. But after hearing all the horrors about build quality, design flaws, and corporate's unwillingness to help, I played it safe and bought my Tundra.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's more capable, better fuel economy, and have more creature comforts/gadgets, etc. What's the point of all of that if it doesn't even run?

I was on the fence between a GM and a Tundra. What really pushed me to Toyota, aside from GM's brake failures, was the fact that there's no good buyback legislation in Canada the way there is in the U.S.

I would have preferred to have the higher payload and better fuel economy of the Sierra but not at the risk of numerous repairs or not being able to stop and having little to no recourse with the manufacturer if they can't or won't fix it.

I just don't get it. Why do people continue to buy Ford/Chevy/Dodge if they are that unreliable? What percentage do we think are bad?

Same reason I went to the Tundra - I didn't want to risk the reliability, so I compromised on capability. Turns out I should have just bought a domestic heavy duty.

The issues (more than a couple hours shop time every 6 months/10k kms) within 3 years is most likely 5% or less, over 3 years or 100k kms I think it jumps a lot. Tundra pretty much stay level, adding mileage doesn't change whether you would get an issue - I figure Tundra's are around 2-3% that see significant shop time.

The reason so many still buy them is there a lot of people who trade in within those 3 years, so in reality they're not risking a ton. Never gonna have high mileage issues if the truck doesn't get to high mileage before being traded in.

The only heavy duty that I think would have similar reliability to the Tundra is the GMT-900 (2007-2013) GM 2500 with the 6.0L V8 but I'd have to buy it used from someone who may or may not have maintained it well, it would have similar fuel economy to the Tundra and it wouldn't be as comfortable for daily driving as a half ton would be.

Stole the pic below from earlier in the thread. Granted only one source, but according to this you would be best served by a ford in the HD side of things.

You're probably right but this doesn't appear to include the GM and Ram heavy duties and the GM guys I know (including my dad) would be upset if I bought a Ford.
