Hopefully they offer v8 for few years before complete dump. Does anyone know if there is any audio of the test mule's. Does it sound like a v8?

There's a video on Youtube about someone who heard it - no good audio from what I remember but they said it was distinctly not a V8

I can definitely see a TT V6 with and without hybrid assist (with being an option). My question would be on long towing trips when you run out of juice on the hybrid. What then for torque? Your assist being depleted. Or am I understanding it wrong?

I like my new giant V8 but the gas is giving me gas. (I knew what I was getting into of course) Having a more fuel efficient truck would be good. So long as it gets the job done right. They can "tune" the exhaust so it doesn't sound like a go-cart so a V6 shouldn't be horrible. I just wasn't going to wait for the new truck to mature enough to trust. I bought into the old tech.

you sure they could do that. Didn’t Ford try? I think the new Raptor sounds horrible. I would rather have a quiet exhaust that listen to the garbage that the Raptor puts out

Most manufacturers spend huge money "tuning" sounds. everything from exhaust notes to the 'clink' when you shut the doors. Of course, the more money the vehicle, the more effort on that sort of thing. But even less expensive cars have work done on sounds.

Toyota hasn't started putting turbos in any other vehicles. I don't think they'll start with their largest engine. The Camry is a great example, Honda went with a 2.0 turbo in their Accord and Toyota went with their 3.5 v6. Honda offered no improvements that were worth designing a new expensive drivetrain. Even the mpg's are the same. Toyota sees this.

Ford went to the extreme and had v8 notes played through the speakers. Don't think anyone liked that

I looked at a 2020 Tacoma TRD PRO sitting in my dealers showroom while my Unicorn was getting an oil & filter change this morning, it was a white 4wd with a V6 engine that I had never seen before. 278 horsepower and 265 lb ft of torque with a peak EPA claimed fuel economy of 23 MPG.

    2020-Toyota-Tacoma-TRD-Engine-Specs.jpg

The truck was dolled up with all sorts of accessories, and the sticker was close to $53k... this makes me think that the price of the real 3rd generation Tundra will be astronomical when it debuts in '21 or '22, especially if it has a fancy power plant.

After the BRZ and the Supra-Z4, those in the know are aware that Toyota doesnt have time to build new motors, so they're outsourcing to Ford and sitting in a board room to think up a new name for the ecotec.

This has me tempted as well the Ram Rebel TRX will have a Hellcat engine in it slated for around the time the next gen Tundra comes out. Yes the Hellcat motor in the TRX and the TRX itself has been confirmed. EDIT: There is also an extremely high chance right now that the hellcat Ram motor will make it to most of the other trims.

That's the same V6 they've been running in the Taco since 2016. It's probably a quality motor, but it produces almost no torque until you spin it up to about 4700 RPM's. I had that truck for 2 years and grew to utterly loathe this engine. Other's experiences may differ.

I'd like to see the 5.7 continue. Perhaps with the Atkinson/Otto port and direct injection treatment the tacoma got. If also like to the see the body styling to more closely match the Tacoma which IMO is the best looking pickup of any size available right now.

Isn't this what most Tacoma owners complain about? Something about it feeling powerless and always hunting for the right gear.

They need to significantly increase the pathetic payload rating before any increase in the tow rating means squat imo. My payload is maxed out with my 6k lb trailer.

Turbo the Fing V8 for Gods sake.
PLEASE do not leave a TT V6 as the only option. (Pretty sure SVT learned this right?)
I really don’t want to have to buy a 2020 and drive it for the rest of my life. :(

One of the best parts of my driving experience is making sure the DirtyDeeds is singing at 2800-3400 RPM while passing a V6 Raptor.

With all respect to "those in the know", Mike Sweers has been pretty clear that the Tundra will first be about towing, that is how they built their market and that is where they will continue to focus. He has also been clear that while you can get increased power number out of a Turbo V6 it is not ideal for towing, but they need better emission offerings. I think their will definitely be V6 3.nothing engine offered for all the Raptor wannabees out there that want their trucks to look cool in the parking lot get good gas mileage, etc., and that is fine. No judgement here. I like the cool look too.

But a V6 is not for those of us that value function over form, and Sweers has been very clear that he values displacement for towing. Let us also remember whatever engine changes they make are going to the Land Cruiser, Sequoia and the Lexus LX also. Just don't see them dumping large displacement engines in all these vehicles. Talk about cutting off your nose just to spite your face. Furthermore if RAM can make a a hybrid 5.7 with 8 gears that gets MPGs into the mid 20s, you can't tell me Toyota, the Godfather of hybrids, can't do it better.

Again from a press release this summer, Aisan is building a new plant right next door "to make new hybrid transmissions for the Tundra in the future". I see a return to two engine offerings: Turbo V6 for those wanting a Tundra as the family hauler and Hybrid V8 for those wanting to tow their travel trailer, boat, etc.

So until Mike Sweers says it is going away....

Sorry bud, the 5.7 is no more. We can hope it isn’t the case, but for at least the 2022 model year there will be none. It’s V6 or bust come 2022 model year. Mike Sweers may be the face, but just because he didn’t say it yet doesn’t mean the decisions have not already been made.

And the hybrid is going to be a TT V6....not the V8

You could be right. If you are, I'll give you an "attaboy".

As I have no "insider", I'll go with Sweers. But Mike Sweers is not "the face" of the brand. He is the chief engineer who makes the final decision on what the vehicle will be when it hits the market. Based on that, I'll go with his statements over all others. To quote Mike Sweers from a few months ago, " We are not trying to be #1, or even #2 in the market (1/2 ton), but we have built a niche in towing. More and more customers are wanting tow large Travel Trailers, etc. We do have to come up with vehicles with improved emissions, and we are having those tough talks on how we do that right now, and big V8s are bad when it comes to that(emissions). While Turbo charged V6's produce reduced emissions and have allowed for increased power numbers, they are not ideal for towing. As we say, when it comes to towing, there is no replacement for displacement."

Our speculation won't change anything, he is the one making the decision. Sounds to me like he plans on doing both.
