Oh I get it, this is why Ford has a 2.nothing in its full size truck. Ford sells very few fuel efficient passenger cars in comparison to the enourmous number of 1/2 tons that they constantly brag about. Kind of like McD's billions and billions sold, but nobody is confusing it with a quality burger.

So while this premise is correct, it is incomplete. CAFE stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards and these standards for light trucks (includes half tons) are pooled with passenger cars. Toyota sells many more highly efficient Corollas, Camrys and Priuses than they do trucks. The technical term is "s***-ton" more. This allows them to produce the awesome gas guzzling powertrain with a 5.7 liter V8 and 4.3 rear axle that I currently drive.

There is definitely a demand for better fuel economy and those that want a Toyota "updated" powetrain. For me "updated" means compromised. But Toyota understands their market, so it will be surprising if they completely go away from the V8. If they were to do that, it would probably be more feasible to just shut the model down and build the midsize Tacoma only. They will build the compromised V6 turbo Tundra for certain, but I'll bet continue with a V8. It is not like they would be the only manufacturer to keep offering an updated V8 with an 8 or 10 speed transmission.

It’s all good. Just stating facts. I bought the 2020 for the sole purpose that the 5.7 was going away. It sucks but it’s happening. While I’m not sold yet on the twin turbo hybrid V6, everyone at Toyota is, which is why they are switching. Call me a troll, etc but I have watched the years go by on these forums with the constant hypothesizing of “what’s coming next”. Every single time I bite my tongue and laugh when what I knew years previously is what actually came to fruition vs all of the “experts” online. I don’t reveal my sources, but I put my 2 cents in to confirm the OP’s comments. He is correct and so are his sources.

Dunno. Only thing I can say is that people are expecting a new model for the 2021 model year. I don't see it. There's lot of shit that's going to need to do to bring it on line. We are only out 9 months and the upgrades are just now pregnant. Aluminum panels require more heat to come to cure temperature for paint for instance. This is the 1st major retooling for the plant. It came on line making new Gen2s

Also, let's think like this. Toyota is not going to kill their current sales if the public thinks it's time to wait for the new model. This plant has to profit. Rumor killing the V8 and make a $60K TRD supercharged Pro. Toyota wants to compete in the higher end markets like a Raptor or something. That is their strategy.

New model will not happen in 2021. This is also a fact.

That was my thinking, my 18 sits in the garage mainly and I drive a old single cab taco daily. My tundra is 2 years old and I just rolled 10k.

Pretty much the reason I started the thread. That's what I'm wondering. Mine is my personal car that I don't have to drive for business. But she's got 82K on her that I bought used. However, I'm not paying a note to a bank.

I predict they will be built in 2021 for the 2022 model year. Model year starts in Sept

You are correct. The 2022 model year, built in Sept 2021 will be the Next Generation model. It will not be offered in the 5.7.

I’ve been to my dealership a couple times in the last few weeks (buying wife’s Camery, oil change, looking gettin at 2020 Tundra) multiple people at the dealership said the 5.7 isn’t leaving. The would mention an Eco mode and 8 speed.

Be careful what you believe from a dealer. They truly know nothing until they see the new vehicles allocated. They don’t work for Toyota, rather work for a 3rd party who has a license to sell Toyota vehicles.

Because of this timeline I think it will be February 2020 - yes another whole year - before they introduce it at Chicago. Every 'insider' info I've seen combined with the rough stage the test mules are at - 2.5 Gen body with new engine/suspension, no full new body style and mechanical components - points to the truck not being ready for unveiling in 2 months. I'd love to be wrong but reading the tea leaves puts it at late 2021 in the showroom.

As for the TT v8 - Don't see it when the new gen is released, but if it works like they expect in the Lexus and they don't like the trade in history of V8 Tundras to the TT V6's I could see in 2024 or 2025 getting the V8 TT if there's not much redesign needed to squeeze it in.

If Toyota drops the biggest V8 from their biggest truck line, it's a clear sign that they are returning to their roots - reliable transportation that excites no one.

It's fun to think about. I think they will make a reboot SC V8 for the TRD Pro. Pull out your wallet. You have to bet that they are wanting to sell trucks and are looking at the big 3 model of turning to shit in a few years. The V8 is a generational thing. Most people don't know how to change the oil that buy automobiles or even change a tire.

Yeah this is floating around too and I have seen this source popping up as a Next Gen engine. Now the rumor about a Naturally Aspirated V8 being gone could very well be true but a Forced Induction V8 on the other hand...

NAIA show in Detroit is moving to June 2020 instead of January. And, they have plans to include outside demos. If there is something big, a company is really proud of, that will be the show to target - just a few months before new models come out to really generate excitement. Definitely like Chicago better than Detroit, but Comerica Park, Cobo Hall, Joe Louis Fist, Windsor night clubs, casinos, and the NAIA show, can't beat it.

I think it would be a clear sign that they are about to give up the 1/2 ton platform completely.

The Tacoma and Tundra are going to be sharing a frame on the next platform so it would make sense to dump the v8 as I would bet that the Tacoma won’t be getting one

No frame sharing. They will share some things, small things. The Tundra IS NOT getting smaller and the Tacoma IS NOT getting bigger.

Toyota has been using Chicago for their big releases in the US so don't see that being affected by NAIA moving, curious how moving NAIA moving would affect the domestics though as that's been their go to for introductions with models hitting the showroom in June-ish. I've liked the current timeline as the Edmonton Auto Show is in April so we get all the new stuff that had just been released in January and February.

Toyota could drop the 5.7L V8, but keep the 4.6L V8....Then have their new TT/hybrid as the optional upgrade. Just spitballing...

Same Platform does not mean same frame especially since numerous sources have said the Next Gen Tundra is pushing into the 15k-18k tow capacity range. Ford is at 13k so that would make sense. Here are the things that pop up the most Twin Turbo, Hybrid engine, up to 30 mpg and the tow ratings mentioned above. These are from sources that have been right before however the addition of the twin turbo being a V6 is uncertain and is assumed by Journalists because of what Ford has. The Twin Turbo V8 is announced from Lexus which has opened theories for me on the next gen Tundra however, keep in mind everything is speculation and while these sources have a high chance of being correct they are not official. I can say one thing though 15-18k tow rating is in 3/4 ton range and I have some personal theories about a twin turbo V8 in what could possibly be a 3/4 ton entry for them however I am not an official source and the 3/4 ton theory is just mine alone and a theory even I doubt will happen. The Twin Turbo V8 however shows promise and I hope is true.

The Titan and frontier were on the same platform as well. They are modular to amortize costs.
