4th Gen Tundra Hmm Hmm

Heard from a source at the plant today who spent a year in Japan and spoke with confidence that the V-8 is going away. I just wonder what that's going to do to the value of the 5.7 market. I wish I had the money to get a new one like a 1794 before the new model as I think the 5.7 will be in demand in the used market and drive the prices up. Japan is really hooked on pushing technology gadgets, increasing towing and payload using a hybrid drive system, and offering a high $$ truck that stickers for $60K +. 2 V-6 options. Turbo and hybrid.

I feared this and bought my 2020 in November. I don't want a turbo or hybrid. Want to sit it out until they sort EV trucks. No thanks...

This is true. Just heard that today.

 

Lexus does have plans to use Turbo V8, but doesn't seem like that could make any sense in a pickup. It makes sense for Ram to do a Hellcat because they sell enough trucks and enough big engines to appeal to that niche market that wants to pay $70-80k, for big poor handling "sports truck". Toyota doesn't sell enough trucks to go niche. That is why they have a limited number of trims and packages.

With all do respect to the OP's friend who is probably right, the logical conclusion based on how Toyota has mirrored the powerplants of Ford and Ram in the past is that there will definitely be a V6 turbo, they already have been using it in the Lexus LS500. But, I would bet the 5.7 doesn't go away completely. It likely will get a new transmission with 8 gears and be some sort of 'bastard' hybrid similar to the RAM. That way they can change the axle ratio in the new model to about 3.5 from from the current 4.3, still get low end torque for take off but drastically improve MPG.

I wouldn't even be surprised to see them dump the 5.7 for one year, then bring it back as hybrid. I call it the "New Coke" marketing plan. Toyota did it with the Tundra TRD PRO, dumping it for '18, then bringing it back at almost 10% markup in '19 and have such great popularity that dealers are selling them over invoice.

I'm probably way off. The only thing we know for certain is that the Aisan is building a plant down the road in San Antonio to make 'future hybrid transmissions for the tundra". Maybe they switch all V6 for one year, and the next year the 5.7 comes back as a hybrid. Imagine the hype. They won't keep any in stock.

 

I bet they will keep a V8 as an option.

 

If, they did a twin turbo v8 in the tundra, my God how big would the price tag be?

 

I hate to burst the bubble for us V8 die hards, but as the OP said, the 5.7 is toast. The 2021 model will be the last year it is offered. It is a fact they are moving to the V6 platform in the Tacoma’s that are already engineered and set up for turbos.
The hybrid theory is also a reality.

 

No one knows. Lexus is building this V8 Twin Turbo for their vehicles. So the V8 is not going anywhere.

 

Since we're at it, I want a Tundra diesel.

Roger that. I’ll believe facts straight from the horses mouth (Toyota engineers) that I have spoken to over the last few years.

 

I'd be shocked if they did away with the V8 option entirely for the Tundra. It sounds like all they're going to do is turbo charge that miserable 3.5 V6 sedan engine that they decided was a good fit for the Tacoma (it isn't) and there are those of out there who want nothing to do with that. I have to think Toyota knows this.

 

It’s all about the EPA. Us consumers don’t mean squat when it comes to government policy.

 

Stuff like this really makes me glad I have already procured one I like. May have to keep it a good long while and that is fine. It should last!

 

If Toyota does away with the V8, they may as well reintroduce the T100.

Passenger Car and Light Truck Standards for 2017 and beyond

In 2012, NHTSA established final passenger car and light truck CAFE standards for model years 2017-2021, which the agency projects will require in model year 2021, on average, a combined fleet-wide fuel economy of 40.3-41.0 mpg. As part of the same rulemaking action, EPA issued GHG standards, which are harmonized with NHTSA’s fuel economy standards that are projected to require 163 grams/mile of carbon dioxide (CO2) in model year 2025. EPA will reexamine the GHG standards for model years 2022-2025 and NHTSA will set new CAFE standards for those model years in the next couple of years, based on the best available information at that time.
